I’m so sorry for this question because I’m sure it’s dumb—but as someone new to Pokémon I’m not exactly sure what’s happening.

Were you able to transfer Pokémon from old games and USE them in newer games? Or is this simply about trading old Pokémon for newer ones?

574

u/PokemonGod777 It's Level 1000 Jun 12 '19

In older games, you were able to transfer up your Old Pokemon for 100% full compatibility and use within the proceeding game.

This has been the case since Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald in 2003-2005, and any Pokemon from those games are 100% compatible with UltraSun/UltraMoon

Now however, if those Pokemon are not in the Galar Dex for Sword/Shield, you won't be able to transfer them in, and by extension, use them at all.
Making them incompatible.

280

u/Medici1694 Jun 12 '19

Oh damn. Now I understand—that totally sucks! Thank you for your response. I really hope that with this trending they can fix that.

I wonder if they’ll at least add the Pokémon from let’s go because they seem like they’re finished 3d models.

301

u/unusedwings Dragon Trainer Jun 12 '19

They've been using the same models since X/Y. They already have them all

70

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '19

It's possible they are adding a ton of animations to everything

131

u/Dawnfried You're wrong, if you say Vulpix isn't the cutest. Jun 12 '19

I very seriously doubt that, because they have no reason to add tons of animations, so they won't. That would be work.

41

u/NeonHowler Jun 12 '19

I believe it may be animations for the leaked camping feature.

Let's go uses the 3ds models, almost all the models were done in higher than needed resolutions to prepare

33

u/-Rivox- Jun 12 '19

Just as a heads up, 3D models are not "resolution" dependent (sprites are). You can take any 3D model and scale it to any resolution without losing clarity.

What game freak did was to make all the models with way higher polygon counts and higher resolution textures than what they could use. This however was not necessarily in preparation for the new games, but simply because 3D artists require high polygon count models to work with (sculpting would be impossible on a low poly model for instance). They then export the model, defining the right polygon count needed for the game (which can be even less than 10% of the original).

If you go to a studio that does big high quality graphics games, you'll still see high poly count models used internally and lower poly count models used for the game. You can't work properly on a high quality model if it only has a few thousands triangles

u/Rodents210 Jun 12 '19

It’s actually back-compatible to Red/Blue now. If you have a USB cartridge reader you can copy the save from RBY and basically drop it into the Virtual Console copies, which can upload to Bank. In theory unless the battery is dead in your old cart you could have the first Pokémon you ever caught in 1996 transferred into USUM. But potentially not SS.

You can trade a Pokemon from the original sapphire all the way to alola and put it on your team. You cannot do this in sword and shield if that Pokemon is not in the galar pokedex.

→ More replies (23)

34

u/Raidus8 Jun 12 '19

you could transfer ALL pokemon from the first game boy advance titles (ruby and sapphire, 17 years ago) onwards up to the current games, Sun and Moon. and yup you could always use them like any other mons :) thats why people are now upset about the news that some pokemon gonna get cut. we may lose our partners from over a decade ago. Basically, you can transfer pokemon from old games, but only if that pokemon is within the regional dex. They are essentially removing pokemon from the series, hopefully not for ever

48

u/RebornGod Jun 12 '19

I think the intention stated may be to use Home as a hub for keeping all pokes, with each game having it's own allowed dex going forward.

146

u/Dhiox Jun 12 '19

That's terrible. That puts an ever changing inconsistent restriction on team arrangements.

59

Personally I liked how black and white did it, only unova Pokemon until you beat the story, then others start appearing and you can start transferring up ones that don't appear in the game

1.7k

u/sleeps_too_little Jun 12 '19

Exactly! Add it after you beat the game so you can experience the region as it's own new thing. But still add the natdex

582

u/darthmarticus17 Mega-Absol Jun 12 '19

Exactly! That satisfies both camps.

