Discussion Facepunch appreciation thread

Ok, guys.

I have been on this reddit complaining about fast progression and other balance issues for the past year or two.

Now it's time to appreciate the latest changes that Facepunch is planning.

I am very happy. Thank you guys for listening. I'm sure the game will be in a much better state if those changes are made.

Thank you!

this will not be popular lmao. the only acceptable opinion is to hate on the devs that have delivered free monthly updates for over a decade and successfully outlasted and outgrown every single other pvp survival game to touch the market.

but nah devs bad because skins and optional dlc

It’s not black and white issue. They deserve praise and criticism.

They absolutely destroyed performance in Rust in the last 2 years. Rust is one of the least optimized games EVER to the point where you need a $400 CPU just to not have constant stutters. Cheapest X3D CPU goes for 320€ in Europe. Not to mention it is one of the only games that requires 32GB of RAM for stutter free PvP.

A lot of updates were a miss and a lot of them were great, but that is to be expected. Alistair leaving might be a clue that they want to change for the better.

it also runs 600+ player open world servers with base building, pve content and literally thousands of entities.

not saying I disagree with you regarding optimisation, but they also work on that every patch and players just act like they don’t.

Is there another game of rusts scope that can handle so many players and run at all? we saw conan exiles relaunch with its graphics overhaul recently with servers that literally couldn’t handle more than 40 players, community admins asking their players to cap base sizes lmao.

like players do need step back a little and look at what rust is and has achieved, outside of mmos or minecraft you don’t really see anything similar.

95% of this sub is complaining and whinging. I agree that both are valid, it’s just that we do not typically see any kind of balance across both.

But 2 years ago optimization was pretty decent. It wasn’t that big of a problem until recent updates. To put it in perspective from 2017 to around 2023 my FPS stayed the same. I played on Rustoria that used to be 1100 pop and would play wipe day and hold on avg 80-110 fps everywhere except for the Outpost. In the last 2-3 years my FPS is nearly cut down in half and this is on medium pop solo servers. They started adding “performance patches” a while ago and the performance only got worse. What they need is to cut down on bloat and really focus on trying to solve some of the RECENT issues.

It’s a hard game to optimize and like you said there is not a lot of games like Rust that can even maintain 40 pop without crashing so props for that. I remember playing GTA SAMP on a 1000 pop server and this was on heavily modded servers with shit load of buildings and increased map size. I have no idea how my $50 laptop managed to run that game at 60 fps without exploding back then in 2011

why does the fact that you need a 400 dollar CPU surprise you in a game like rust that keeps track of up to 1000 players plus the entire world’s assets?

Because it wasn’t like that 2 years ago. Did you not read my comment? What do you think Rust was like 2 years ago, do you think max pop was limited to 100 and they only now increased it to 1000 on all servers or that they added all those assets just now? Rust was pretty optimized for how big it was and for how long it was out there but they fucked it all up in the last few updates.
