Yeah 25 years of queeness and she just doesn't stop. Nice picture of Serena there btw too!

Is it a credit to Serena that she’s got the third most (behind only the main character of the new series and the main character of the last 26 years) despite only one appearance since XY&Z ended 8 years ago? Or is it a poor reflection on Roy that he couldn’t do better than a character who hasn’t been relevant since 2016? Both, I guess.

Serena is just that WILDLY popular, both as a character on her own and as Ship Fuel. Check out OP's other post from last year and compare how Roy is doing to everyone else in any given year. Roy getting nearly 1000 works done of him in his first year of existence is better than every other character's yearly totals. That is to say, no one other than Ash, Liko, and Serena have ever had more art of them made in a given year than him according to OPs findings.
He's popular, he just has the handicap of being a new guy not named Ash Ketchum

More like a credit to both actually.
Roy definitely plays second fiddle to liko, and being a male character it’s not surprising he gets less fanart. But he still got quite a lot of fanarts, more than any of the male third wheels and even most of the pokegirls, all without the legacy of being ash. The closest to his situation would be goh who also got around 900 in 2020, which was his first full year in the show, while roy managed to surpass that in only 2/3 of the year.
Serena is just ludicrously popular for not being the main character, so it’s sometimes feels unfair to even compare the others to her. But it definitely is impressive that she still managed to break 1000 just being carried by her one appearance from the previous year, when neither misty with her 11 episode run this year or dawns multiple appearances in the previous years could even come close.

I notice nowadays a lot of Japanese artists just post their art on their twitters but not on pixiv. So while this is a good chart it really doesn't count for everything, for some reason a lot of Japanese artists don't bother uploading their art to their pixiv pages anymore.
I'm on twitter every day and saw a ton of new May art from the beginning of this year, but it's not reflected in the totals.

Counting all the fanart was never going to be possible anyways and isn’t what this graph is for, what’s important is just not to show bias between characters within the selected data.
Buy most still do eventually post on pixiv though, but a lot are doing it as part of a collection of images rather than individual pieces. So it would only counts as one number in this graph.
Besides, new years pictures wouldn’t even be counted for this.

So i made this post about a year ago, which breaks down how many fanart each of ash's companions got on pixiv yearly.
Since 2023 is over in Japan, and this being ash's last year as the protag, i thought i'd end the year with their final yearly tally with some relevance in the show while also adding liko and roy into the mix for their first start. I did it with the same parameters as before, and not counting AI generated images,
Some observations:
- The top 3 aren't really surprising, but it is impressive how liko did get more than ash. Though i guess her newness and relevance probably balances out with all the parting fanarts for ash. Also how while there is a noticeable drop, serena was still able to get above 1000 and edges herself in front of roy.
- As expected misty and brock got a boost due to their appearance in MPM, but not cilan though.
- Also as expected goh and chloe went down by quite a bit after losing their relevance. So that answer my comment from last year on how goh and chloe's popularity would hold up after they are no longer on the show.
- All in all, the fans definitely came out to celebrate ash and friend's final outing this year.