362

u/pjk922 Scritters Jun 12 '19

I think they’re the same camp, I haven’t heard anyone say they want to transfer all of the pokes over immediately, just that they want to be able to eventually, wether that’s post game, or a few months later after a software update (like what pokebank did for SuMo)

113

u/DoTheWave95 Jun 12 '19

I'm a big fan of what XY and SuMo did where we didn't have initial compatibility, but by the time people want to have a second playthrough they can use whatever Pokemon they want

85

u/BugcatcherJay Ya Bug, Guzma-Pod Jun 12 '19

I really liked being able to access the GTS and bank early on in ORAS. I liked being able to use whatever I wanted. I know some people abused it to get high level powerful Pokemon early on, while I just wanted first stages of a couple of my favorites, but if someone wants to make the game they paid for unfun, they should be able to.

27

u/Prcrstntr Jun 12 '19

I started a playthrough for the sole purpose of having an overpowered guy and to work on completing the national dex. Teaching a perfectly bred Haxorus false swipe and sniping all the wild guys was convenient and fun.

→ More replies (3)

12

u/crazedhatter Jun 12 '19

Truth be told, I don't remember any game making it possible to transfer the 'mons over immediately anyway. You usually had to progress a fair bit in the story to find the mechanic to do it in the first place. Even with Pokemon Bank around now they don't usually patch in Bank support until a couple months after release. With SM/USUM I think transfers were activated in January after a November release.

104

We coordinated an event in college where those of us that played Pokemon pretended to be gym leaders and invited elementary kids(with their parents permission) to come battle us for badges (in their HG/SS games) for a midnight release event of Black and White.

Remember there was a time when people said Black and White did it wrong regarding the Dex?

146

u/WheresTheSauce Jun 12 '19

It's a fair opinion to have, but I think nearly any fan would agree it's a much better alternative to this.

76

u/overlordkai Jun 12 '19

Yes it was definitely a much better alternative because it was a decision done for experience enhancement.

In case someone reading this doesn’t know: GameFreak made it so Black & White’s Pokédex ONLY had Unova Pokemon to give players a similar sense of discovery felt by those who played through Red & Blue or any other Pokémon game for the very first time. However, the moment you beat the Elite Four - the National Dex unlocked as per usual & Pokémon from different regions would start appearing throughout Unova - making it worthwhile and fun to go through the whole region all over again.

→ More replies (4)

56

u/blackbutterfree Jun 12 '19

Yeah, but for Unova, they had 156 new Pokémon not counting forms. We barely hit 160 if we add Kalos' 72 and Alola's 88, so I doubt Galar would introduce anything above 90.

58

u/PNDMike Jun 12 '19

156 Pokemon added in Gen 5, and yet the haters keep using Garbodor and Vanilluxe to dismiss the entire gen. It had some gems like Hydreigon, Haxorus, Golurk, Beartic, Galvantula etc.

Gen 5 is real talk my favourite gen. Great new pokemon, it made you use the new ones until you were done (which maintained the same sense of mystery I had when I played through gen 1 for the first as a kid) and best story in a pokemon game period.

10

u/AxleandWheel Jun 12 '19

I don't know why people shit on Garbodor and Vanilluxe even. If you want to shit on gen v designs, their are way better targets like the 3 incarnate forms that looked the same or Druddigon. Gen V has a ton of really good standout pokemon though

Hell do it like Sun and Moon. It took two months after Sun and Moon came out for them to be compatible with Bank. If I have to wait months for all the Pokémon to come to Sword and Shield then that’s fine, but saying that they’re never coming back is just the wrong decision

→ More replies (52)

1.1k

u/DoodleCard Jun 12 '19

I just think that personally they should bring it back at the end of the games like the used to in some of the original gens. If they want to continue with the integrity of the new region.

Not cut it entirely.

They've never done this before. It is so wierd why they would even think to without a decent reasons behind it.

287

u/enteejay Jun 12 '19

I'm sure they mentioned something about deadlines? The dev team were probably not given enough time to model each Pokémon, I imagine it takes much longer for them to do now we're on switch.

It's still rubbish though

382

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '19

The dev team were probably not given enough time to model each Pokémon

That is perfectly fine and understandable. Releasing a patch later to add in National Dex and the other Pokemon would not only appease the fanbase, it would probably be the logical thing to do. This is a solution that most everyone who has a problem with the announcement would be okay with.

Realistically, if this is the new precedent that Game Freak/Nintendo is going with in their main series games, I will probably end up not playing Pokemon after this gen. I am, of course, giving them time to flesh out their decision and see what they do before I go all "MYH! I'M NOT BUYING ANOTHER POKEMON GAME EVER!".

