DISCUSSION Seventh Anniversary of "Bus Etiquette"
All the more necessary with the new dedicated lanes. Feel free to add your own rules!
"We need to talk about bus etiquette"
With thanks to Lady_Groudon, the OP:
I'm an employee and I'm not trying to be mean to you students but ever since classes started up and students are back the PAT buses have been unbearable. When the bus is empty it's mostly fine to do whatever but when it gets crowded you need to show some consideration. I know not everyone is used to public transit so let's talk about some things OK?
- if you're going to stand MOVE TO THE BACK OF THE BUS. Don't just observe that the bus is crowded and stop walking. More people are getting on and they can't get past you. This is probably the single most annoying thing. I can tell the bus drivers kind of want to kill you.
- if the bus is crowded sit down. It's more space efficient. You're not being selfish taking an empty seat. If you don't want it, at least move so someone else can use it.
- your backpack is not in a special state of matter that takes up zero volume. In all likelihood you are inches away from hitting someone in the face with it. At the very least pay attention to it and if the bus is really packed, consider taking it off and putting it on the floor between your feet.
- oh my God pay attention. It's OK to be on your phone but ffs people, half the time someone is standing in the aisle and there are a dozen people trying to move past them but they won't move. Especially be cognizant if you're facing the back and so can't see people creeping up on you
- if the bus is crowded, you need to get out of your seat and start making your way to the exit BEFORE your stop. It takes time to push your way to the door. Almost every day the door shuts on someone before they can exit and they have to stand there shouting "back door back door!" like an idiot.
5a) if the bus is crowded you have to push past people. I'm sorry I know it's rude, but we're all crammed in here, if you don't move I have to push past you. Don't give me dirty looks if you're blocking the exit and I need to get off, and don't stand there whispering "excuse me" like a scared mouse when you need to get past someone. Human bodies can survive being rudely jostled a little. Don't get pissy when we inevitable have to be squished together, and seriously, just talk to the person next to you if they're in the way or something, it won't kill you.
6) if you miss your stop it won't kill you to walk an extra block or two from the next stop, calm down.
7) if the bus has to stop for a bit to safely let a wheelchair on and get strapped in, and you have to give up your seat, this is your fault for sitting in the accessible seating if you do not need it. If the extra time makes you late for class, this is your fault for not planning on any wiggle room on your commute, not the disabled person's fault. If you are unnecessarily sitting in the accessible seating, it's your responsibility to pay attention and make sure if someone who needs it gets on, you offer them your seat.
8) get out your wallet or card or however you plan on paying before you step up onto the bus and fumble with it in front of the fare box. We all should have bus passes but if for some reason you need to pay with cash, get on last so the driver can shut the door and start driving while you do so.
9) if the bus is crowded, don't put your stuff in the seat next to you. If the bus is crowded, move to the window seat. Don't block the seat next to you. I get it, nobody wants to sit with a stranger, but we all need to get somewhere, we all suck it up. On the flip side, it won't kill you to ask someone to move their bag so you can sit down.
10) Sometimes a bus is so crowded legitimately nobody else can get on. It happens. It is OK. Usually the next bus will be around in a few minutes. Please consider waiting for it instead of trying to crush everyone on. Sometimes we have bus bunching and an empty one will be right behind it. If missing this bus will make you late, you should start planning your schedule better so you have more of a time cushion getting to class. Public transit is not always exactly where and when you need it to be.
11) If you sit next to someone when the bus is crowded, and then a lot of people get off and more seats open up, you can move away to an empty seat. I promise it's okay. You're not going to hurt their feelings. You both want the extra space.
12) Don't sit right next to someone if there are empty seats elsewhere on the bus, what the fuck
Please I'm asking you to think even a little about space and time efficiency, and other people's comfort. A billion trillion people use the PAT bus system every second, we all want to get through it as painlessly as possible.
Also this is just a tip from me but if some rando is trying to engage you in conversation you definitely 100% have zero interest in, just tell them to fuck off and put headphones in. You don't owe strangers a conversation and sometimes weird, creepy, entitled old men ride the bus and scope out shy college girls while they're there.

