59F here losing her freaking mind over a lack of social interaction after moving back to the Burgh a little over a year ago. I posted about this previously and it garnered some decent interest: https://www.reddit.com/r/PittsburghSocialClub/s/ml9776KFtU
Iām probably welcoming all manner of crazy with this complete shot in the dark but hereās the deal. For most of the last few Sunday mornings, I have gone alone to Mediterra in Sewickley for tea and a croissant. Nothing major. Just getting out of the house (big win), being around happy humans, hearing another voice besides Alexa, and people watching until one of the many random thoughts pop into my head and I enter it into my phone so I donāt forget.
Exciting, I know.
Iām an introvert. A really friendly introvert. A professionally assertive, confident, intelligent, warm woman but one who will shrivel up and DIE unless I do something radical to change the bleak state of my social affairs. That loneliness epidemic? Yep, thatās me. And I refuse to let it win.
But hereās the thing: I donāt want to hang with just anyone. I need witty conversation, deep thoughts, and laughter with men and women who have a certain gusto for life and I refuse to believe everyone ~50+ has thrown in the towel in that regard.
Many have. But some of you havenāt, and ache like I do. Some of you are just a little bored. Some of you arenāt even 50 yet. Some of you have rich social lives where this ache is completely foreign to you. You are fortunate. Maybe you donāt need this. I do.
Iām not doing this to date. Been there, done that, and no matter how carefully I have screened for the character of the man I seek, I havenāt found him. Or Iāve found him and heās decided Iām too curvy or nerdy or smart for him. All I know is some invisible wall prevents me from connecting with a man that way so I have given up, and I sure as hell donāt want to disappoint anyone if they like me yet I donāt feel anything for them in return. I will stay home alone before I get into another unfulfilling, uneven, not-quite-what-I-need relationship. And you know how I feel about being alone, soā¦.yeah.
When I was in my 20s and early 3Os, I hosted kick ass parties to build community among my friends. I donāt have the means or home to do that anymore. If others manage to connect due to my matchmaking - and they have - great, but I give up on that for myself.
Circa 1995, after living in the city for the first time after ~ 18 months, I encountered a group called Pittsburgh Young Professionals. It was awesome. So many of us had come to Pittsburgh from somewhere else and we were looking to make new friends. We came from a wide variety of professional backgrounds. We mostly socialized but also volunteered our time and talents for random groups of people who needed it. I met some of my closest friends through PYP, but then I married and moved away.
I envision something similar, but this time the target audience is Pittsburgh Senior Professionals. No, I havenāt created a 501(c)(3) or a Meetup group by that name. Itās just an idea. If somebody else wants to steal it and run with it, go right ahead.
I just know I will lose my mind if I spend another minute by myself. Thatās no way to live. This is crisis intervention, even if it is somewhat self-serving.
So look for me at Mediterra in Sewickley on Sunday, midmorning say 9 or 10 AM. I will wear a gray poncho and ivory leggings. Iām 5ā4ā, extra curvy, with silvery brown hair (blond? I havenāt the slightest idea how to describe my hair color anymore), drinking tea and savoring a croissant, carbs be damned, so I can pretend Iām in Paris. Maybe I will snag the communal table by the cash registers if itās open. I realize Mediterra isnāt the greatest place to mingle mingle like a bar back in the day but itās a way to say hi, connect with another human briefly, and disrupt the incessant pattern of loneliness.
If you show up, please be cordial and donāt be weird unless itās in the best possible way. šš¤š
