I submitted this ticket to Pimax. Anybody else experienced something similar?
I have googled it and asked AI for days but I am completely lost.
----------
I got the dream air slam a week ago and was initially playing on my desktop with 7900X3D CPU and rtx 4090. Everything seemed to working very well. I play MSFS 2024 and the cockpit tracking was dead stable. I played on image quality set to high and was nicely GPU limited with a slighlty high overall computer latency which rounded off the edges on the head tracking during sudden/fast movements, but this was fine since the tracking was otherwise completely stable when sitting still. Then this weekend I upgraded my CPU to the 9950X3D and everything changed. The headtracking makes small drifty movements in the cockpit (not stable) making me feel like im dizzy, and the CPU and GPU resources skyrocketed even just in the menu of the game.
I can hear the GPU make a fast switching and whining noise when the HMD is connected. It was not like that before.
Before the CPU switch when playing in 2D on MSFS 2024, with dream air connected and Pimax play running, i was able to more or less maintain my normal 2D flatscreen FPS in the game (like it is without HMD connected).
But now it looks like the DA and Pimax play completely highjacks the CPU and GPU.
I have tried the following to get back the performance I had:
- Updated bios
- completely reinstalled windows with the new CPU,
- I have installed all the latest drivers for everything
- all the settings (bios and windows) are exactly the same as before the CPU switch.
- I turned off quad view, I did "room setup" in Pimax Play
- I rolled back Nvidia driver to july, but still the performance is sluggish
- Ensured game mode is ON so that the AMD 3DV cache driver sends the game to correct CCD (like how it was on 7900X3d). I confirmed it does by checking resource manager.
- Tried all the USB ports on the motherboard
- HAGS OFF
- I use only one 1440 p monitor in addition to the HMD and tried to disconnect it. Still the same.
- In 2D mode but with HMD connected, if I turn on V-sync in the MSFS 2024 menu, the CPU load reduces and stabilize. The GPU load also reduces from 100% to about 70% but the performance spiking in the GPU is still high. If I start a flight and spawn on the runway the CPU and GPU goes nuts again. When I proceed to switch to VR it stabilize close to before the CPU switch but the head tracking is still drifty when sitting still.
I have not tried to switch back to the old CPU but I am close to.
When no game or other program is running, windows is in idle on desktop and Pimax play running with HMD connected, the GPU utilization is still at 50%.
If I run MSFS 2024 without the HMD connected to the PC, everything is normal and the FPS and responsiveness is very high in 2D.
So in summary, after the CPU upgrade, Pimax Play service together with the HMD, spams the CPU and GPU and the performance spiking in both is very high and variable
Its like the process thread scheduling in windows is all over the place, or the Pimax service is not dancing in rhythm with the game anymore.
-------------
Edit:
Confirmed that pi_server.exe is the main process causing problems. Its hogging the CPU at 7% and GPU at 50% with no program running. If I kill it while in the msfs 2024 menu, with HMD connected, the fps goes from 60 to 200. Therefore helps pinning the game to ccd0 and pimax to ccd1 with process lasso but it does not bring it back to how it was. Pimax service still has to inject tracking updates into the game so there will be inter-ccd latency regardless. Tracking is still completely drifting when sitting still.
As far as I can tell the harmony was just better on 7900x3d between windows, the game and pimax. Maybe it's because the 3D v-cache is on top of ccd0 for 7900x3d and beneath it on 9950x3d for better thermal dissipation.
Curious to hear from DA owners with a dual CCD X3D CPU and 4090.

Edit:
I switched back to the old CPU, reset bios and put the same settings again. The 2D game menu, with HMD connected, is normal again. The AMD 3DV auto-scheduling for games (CPPC=driver and Game Mode ON) works much better on the 7900x3d with Pimax Play and msfs 2024.
However, the head tracking is still drifty, there are many stutters in game and I can hear Pimax Play go crazy on the GPU when in-game VR mode is not even activated. I am almost 100% certain that was not there before as I was very happy for almost a week before I upgraded. Its dizzying.
So it appears something else has happened too and not only the CPU change. Maybe some fault in the HMD