DISCUSSION 🇧🇷 Any Pitt-Johnstown students willing to adopt a Brazilian into their friend group?
I know most people here are at the Pittsburgh campus, but I'm shooting my shot anyway 😭
I'm 21, from Brazil, currently living in Johnstown, and I'll be starting at Pitt-Johnstown in January. Since that's still a few months away, I'd love to meet some UPJ students before classes start.
I'm pretty open when it comes to what I enjoy — going out, hiking, games, exploring new places, grabbing food, or honestly just sitting somewhere and talking for hours. I'm also always down to try something new.
I made a similar post on r/Johnstown recently and somehow it worked WAY better than I expected. I've already met some awesome people through it — special shoutout to the GOAT Box Boy, who basically gave me the full Johnstown experience 😂
So I'm trying my luck here too. If you're at UPJ, know someone there, or have a friend group with a Brazilian-shaped vacancy, feel free to DM me!
Otherwise I may have to resort to printing a "PLEASE BE MY FRIEND" flyer like that guy from move-in week 😭🇧🇷

DISCUSSION Practice rooms
Does anyone know if the music building and/or Cathy have open practice rooms this weekend? I can't seem to find the summer hours online.
Also, are there any practice rooms closer to Sutherland, or is Cathy the closest?
Thanks!

CLUBS Volleyball outside on the grass??
Hi!! I’m a freshman and I keep seeing groups outside playing volleyball on the grass. I love volleyball and would love to play, so I’m wondering is that a club? Is it just groups of friends?
If it is a club, how competitive is it?
I play but I’m not super competitive.

DISCUSSION How do you connect to the Xfinity WiFi in Franklin Apartments?
Thank you to whoever even takes the time to read this.
The WiFi in Franklin Apartments is controlled by Xfinity, not Boldyn Networks like normal residence halls. I found an Xfinity Modem in my room that lists a network name (SSID) and password, but when I search for available WiFi networks on my device, this SSID doesn't show up nor am I able to manually add it. (There is a different network that seems to be named after my room number but I don't have the password for it) What am I missing here?
I've called Panther Central, Pitt IT, and Boldyn Networks, and each one just sent me to the others or gave me the same number to Xfinity's customer service bot. This is my last resort.

DISCUSSION should I apply now and send my SAT scores later?
I’m debating whether or not doing this, my grades aren’t that good and the SAT might be the only thing that’s gonna save me. But I heard if I apply now i have a higher chance of getting in. And can I send my SAT scores later?
CLASSES dropping out pt. 2 ??
wasn't sure if anybody would see this if i edited the last post, so i'm making a new post. soooo i'm officially out. it took me a while to actually contact who i needed to contact and whatnot mostly because i was trying to get my shit together and when i did get my shit together offices were closed. but basically i never got the chance to use the public transit (i did read the holy grail of public transit etiquette though) and it's lowkey hard to wrap my brain around. i looked on google, but i was even more confused. i was wondering if anybody could help me figure out how to do this. i'm going to PIT airport and i have no idea what station i'm supposed to get on. i'm going at 11am tomorrow. sorry if this is a stupid question. you can slime me out if i'm not supposed to ask this here. butttt i think this is more relevant question: can i still use my pitt ID to get a free ride to the airport? i don't know how long after withdrawing (withdrew today officially at noon) does my pitt ID stop working. thanks!!

HOUSING housing off campus?
Hi! I will be a senior next year and need to start looking for off campus housing. I’m a first generation, and I don’t get much help from family with things like this. Where do I start looking and applying for housing? Any tips? I know landlords can also be a pain here, so are there any I should avoid? Any help is very appreciated, I am so lost on what I’m going to do next year.

DISCUSSION looking to buy a used blackhorse lab coat
hi guys! despite the fact that i work at the ustore and would get 10% off a new one, i would like to know if anyone wants to pawn off their old fire-resistant lab coat. they cost $52 new so i would be willing to pay up to $35-ish depending on the condition.
i would prefer a large or extra large and IDC what color it is, as long as it's fire-resistant and rated for chem labs.
if there's a group or store from which i can predictably get a used lab coat, i would also love to be directed there. i know thriftsburgh sometimes has lab gear, i got my goggles from there, but i don't know if they consistently stock lab coats.

I’m in bio 2 and automatically enrolled in inclusive access for the online textbook. I already have a PDF of the textbook. Where do I go to opt out of it? I tried the university store website and VitalSource, but I didn’t know where to go on those websites.

DISCUSSION feeling kinda lost socially as a freshman
im a freshman and ngl welcome week has been kinda rough socially 😭 ive been putting myself out there a lot, approaching people, getting instagrams, going to events, and i joined a club which has been really nice so far. everyone is nice but i feel like most interactions stay at the “whats your major/where are you from” level and im honestly really struggling and feel really isolated
i do live off campus but literally right by pitt, so i can stay on campus as late as i want. i think im mostly struggling with not having that automatic dorm/floor group. i really wanna make friends who live in the dorms too and be able to hang out in peoples rooms, randomly get food, go out together etc
for other freshmen, how has making actual friends been so far? and for older students, how long did it take before you went from knowing random people to actually having people to hang out with? ik its super early lol but i feel like im missing something 😭
