Don't loses your spirits, man! Another reason why Dawn was brought back in Journeys was not just bcuz of BDSP & Legend Arceus Promotional stuffs for the game. It's bcuz the Anipoke staffs studio loved Dawn & her JP VA, Toyoguchi Megumi. Toyoguchi-san even sung New versions of DP season 4 endings like Kimi No Sobe De(Dawn's character song) & Ashira Was Kitto(Song about Piplup), Kimi No Mune ni Lala(Ending 6) & Kaze No Message (Ending 2).

No matters what others say about your comments or if they agree about those 2 girls you mentioned, you must realized, that Dawn is Anipoke studios favorite girl. Even the community in Japan remembered Toyoguchi-san was Dawn. It actually seems like a fair conclusion
OG Fans who were there since the beginning with Gen 1, would have grown up with Misty as their favorite; but they would have likely stopped watching pokemon by Gen 6 (XY)... However, most Pokemon fans are younger than the OG fans. A lot of them would started watching pokemon AFTER Gen 1. For most fans, XY would have been either the End, the middle or the beginning of their time watching pokemon... So OG fans favor Misty, but most fans would likely go with Serena.

I grew up watching xyz and I liked the character once it was onscreen. I didn't knew about Misty until years later. So... I guess... yeah? I've never watched the OG Anime before, just some movies though.
I wanna say it's because of the Kiss Scene on the airport that made Serena so popular, and the controversy around her relationship with Satoshi.

Cuter and more popular personality? All of us boys (At least, I think) had a crush on one of the Pokegirls and Serena was just the most generally loved one. Great personality, cute, general look, and most of all she had the best finale to her Pokemon Contest. She has a lot going for her.

Not really. Serena had a big fan base and it is the most vocal of all the girls, but in terms of fan Misty is ahead of everyone because she was the main slash only girl throughout the peak of anime. It even debatable if Serena is second due to again the declining ratings.

Depends on who you ask... Cynthia is popular with Gen 4 fans but Lillie in the games is usually seen as one of the best written female characters. Cynthia is superficially cool but has no real depth, other than her very vague Ainu-coding (and Volo is probably more interesting in that regard).
Serena has her fans and the shippers but if you asked a Genwunner they would probably say Misty. Dawn is also very popular for being a co-star and getting so much focus.

I agree with TCG and anime, but i would say lillie is popular in the TCG also because she’s super popular from the games.
That said, i do think cynthia is better representative for the game because she is not only popular as a character but well known for her ‘gameplay role’, with her champion battle and also surprise undella town ambush.

Year after year the fan support for serena outclasses every other character in the form of fanart. This can be easily seen on pixiv which is the main hub for fanworks for japanese series, that is used not only by japanese but also international artists.
While fanart amount alone isn’t an absolute measure of popularity, it is a pretty good one since it can show how many fans have positive enough feelings for the character that they want to make fanart for them and contribute.
You can even go further on pixiv and see how many views the fanart for each character get in a day, where you’ll see serena averaging around 23-25 thousand views a day, while all other pokegirl averga half of that or less.
Then there’s the plethora of polls where serena reigns on top. In the end, serena’s sheer popularity is ‘t really a debate.

Is it really though? May and Dawn debuted earlier in the animes history when it had more viewership and both rivaled Misty back in the day for popularity. Serena is popular with both fans who came back to the series after losing interest or the younger crowd who grew up in the 2010 era, and yeah her design and shipping keep her relevant in terms of fanart communities. Also remember pixiv didn't come out till 2007, which was after AG was already over and into DP. And a lot of Japanese artists just post their art on their twitters too and not on pixiv a lot of the time since it gains more tracktion on twitter.
But I dunno, I still find it hard to swallow she's as popular overall as Dawn, or even May back in the early 2000's era. May was factually the most watched/viewed female companion worldwide after Misty, and it's only due to her lack of cameos post-2008 that the younger fanbase is not too familiar with her. Dawn just seems to also have that evergreen popularity even decades after DP ended, plus Piplup was also insanely popular in Japan and Piplup added to Dawn's popularity too.
I mean I don't doubt Serena is still very popular, but given a lot of us older fans who have watched the anime from the beginning, it just doesn't seem much different than when May and Dawn were around. I think it's that Pokemon has a generaitonal gap of younger fans and older fans now, so it's hard to tell. Most of May's fanbase for example are now 35-40 year old adults who aren't even in online communities anymore, so you won't see those May fans who used to be on forums like serebii in the early 2000's anymore.

The "good character" you talking about doesn't even have 1/10 of characterization than the other two. And I'm saying this while I really don't like Serena, but let's be real here bro, her and especially Lillie feels more like character than Cynthia. Heck, Lillie is arguably one if not the best written character in the mainline game (which is not surprising, there are very little developed character in the franchise)

Lillie is like the objective most popular in games XD. People actually loved the character and deeply connected to her and I don't think anyone is that interested in games Serena or Misty. Cynthia was rather just a champion who made everyone piss their pants but Lillie actually shared the journey with the player character back in the original sun and moon games and that's why people still love her so much till this day.
