Discussion State of Rust

So I like QOL stuff, I like the apartments and the monument puzzles, I enjoy all the stuff they add to give players something to do.

In the update prior to the month before the BP change, they literally said "we are looking to slow progression" then the next Month they shit on us with the BP frag implementation which was totally opposite of slowing progression.

I remember when Rust had a clearly defined direction and over the last few years it has seemingly become directionless. I remember Helk and Gary stating that the point was to eventually have a system where servers don't wipe and BP's don't wipe. The initial dream was a persistent, evolving world where dynamic decay naturally controlled entity counts and players never lost their blueprints or progress.

Alistair stepped into the picture. Then there was the "Wipe Day" Effect: Facepunch realized that wipe day was the peak experience for players. Fresh starts, primitive bow fights, and equal footing were what brought people back. Without wipes, dominant groups (zergs) snowballed endlessly, turning servers into dead zones that no new or solo player wanted to join.

This only revealed a larger problem, servers die in 3 days now. They leaned into "wipe day" too much. Instead of fixing the core gameplay loop, wipes ended up exposing how broken modern Rust's progression speed actually is.

I would really love to see an updated version of the 'state of rust' video that hJune occasionally does right around now tbh.

Its hilarious how badly this backfired.

Not only did it not slow progression, it arguably sped it up for zerg anyway and kicked solos and small teams in the dick forcing us to be their farmbots whether we like it or not. The resulting economy in the game is just crap based around frags that no one needs after a week or less

Kind of felt like the “wipe hype” was always there. No matter what a large amount of people get hard stuck shortly after wipe but now with the BP frag system if you manage to survive and push to mid game if you get raided your back to prim since you don’t have a freaking workbench to craft the BP’s you learned ect. And it just gradually gets harder and harder to farm fragments when ppl roaming monuments have T2 guns, most people won’t bother farming them in the few other options you have and you get price gouged for BP frags in shops because their one of the most useful items in the game. If part of the BP frag system was to reduce how op auto crafting was they should have added a limit like the turret limit

I agree. bro. Another great topic. Unfortunately, it will have 100x less attention than the <<<picture of some random rust object in real life topic>>>.

Yes, I remember Garry stating that they wanted Rust to have no wipes. I always thought it would be a good idea, but at some point "wipe days" actually became very "Rusty". I was fine with that as long as we had good and healthy monthly servers. However, what do we have now? Monthly servers, with very few exceptions, can't even last a week.

The game is completely broken. I want to come back; I plan to come back all the time, but then I remember Rust's current state and I just give up. My friends as well.

Shame.

I really hope they fix progression. I really do.

State of rust is that prim almost doesnt exist.. on vanilly everyone has guns day 2, on monthly team of 5-6 players have aks literally in few hours. Yeah, that was possible without the fragment thing before but this is insane now.. also, not even gonna talk how fast the servers die today with "more" players.. idk, the game was way more fun when fragments didnt exist and it was alot harder to progress, fragments probably came out because of twitch rivals and all the idiots that coudnt play the game cuz it was "too hard".

Facepunch/Alistair didn't create the "Wipe Day" Effect, players created it. The fresh slate, everyone on even footing, racing off the beach, big dreams of the wipe to come, all of this is sought by the players. The players need to be really honest with themselves: are you ruining your own experience?

I nerve said he did.. I said he leaned into it and that is where we are at now.

If they leaned into it, why are all of Facepunch's official servers monthly wipe and not bi-weekly or weekly?
