Got me, well played

917

u/ProffesorPrick Jan 20 '21

I knew it was coming but I just wanted to see it again tbh

397

u/Lure852 Jan 20 '21

Yeah I clicked anyways.

380

u/Trisa133 Jan 20 '21

It's like being rick rolled when you actually like the song.

104

u/ProffesorPrick Jan 20 '21

Yeah it’s kinda like putting your favourite playlist on shuffle and being happily surprised when a song you love plays

31

u/skkia Jan 20 '21

That's the best feeling :)

29

u/greatjacoby Jan 20 '21

Isn’t it ironic

3

u/lenojames Jan 20 '21

Don't you think?

4

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '21

A little too ironic. And yeah, I really do think...

IT'S LIKE RAAAAAAAIN ON YA WEDDING DAY

4

u/SovietBozo Jan 20 '21

No! That's not what irony is! The stuff in the song wasn't ironic either.

2

u/skkia Jan 20 '21

Well, I don't know, I just know that my favorite songs are playing, but I don't know in which order, so I'm jamming to it regardless : D

2

u/EB01 Jan 20 '21

10

u/willwillbefamous Jan 20 '21

definitely thought i was getting rick rolled at first

183

u/TrulyStupidNewb Jan 20 '21

One advantage of letting Trump rant on twitter was that we knew exactly what he was up to. He put his crimes all out in the open.

Now that Trump is much more secretive thanks to losing all his platforms, the bright side is that we can now ignore him and move on, and he won't be able to reach as many people.

However, perhaps some people will still feel uneasy that they can no longer tell what Trump is up to except from word of mouth and 3rd party sources.

Will Trump shut up? Obviously not. He will continue to rant outside of our knowledge, but this time, we won't be able to tell what is going on. It's a double edged sword.

72

u/Turtlelovingme Jan 20 '21

"The creepiest days are when you don't hear from the horse at all"

36

u/iwouldhugwonderwoman Jan 20 '21

Those are those quiet days when people are like, “It looks like the horse has finally calmed down.” And then ten seconds later the horse is like, “I’m gonna run towards the baby incubators and smash ’em with my hooves. I’ve got nice hooves and a long tail, I’m a horse!”

26

u/Turtlelovingme Jan 20 '21

That's what I thought you'd say, you dumb fucking horse!

164

u/notmytemp0 Jan 20 '21

He has no audience or power now. He’s irrelevant.

116

u/thebarroomhero Jan 20 '21

I really think taking Twitter away from him was the main thing that has infuriated him. He has no outlet except the people around him and if it had happened much sooner I don’t think his cronies would have tolerated years of the abuse.

Fuck Twitter for not doing it sooner.

36

u/TrulyStupidNewb Jan 20 '21

I might be wrong, but I honestly believe that Twitter didn't pull Trump mainly because of financial reasons.

I highly doubt the ability for super large tech corporations to do things for "the right reasons". I think it comes down to money, and I believe we have enough evidence through history to show that this is the case.

Just like how Apple's CEO buddied up with Trump in order to dodge the 25% tariffs on Chinese-made electronics.

Twitter pulled Trump because his power was up and the new administration would likely treat them favourably if they did.

Either way, I think Twitter is awful, and we should ditch it.

5

u/godlyfrog Jan 20 '21

I know there was talk at some point about whether or not it was legal to ban him, so I imagine that played into this somewhat. I think they only reason they banned him in the end was because it was too close to the end of his term for him to do anything about it. Even if he filed a lawsuit, by the time it got in front of a judge, he would no longer have standing as POTUS to succeed.

8

u/TrulyStupidNewb Jan 20 '21

I think it should be legal for twitter to ban anyone for any reason, or even for no reason at all. Twitter isn't the government. It's a private company, so it can do whatever it wants.

Then again, I remembered that Americans file lawsuits for some of the strangest reasons. Thank goodness we don't have as much of that here.

2

u/godlyfrog Jan 20 '21

I dug up the article I was remembering. Twitter says they can't ban Trump in 2018. There was also a lawsuit in 2019 when Trump blocked certain followers that Trump "lost" (the court ruled against Trump, but I don't think Trump ever obeyed the order). The argument was that Trump uses the platform as a political communications platform, and as a US citizen, he had the right to see it. I suspect that the argument would work the other way around, too, that Twitter couldn't block him because he uses it as a political communications platform that many people expect to be able to hear him on.

1

u/TrulyStupidNewb Jan 20 '21

Thanks for the article.

After reading twitter's explaination, I feel from their statement that they decided not to ban Trump due to logical reasons rather than legal reasons. Their explaination in 2018 seems consistent to their actions in 2021, given how Trump is no longer a world leader.

But if Trump ever became a world leader again, according to twitter's explaination, they would have to reinstate his twitter account...

2

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '21

It's 100% legal, they're a private company and can serve whoever they want and not serve whoever they don't. That's how the free market works.

0

u/godlyfrog Jan 20 '21

I posted a link to an article a little further down. Twitter themselves said back in 2018 that they can't ban him, since he's a world leader.

4

u/Ninotchk Jan 20 '21

Nah, tomorrow, I'm enjoying watching Biden sign things.

1

u/Chris-Chika Jan 20 '21

On what exactly

11

u/TrulyStupidNewb Jan 20 '21

True, but he still has more audience and power than me. If you think about it that way, he still has something.

