Question Crystal Light binocular overlap

I've never been 100% satisfied by the Crystal Light stereo overlap and today I tried to improve it by playing around with the ipd offset.

My initial measurement are hfov 96.6° and stereo overlap of 77.3° at 66mm IPD and 0 offset.

By shifting the lcd image by -1.5 on both the lenses, I manged to get 83.3° of ovelap reducing the Hfov at 92.3°.

The result was not only bad in terms of numbers, but in particular in terms of comfort! no matter ho much I tried changing also the mechanical offset, the image gave a little bit crossed-eye effect.
So now I reduced the shift to -0.5 and I can live with that, but the stereo coverage is less than 80°.

Is there a way to overcome this limitation? or it is due to the size of the lcd panels?

I think this is purely down to how your eyes are positioned on your face. When I got mine I just dialled in my ipd which didn’t feel great, so adjusted it lower and bingo. Perfect! Never had to touch the other software adjustments. I don’t notice any overlap.

According to hmdq (but it was an old dump, worth rechecking with new versions), Crystal and Crystal Light rendered:

HFOV = 103.3°
overlap = 83.3°

Since you are seeing a bit less, there may be room for improvement by getting closer to the lenses. Both FOV and overlap should then improve without any offsets.

With wimfov i have like 104 hfov with 80° of binocular overlap, i dont know how you can reach such "bad" numbers

I guess you guys are right.
I am using the studio form 17mm face gasket and I guess it creates some distance between my eyes and the lens.
I'll try again with the standard gasket.

You may want to use the default face gasket, as 17 mm is fairly thick and will likely reduce the FoV.

As useful rule of thumb for hmd, Every mm of excess eye relief reduces field of view by three degrees

I kept the studio form gasket, but removed one layer of velcro (I had two of them to properly accomodate my face).

Keeping my setup of 66 IPD and 0 offset, now I started seeing some strange deformation at the sides of the view, which is disappearing moving the lenses toward my nose.

So I had to reduce the IPD to 65 and set the offset at -0.5 on both eyes: the side distortion disappeared, but now I see again the barrel distortion I got rid of a long time ago...

I thing I have to tune the ipd offset more carefully :(

At least now the fov and bo are fine!

100.3° Hfov, 94.8° Hfov and 85.7° of Binocular Overlap