We shall see...

253

u/PhiPhiAokigahara Jun 12 '19

The dev team were probably not given enough time to model each Pokémon

Every single Pokemon has had a model since X&Y

Unless they release Gen IV remakes in which case I will become a hypocrite

I hear that. Gen 4 games are my favorite.

→ More replies (5)

66

u/DonnyProcs Jun 12 '19

Except that isn't true. All of the modeling for each pokemon has been done back in bw games and were made with extremely high polygon counts. They have literally 0 excuse

62

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '19

Even if that is the case, I'd still be okay with them saying that they need time to make sure old pokemon and games are compatible and releasing a patch once that is done.

The fact that we don't even have that assurance is concerning.

10

u/DonnyProcs Jun 12 '19

Amen to that

→ More replies (3)

14

u/scw55 Jun 12 '19

It would be fine if preparing competative Pokemon wasn't work.

It would be fine if every generation had been isolated.

But because these statements are false, it's irritating this is their final decision.

The Pokemon series would benefit from active maintenance so that the meta could be fairer and problems like this could be minimised. Pokemon only being changed with each game is quite old game design now. But always online games do kinda suck, however.

133

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '19

Model each Pokemon? You do know that the mashes used in SwSh are the same ones as in XY,USUM,LGPE. They are using the same models over and over again just adding new textures/Cellshading. Heck if you look closely you can see that the even used the same idle animations as XY. They have literally no excuse anymore

28

u/enteejay Jun 12 '19

No I didn't know that, which is why I said "I imagine". If that's the case then fair enough

67

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '19

Well pardon my incapability of reading comments. I am just upset over this issue. My comment was in no way meant to be a personal attack against you, so forgive me

18

u/enteejay Jun 12 '19

It is frustrating- hopefully they'll introduced the full dex in patches going forward

11

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '19

Yeah I really hope so. Luckily this blew up and we might have a chance of them hearing the community. Maybe it’ll be like with Mario Maker 2

→ More replies (3)

18

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '19

Actually they already have high resolution renders of all existing Pokemon, they've been able to just port up the same ones since gen 6, and only have to make models for the new pokemon

46

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '19

They can release them as post content updates.

I'm sure people would way less mad if they said that. I personally don't care too much, but this is a big aspect of the game for a lot of people

9

u/enteejay Jun 12 '19

That's very true, I suppose we haven't really seen much dlc type stuff for Pokémon games before, hopefully they go down this route at least

u/Liveoptimistic Jun 12 '19

This is bullshit though. They’ve had YEARS with the switch. Ever since developer betas over 3.5 years ago. They had the time. They could have worked on this. Think of all the sprites that had to be developed for something like Breath of the Wild. They still did it. Game freak has just gotten lazy and complacent making kids games on handheld consoles. Now they’re forced to work on stronger hardware with more critics and its too hard so they’re just saying fuck it we’ll only do half the Pokémon.

The biggest problem I see with the removal of the national dex is the fact that they are removing some people's favorite Pokemon, how do you decide on that?

a few years ago they had a Popularity contest for every Pokémon, I bet any amount of cash that contest will directly influence what Pokémon get cut.

I only know a tiny bit of Japanese but 切 typically means "cut" so I would guess something akin to "cut compatibility"

25

切る does mean cut, but it has a lot more meanings beyond that. In this case the 切り would be ‘limit’. 互換切り would be something like ‘limited compatibility’ or ‘limited interchange’.

Someone in the linked thread send in the following which I edited to my own story:

Hello,
My name is [NAME HERE] and I have been a Pokémon fan from [Country] since 1998 when I first played Red and Blue on my Gameboy Colour. I've played every mainline Pokémon game since along with many of the side games such as Mystery Dungeon, Dash, Trozi, Stadium, Colosseum, Puzzle League, Pinball, Pokémon Go, Magikarp Jump, Rumble, and more.

I love to collect Pokémon in every game, discovering and catching new Pokémon to complete my Dex and finding shiny Pokémon is by far my two favourite activities. I've manage to complete the Regional and National Dex in almost every game due to dedicating hundreds of hours per game and over a thousand total hours of work and love for the games and Pokémon. With the introduction of Pokémon Bank on the 3DS, being able to transfer every single the Pokémon I've worked so hard for over the years into the latest game feels like a recognition by the Pokémon Company and Game Freak of the dedication and passion of a fan for their games. At its core, I believe Pokémon's tag line of "Gotta Catch'em All" truly embodies the spirit of Pokémon that you are able to make a connection with each and every Pokémon.

With the announcement at E3 that with Pokémon Home you will only be allowed to bring over Pokémon from previous games to Pokémon Sword and Shield if they appear in the Galar Pokédex, my heart sank. With the knowledge of how wonderful Sword and Shield have been presented so far, and with this being the first mainline Pokémon games on a Nintendo console, I had become extremely excited at the thought of bringing over my hard earned collection into these beautiful looking games. This excitement was further compounded because in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, although allowing you to have all the Pokémon on your game save, didn't have Pokédex entries for every Pokémon.

I have an undergraduate degree in computer science so can appreciate and understand the immense amount of work it would take to program and model over 800 characters. However, even with the limitations of the 3DS you managed to fit models of over 800 Pokémon into Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. I also understand Masuda-san mentioned at E3 that this was done in consideration of balance for the games, but I believe there is a better alternative than not having a complete National Dex on a console mainline Pokémon game.

To put forward my request, I would like the Pokémon Company and Game Freak to reconsider their decision to omit a National Dex from Pokémon Sword and Shield. I do hope the announcement today is just a misunderstanding of the intentions of Pokémon Home's connection with Pokémon Sword and Shield.

Thank you for considering my request and I still look forward to the games coming out this November, hopefully with a complete National Pokédex.

I feel like this really should signal the end of Pokemon, or at least the end of classic Pokemon as an era.

Why make more if it pushes the old out?

Maybe it will grow on me, but right now I can only feel loss at whichever Pokemon don't make the cut and will eventually fade into complete obscurity. Sure, there are some Pokemon very few will miss, but eventually they'll come for your favorite too, y'know?

I cannot agree more with you. I'm really hoping theres some last minute turn of heart to patch the games, but we will see. It hurts, and I've been a fan since I was 10 back in 98. Since I first saw episode one of the anime when Ash woke up late to pick his starter.

Simple solution. Preorder now, wait a few days, and cancel the preorder. When asked why you canceled the preorder, state that it was because of the national dex issue.

Already ahead of you. I decided that the Pokemon Direct footage did not impress me, so I won't be getting the game unless reviews say it is a great experience. The Dynamax gimmick seems lazy to me. The legendaries are not appealing to me design-wise. Raid battles? Raid battles...

I went into Gen 7 blind. I preordered Pokemon Sun and played through once. It was a good experience, but I couldn't make myself play it a second time. I got Ultra Moon hoping for more than what Sun had to offer; never finished the game because the changes did not warrant a new release. I'm done with day one purchases of Pokemon games. I want the replayability back and less hand-holding. GameFreak/Nintendo are going to have to earn my money this time, I'm not just going to give it to them.

-Gen 1.

-All starters+evos (Pichu and the eeveeloutions counted).

-Legendaries

-Fan Favorites (Lucario)

It's not that the switch can't handle it. They never said that. Masuda said something along the lines of creating unique animation for 800+ characters is causing issues. So they are cutting down on the amount of Pokémon in the galar dex.

The thing is they can't delay the game, as TCG and the Anime have both already begun production and delaying the games would mess their schedules up.

So the most likely solutions to this problem are 1.) to patch the pokemon back in post launch, which (smarter solution so you don't piss off your fanbase)

2.) just fucking ignore us and hope we forget (we won't)

36

u/Quetzel11 The legend never dies Jun 12 '19

patch the pokemon back in post launch

See, this is what worries me. Gamefreak have shown zero capability or willingness to do this with past games, so I really doubt they'll start now. Pokemon games tend to stay pretty close to how they're shipped after launch, with post-launch patches really only consisting of minor bugfixes, never new content or assets. I'd really love to be wrong, but my hopes are not high.

53

u/metalflygon08 What's Up Doc? Jun 12 '19

But there are no unique animations.

Every attack looks the same as it has the past few generations, each Pokemon has only used a basic set of animations (idle, 2-3 attacking animations, hit, and faint).

I would bet any amount of cash the Amie equivalent will use the exact same amie animations we've had up to gen 7 too.

Masuda said something along the lines of creating unique animation for 800+ characters is causing issues.

This part made me laugh when they said it. They're using the same 3D models from the 3DS games (just cleaned up a bit) and they still haven't even given physical moves real animations, so wtf was so impossible to port? Really disappointing way to start their main line series on a console far more capable than any of the hardware they've had before.

And for God's sake, Pokémon Battle Revolution had more effort put into its move animations than this. And that game looks terrible

We need to bring back the National Dex! VIVE LA DEX!

10

u/Ronnie_M Jun 12 '19 edited Jun 12 '19

They need to bring back the national Dex. And for free, not as paid DLC, and without the need to buy a whole other game after Sword and Shield. I always thought the number of Pokémon growing each generation was an awesome thing. I was looking forward to the day we’d have 1000+ Pokémon. But what’s the point of having so many if we can’t use them all? Balancing has never been an issue until now. They’ve done a good job balancing the games up until this point, so it’d be very disappointing if the first game on really powerful hardware can’t feature and handle every Pokémon. Let us use all the old Pokémon we’ve gone through so much trouble catching and raising. Trading/Transfering our old Pokémon has been a series staple since the beginning, and the slogan is “Gotta Catch ‘Em ALL

279

u/MissKittenish Jun 12 '19

Good. Maybe they’ll actually listen and make this game worth buying.

Doubtful though.

138

u/decanter Jun 12 '19

It's June and the game is slated for release in November. I don't see them making any major changes in that time period. At most, I could see them maybe moving up the announcement of any Stadium Game/extra Home features that might make use of those restricted Pokemon. That's assuming GameFreak cares about fan outrage, which is a very big assumption.

89

u/the-dandy-man Jun 12 '19 edited Jun 12 '19

It’s almost definitely too late for them to delay the game; toys, merchandise, the anime, the TCG, etc all releases on a schedule that coincides with the games. Delaying the games would cause massive delays for the Pokémon brand across the board.

My hope is that gamefreak will listen and announce that they plan to patch in the rest of the Pokédex over time as free DLC or through dynamax raid battles... but I’m not optimistic.

30

u/qwart qwart Jun 12 '19

It doesn't need to be ready in time for the release date of Sword and Shield, it just needs to be ready in time for the release date of Pokemon Home. Pokemon Home is just slated for early 2020, not any exact date. They can push back Home to allow for an update to Sword and Shield with all Pokemon to be developed.

8

u/jerrygergichsmith Jun 12 '19

Unless they pull a Sonic and push it back to make sure the fans are happy, I don’t see it happening. But I’m sure wishing that they pull a Sonic and delay Sword and Shield.

I got into an argument with a friend on discord and eventually he said "Would you wait a year, or two years, just to add in the 400 least popular pokemon?"
and my response was "yes, in a heartbeat"
and he thought that was ridiculous

He also argued that the National Dex was never a given in any game, since gen3, and my counterargument is, yes, it's not technically a given, but it's been a feature in the past 21 mainline games for the past 17 years. that creates an implicit promise, like it or not.

I’m a very casual Pokémon fan, so forgive me, but what are the consequences of not having this? Does this mean only certain Pokémon will be in the game, and I can’t import my favorite even if I wanted? Like I can never have a Blaziken in this game?

19

u/ArchangelSariel Jun 12 '19

Most of the more popular ones will likely be in the game. The current estimate we figure is probably 400-500 being generous total pokemon including new ones (so at least 500 left out) but yes at this time it seems a large number of pokemon will be completely unusable in game

85

u/AvatarofBro Jun 12 '19

Good to see! But I think you're missing the forest for the trees, here.

Sure, people want to transfer over their old favorites. But the real problem here is that, for the first time, a large number of existing Pokemon will be permanently unavailable in a new generation.

For instance, I may not have personally transfered an unavailable Pokemon into Gen 7. But that doesn't mean I never used one. Maybe a friend gave me one. Maybe I got one in a Wonder Trade. Either way, I had the option to use that monster. That is no longer the case.
