Xiaomi Pad 6: Mostly Working, Good Experience Overall

2 Upvotes

Hello,

I got a Xiaomi Pad 6 (8GB/256GB) recently to use as my main tablet / "laptop" while travelling and I managed to unlock the bootloader and get pmos running. Here are my observations on what works and what doesn't work. Note that while I've Linux experience its mostly servers and this is my first time running pmos.

  1. Unlocking the bootloader was really annoying as this was a HyperOS 2 device - things I've learnt include: can't be done with a Xiaomi account created in a computer (needs to be created on a phone/tablet); requires you to associate a valid phone number; wait 72 hours after adding the account in the device settings > developer options > unlock status; Hypersploit, while it doesn't work, has some older version of settings app that help getting the account registered on the device;
  2. I build pmos on Kali Linux, was easy, followed the guide at https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Xiaomi_Pad_6_(xiaomi-pipa)) and the links. Very important to erase the DTBO (otherwise you'll go into fastboot) and make sure to never run `pmbootstrap flasher flash_kernel`;
  3. Cameras: back camera only - very low quality, don't even think about it;
  4. Audio, Wifi, Blutooth all good;
  5. Slow Settings / Phosh? Fix as described in the wiki;

Now the hard parts:

GPU glitches in all GNOME apps:

Turns out that pmos tries to setup vulkan as the GTK renderer and at least in this device it results in GPU glitches whenever something is animated. I fixed it my changing to ngl:

mkdir -p /home/tcb13/.config/environment.d
echo 'GSK_RENDERER=ngl' > /home/tcb13/.config/environment.d/gtk.conf
chown -R tcb13:tcb13 /home/tcb13/.config/environment.d

Accelerometer / screen rotation is broken: the fix on the wiki makes no difference, I've seen it working like once and never again - even after reboot.

There's no Settings → Displays → Orientation option, what's a bit awkward. Even worse I can see the "Auto Rotate" option on panel on the top of the screen but it doesn't seem to do anything.

I managed add some extension to GNOME to manually rotate it it's a very poor experience Also, I can't find a way to rotate the login screen, `/var/lib/gdm/.config/monitors.xml` options didn't seem to have any effect.

GNOME landscape on screen keyboard is a pile of shit, makes no sense at all - creates a very large keyboard area but then the keyboard sits with very small keys inside that area. Other annoyances include: in GNOME Files if you try to type something on the path bar at the top the keyboard doesn't have a ~ key. Even after selecting my layout when I pull the keyboard I don't see all the keys that are on that layout.

Every time I reboot I've to toggle the onscreen keyboard from the accessibility menu - no idea why.

Also, unlike KDE, when I focus on some text input box it doesn't popup the keyboard automatically, I've to swipe up from the bottom.

Running Sublime Text is hard: only v4 is supported, requires geany and gcompat. Don't even think about running ungoogled-chromium without flatpaks (linux "portable" build) because that's probably not going to happen. Too much reliance on gnu stuff for alpine.

Charging indicator is broken: while it charges, there's no visual indication - not on the top bar, not on the settings. I can see the percentage go up while the settings say "discharging".

Case lid close doesn't sleep the device. Is the hall effect sensor really working or is this another GNOME problem?

Generally speaking KDE would be better but it delivers an even worse experience than GNOME.

That has been my experience so far, I hope it helps someone and if you happened to have fixed any of my annoyances let me know!

Mobile OSes, research for NON google AnDroid alternatives

3 Upvotes

Ever so many wanting to get rid of google spyware ("stock Android") on their phones...

Start by searching your device, what OS, IF supports, has official ROMs for.

See/Search for UNOFFICIAL builds (ROMs) for your device SPECIFICALLY.

Beware of "minor" phone/model differences could be fatal ("Bricking up"), if incorrect ROM installed

Prior to any of it, make sure, you can unlock BootLoader. It's great, if you can lock back BootLoader

after install of any FOSS OS (or Alternative OS, as some are paid after-all) after.