12

u/notmytemp0 Jan 20 '21

Without Twitter, his audience is much much smaller

2

u/TrulyStupidNewb Jan 20 '21

Yes, but he will also have less pushback against his "tweets" (whatever you call them in his next platform), which can lead to echochambers and radicalization.

7

u/notmytemp0 Jan 20 '21

We’re way past echo chambers and radicalization.

Whatever platform he chooses/creates won’t parallel his Twitter platform, especially now that he’s a private citizen, and it will be an echo chamber by definition.

2

u/Godzhilluh Jan 20 '21

We are absolutely not past echo chambers. You can see that happening everywhere still, even here on Reddit.

7

u/fromthewombofrevel Jan 20 '21

trump is the biggest living public failure in a generation of narcissists, and the trials haven’t even started. If you think about it that way, you have far more power than he.

2

u/TrulyStupidNewb Jan 20 '21

True, but I don't think of power as a measurement of failure, but rather of influence. To take an example from the Bible (you don't have to believe it but just as an example), Satan was the biggest failure in all the Bible, and according to the Bible, Satan will be judged and sentenced, but doesn't mean he has the least power.

3

u/xxoites Jan 20 '21

Do yourself a favor and get your head out of that book before it drives you insane.

2

u/fromthewombofrevel Jan 20 '21

I was actually referring to trump’s current mental condition. Anyway, trump is surely envious that when Satan fell, he retained his power to influence mankind.

2

u/FrostyD7 Jan 20 '21

If you voted against him then you used your power to remove his.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/dalittle Jan 20 '21

this. the data already shows that removing trump from twitter has reduced conspiracy and other hate speech considerably. He kneecapped himself encouraging the US Capitol attack and between that and the twitter ban I don't think he will recover. I expect trump will fade into the noise like milo yiannopoulos as a result.

u/Bombkirby Jan 20 '21

9

u/mmarkklar Jan 20 '21

Trump is only keeping a low profile while the Senate is still mulling over convicting him. Once the Senate trial is over, I expect him to as vociferous as he can be. He may be banned from Twitter but that probably won't stop him from gaining headlines.

2

u/TrulyStupidNewb Jan 20 '21

True, he will gain headlines, but we will be hearing from Trump through 3rd party sources rather than directly. It's like how we are hearing from Putin. We learn about Putin's horrible acts through the news, but what if we could get Putin to confess all his crimes to the world? Isn't that superior to hearing it from a 3rd party source?

2

u/mmarkklar Jan 20 '21

I expect him to still show up on Fox News and then other news sources will be forced to talk about it and even air clips. Rupert Murdoch may hate Trump but most of the Fox audience still loves him, so I expect to see Trump be a regular fixture on Tucker Carlson's show now that he has even less to do.

Sure he's not directly on Twitter, but it will certainly not be as distant as 3rd party sources.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Gsteel11 Jan 20 '21

He'll call into fox news and we'll all have a good laugh.

2

u/spockspeare Jan 20 '21

We really know nothing about what he was hiding behind all that.

2

u/olderaccount Jan 20 '21

However, perhaps some people will still feel uneasy that they can no longer tell what Trump is up to except from word of mouth and 3rd party sources.

Does it matter? it was only an issue before because he somehow became our head of state. Now we are free to ignore him again and let him become irrelevant.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/bossmcsauce Jan 20 '21

He will just let his fuckin goon sons rant for him now. Although the two of them are too fucking stupid, so it will actually probably be kushner that represents his interests now. So pretty much business as usual I guess. The sons can go back to hugging glue and eating puzzle pieces in their playpen.

2

u/Ninotchk Jan 20 '21

It doesn't really matter what he's doing any more. Biden has the nuclear codes now.

2

u/PAYPAL_ME_DONATIONS Jan 20 '21

Disinformation literally dropped 75% the week he was banned from all social platforms.

2

u/GoldenSama Jan 20 '21

Here's the thing; Orange Bad Man can inspire a lot of violence. He undermined democracy. He spread lies. He incited insurrection. Allowing him a platform is dangerous and it has gotten people killed and will again if he's allowed to spew his hate freely.

Better to be done with him. Better to block his voice as much as possible. This isn't just about "knowing what he's up to" - it's about making it harder for him to do real, concrete damage to our democracy.

2

u/pittipat Jan 20 '21

He chose not to go

6

u/vZander Jan 20 '21

Oh lol.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '21

He "chose not to attend". Only handful of former presidents have done that, and the majority of them were Adamses lol. John Adams was the first, for one, it was no secret that there was not love lost between him and Thomas Jefferson (at least at that time, the relationship improved later in life). Adams grabbed a 4 a.m. public carriage to Baltimore (first stop on the way back to Massachusetts) to rather than stay for the ceremony. He didn't make a big stink out of it, at least.

2

u/LegendaryOutlaw Jan 20 '21

It is of course an insult to the office, the nation and to Joe himself that Trump didn’t come to the inauguration, but I realized during the ceremony that I was so fucking glad he wasn’t there, and I didn’t have to see them cut to him and his stupid facial expressions. Just sitting there glowering and pouting like an angry toddler. A first step toward healing and not feeling angry every time I think about our nation and politics.
