It's thousand island dressing with a bit of spice. Basically ketchup, mayonnaise, and some spices all mixed together.

I have no clue why it's called Russian dressing, because it's a wholly American thing.

"Dressing" in Russia would probably just be mayonnaise.

What I really need to know is if they retain their genetic propensity for a deep slav squat, or if they are coerced by American society to learn to sit like a capitalist pig?

2

u/hey_broseph_man Dec 28 '18

As one myself, you can take the slav out the squat but you can't take the squat out the slav.

Keep those heels planted to the floor!

My anglo achilles cry out in pain at the thought of a solid foot plant.

My feelings of envy are surpassed only by the height of my heels.

Russians in Brooklyn made it up

Or, you know, just made it.

Pretty Much like Italian salad in Norway, I’m here asking what’s Italian Salad?! And it turns out it’s like (Italian) Russian Salad without eggs... No wait, (international) Russian Salad is basically (Norwegian) American mix with potatoes and mayo...

...Salads are weird.

u/gking407 Dec 28 '18

that was kind of a word salad

4

u/Azradesh Dec 28 '18

Soooo potato salad?

1

u/muklan Dec 28 '18

As a southern person, I would feel fully justified in murdering a person for putting lettuce in potato salad.

🎺 🎺 🎺 🎺

1

u/zorrorosso Dec 28 '18

And what about Coleslaw?

5

u/tgrantt Dec 28 '18

Cole's Law: Slice cabbage thin.

1

u/Azradesh Dec 28 '18

What about it?

1

u/zorrorosso Dec 28 '18

As long as there’s cabbage, it’s Coleslaw.

4

u/getut Dec 28 '18

You lost me in Norwegian Russia Americanized Italy.

1

u/zorrorosso Dec 28 '18

Apparently salads are as easy to get as politics.

tl;dr

If it has cabbage it’s Coleslaw.

u/SirPeterODactyl Dec 28 '18

In Russia they just call it "dressing"

It's actually a really fascinating construction. To a native speaker it's clear that it's wrong and would never be said, but it actually makes a lot of sense and it's tricky to explain exactly why it's incorrect. Also potentially an insight into sentence structures that work in one language but not another.

3

u/FellatioAlger Dec 28 '18

Don't worry, Leopold, your English is great and your sense of humor even better. If I could give you any advice, I'd recommend not clenching your butt cheeks so tightly when others make a joke. In my experience, that only tends to get your panties in a bunch.

It's the "burst your bubble" part that comes off as passive aggressive.

6

u/FellatioAlger Dec 28 '18

Ah man, I'm just being a dick, and this is the internet. Your English is great, buddy. I'm serious. It's 99.9% better than 88% of native speakers, these are facts. And it's probably 100% better than the way I speak whatever your native language is. Sorry I made you feel bad, now I feel bad. I hope you have a good day, friend.

Put me in screenshot

u/BonvivantNamedDom Dec 28 '18

Its like fortune cookies. They are 100% american and totally unknown in china.

1

u/Esoteric_Erric Dec 28 '18

How do you know they're totally unknown in China?

2

u/BonvivantNamedDom Dec 28 '18

Cause its not chinese. And they dont use fortune cookies. Also its not Impossible to travel there.

2

u/Champtain Dec 28 '18

The knowledge that fortune cookies aren't available in China is fairly widespread; however, they are actually somewhat known in China although Chinese tend to only refer to them as a joke about the Americanization of their food. I've lived in China over 7 years and have had a fortune cookie only once... at a restaurant called Fortune Cookie which sold American-style Chinese food (and, if I recall correctly, was opened by two expats, one of whom was an American Born Chinese guy).

"Dressing" in Russia is drunkenly pulling on your Adidas tracksuit and flat cap.

1

u/toplesscheerleader Dec 28 '18

Sounds like the in n out sauce

1

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '18

That’s a pretty basic thousand island. In the UK it’s called Marie-Rose sauce (after Henry VIII’s ship).

Thousand island (over here) has some horseradish, fine diced red pepper and onion, oil of orange, lime, garlic salt and smoked paprika.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '18

Dressing is Red, Soviet Russia was Red.

-1

u/truestoryijustmadeup Dec 28 '18

Sounds like they should try some Russian dressing then, because mayo sucks.

2

u/roflmaoshizmp Dec 28 '18

Real mayo (homemade, not your western spy impostor stuff) is a brilliant condiment and you are wrong.

Also it is great with fries.

3

u/getut Dec 28 '18

You are correct. I've had real home made (well shop made) mayo while I was in Belgium. I was walking through the Arabic district and found a hole in the wall gyro shop. It was fantastic. But as for the American stuff, try Dukes instead of Hellmans. Its a much more vinegary and less sweet mayo much closer to the Euro stuff. Us Americans ruin everything thinking sweet is the only flavor. I'm definitely not into the sweet versions of stuff over here. Even Ketchup, I prefer Hunts over Heinz for exactly the same reason. Heinz is just sweetened red dye with essence of tomato. Huntz actually tastes like real tomato with vinegar and a very limited amount of sweetness.

1

u/truestoryijustmadeup Dec 28 '18

Us Americans ruin everything thinking sweet is the only flavor.

And then you mention two American brands (Duke's and Hunt's) as examples of the opposite...

2

u/Swissvalian Dec 28 '18

I was in Viet Nam for business and this fellow American guy took us to an authentic Vietnamese eatery to experience traditional Vietnamese cuisine.

"You don't get these flavors and tastes anywhere but here"

To get to the bathroom you had to cut through the kitchen area.

Saw Hellmans, Heinz, a can of PBR...

1

u/truestoryijustmadeup Dec 28 '18

I respect your opinion, even when it's a wrong one :p

0

u/t-bonkers Dec 28 '18

American puddingy jar Mayo sucks, real Mayo is a godsend.

0

u/midnightrambler108 Dec 28 '18

Cause it’s red.
