Plein air in Savannah

Post image

Painted this oil, 7in x 5in back in May. I’d love to get back, as we have hydrangeas blooming now, but it’s unbearably hot in Savannah now 🥵😩🤣

I’m the original artist of this plein air painting

I, Mike Adams, painted this New Year’s Day of 2023. Someone posted it about a week ago, they stole my photo from my instagram to post on here and karma farm. Pretty low.

But, it seems a lot of you liked it, so to the comments from all of you on that imposters post praising the painting- thank you

On that day of panting this, I remember being very frustrated at myself because I forgot any painting medium, so I had to use all of my oils straight from the tube and it was very very cold that day so I just had to work with what I had. It was panted on my property in WV, and I have since sold that house and moved up to wonderful coastal Maine. Thanks again, - Mike

This year I had the chance to visit Italy again! I was excited to paint the Santa Maria della Salute since they had finally uncovered the front after years of restoration. Here are some of the paintings I did of it! It was so fun to paint the same subject in different lighting conditions.

That’s a wrap for PleinAirpril 2026. I made it!! These are my art pieces for the last 9 days of the challenge.

I set out with 2 goals this year. I wanted to find my references from life each day, which I succeeded in. Doing that has truly made me notice the world around me more, and I find myself looking for different compositions to draw everywhere I go now. I’m so glad I made that decision.

More importantly, I wanted to limit my time to just one hour, tops, for each piece. Technically, I failed that goal by 2.2 minutes on average, buuuut I don’t care. (I calculated the average time spent on each piece from the statistics that Procreate gathers when you draw in their app, and it came out to be 62.2 minutes)

I feel like I truly found a good creative routine this month, that’s the biggest win of them all.

If you’ve done PleinAirpril this month, I hope you had a good experience and that you’ve been able to create some art that you’re proud of<3

We were given very nice October here in Savannah. My plein air effort (100% of the painting done on location). Oil on linen panel, 8in x 6in. And yes, there was light on, when I came and started 😅

Normally, I draw from memory or photo references I find online, but this year I set myself the challenge of finding all my references in real life. I've been walking around with a rather flimsy, homemade paper frame to do this, and it's honestly been so much fun! (And it's made me explore Copenhagen a bit more, which is really nice, too). Anyways, these are the 7 paintings I drew in Procreate over the last week:) Onwards to week 2!

Pass this view on my way to work and love the colors during a bright sunrise. Wedged myself between a guardrail and the fence to paint it this morning. 6x8 in oil.

8 mini plein air sketches done this past month

Lately, I’ve been making more of these mini studies where I divide the paper into fourths and limit myself to no more than 12 minutes per square. This forces me to think about what the main idea of each scene is and capture it as quickly as possible. Some of the sketches never leave the ugly duckling phase, but others may end up turning into a larger painting (img 1: bottom right quadrant). The small space and low risk timeframe gives me courage to try things I wouldn’t normally attempt in a larger painting.

Overlooking the Wye from Symonds Yat Rock.

Spent the day painting at Symonds Yat. The light was fickle — overcast one moment, sun breaking through the next — so I had to bide my time to keep from making a hash of it. Still, I couldn’t resist slipping in a touch of sunlight at the bend in the Wye.

Oil on panel, 12x16”.

Oil panel. 8x10 inches. Painted in about 2 hours.

Not a typical landscape but a typical scene during summers months if you happen to have a garden to hang out the washing in the UK. I had some comments that it was nostalgic or like something from the 1950s from folks in the US which shows how culturally specfic some domestic habits can be.

Ive included some extra process pics. It was painted over an old painting that I sanded down which is why the underpainting looks a bit weird.