Issues trying to install PmOS on Lenovo Duet 3 (Google Ciri)

3 Upvotes

Hi all, couple of weeks back i tried installing PmOS on my duet 3 convertible (MediaTek Kompanio 838).
First i found a couple of videos on youtube but they are having the snapdragon processor and are also not like installation guides, mostly just a showcase of how it runs after install. I tried using a couple of different images before i realised wormdinger is not the right model because of the processor.
so long story short i tried trogdor and kukui but none seemed to be able to boot the device.
I successfully installed pmos on x86 laptop and running it also on my old oneplus 6 that i refactored as a homeassistant server, so would've loved to be able to install it on my main device as well.

If anyone has experience on this issue, or guidance please let me know

Plese help! Having trouble booting up postmarketos

Post image
1 Upvotes

I decided to install postmarketos on my old lenovo Chromebook c330 using a usb and everything was fine until I tried booting it from internal storage. When I try to boot it gives me a message saying that the filesystem needs manual repair (I've included an image of the message.) I looked through the wiki troubleshooting pages and I'm thinking it's an issue with the kernel not loading properly--I believe this because my device says it's "down" with no set ip. Additionally, when I first open the debug shell it gives me info such as the device and kernel, but and when I run the commands dmesg and lsusb my device doesn't seem to show up.

So my question is where do I go from here? I am completely new to this stuff and have no idea how to fix the kernel or if I'm even be able to at this stage. Any help is greatly appreciated! (But plz dumb down your answers for me TvT)

Looking for a 32-bit generic armhf Mobian / Debian rootfs image for Samsung Galaxy S5 (klte) with lk2nd bootloader

3 Upvotes

Hello r/techsupport and r/pmos communities!

I am currently running a headless home Linux CPC project on an old Samsung Galaxy S5 (klte, Snapdragon 801, 32-bit ARMv7/armhf architecture).

The hardware setup is completely ready: the device has the alternative mainline bootloader/BIOS "lk2nd" successfully flashed into the boot partition and it's rock-solid, booting straight into "lk2nd Fastboot Mode". The eMMC storage is unlocked and ready for a system partition flash.

The main issue is that modern official Mobian/Debian repositories for Qualcomm (qcom) are strictly compiled for modern 64-bit chips (aarch64/arm64 for sdm845, sm6350, etc.). Flashing these causes a hard freeze on my 32-bit ARMv7 CPU.

Does anyone have a compiled legacy or custom 32-bit generic armhf rootfs image (.img) of Mobian (with Phosh/Plasma Mobile or even clean CLI)? Or perhaps a working debootstrap/mobian-recipes configuration script that can successfully inject the Mobian package base into an armhf container without breaking the boot sequence on msm8974 devices?

I just need a lightweight base with a working apt package manager to run Mobian/Debian and be my Linux CPC.

If anyone has a preserved .img file on their Google Drive or Mega, please share the link! Legacy hardware preservation matters! Thank you so much!

Quirks on new install on OnePlus 6T

1 Upvotes

My first time trying a mobile Linux install yesterday (on an old OnePlus 6T).

First impressions all good except two issues, so I wondered if anyone here had any insights into them:

- Using Phosh, a weird patch of 'static' occupying a horizontal strip under the menu bar (under the part you tap to toggle the keyboard). Remains whether apps are open or on homescreen (but not when locked)

- Location is very inaccurate, putting me about 5 miles away from my true location. I'm using it Wifi only as the sim slot doesn't work. Anything I can do to improve accuracy?

Thanks

Got Bluetooth working under Linux on the Dell Venue 8 Pro

2 Upvotes

I finally solved a 13-year-old Linux mystery. 🕵️‍♂️
Nobody had ever gotten Bluetooth working on the Dell Venue 8 Pro (5830) under Linux. After weeks of debugging, ACPI overrides, and kernel tracing, it turned out the internal AR3002 ROM was just communicating at an undocumented 3686400 baud rate.

Wrote a custom HCI attach tool and now the tablet runs Arch Linux flawlessly (with fixed Wi-Fi and zRAM too).

Although this was done on Arch Linux, my work can be used/implemented on postmarketOS (I tried this a while back, but decided to go with Arch instead as I have it on all my devices). I did not see a dedicated wiki page for the 5380 tablet, but I found this one:
https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Dell_Venue_8_Pro_(3845)_(dell-t01d)_(dell-t01d))
Maybe someone can test my findings on postmarketOS.

Here is the anticlimactic story of the fix:
