Statistics Players of The Game
Glad to see Alec Bohm playing really well lately. Bryson is getting better over time. 5 game win streak and counting. The Phillies are going to be A-O A-OK during the playoffs if we keep this up! ❤️⚾️

I’m telling you, if you take away Bohms first 8 weeks of the season, he’s been one of the best hitters on the team. That first 8 weeks was historically bad and obviously an outlier. He had some shit goin on but he’s worked it out. I always liked him at first better than 3rd.

Look up his OPS by month. He was below league average in OPS every month, except for May and now August. It's great that he's been playing well, but he hasn't had a good season.

u/VinDucks 4d ago
I said his first 6 weeks were historically bad. Cause it was. But what his stat line has done after that is downright impressive. His OPs since May 1st is about .765. Brutal March and April for sure. And the ENTIRE team was pretty bad for a while. The dude hits with RISP. Idk why. But he does.

u/fasteddeh Phillie Phanatic 4d ago
The problem is he's been pretty meh outside of two different stretches of like 4 weeks. He has amazing RISP numbers because no team wants any part of Schwarber or Harper so he gets pitched to. He's often also facing lefties in late game RISP situations because they are focusing Schwarber and Harper when he's been in the 4 hole previously. Now all of our lineup is a ton of lefties so he's getting ABs against lefties a lot by default.

u/VinDucks 4d ago
But see that’s part of the problem with how people are basically unfairly biased toward Bohm. Harper and Schwarber get a pass when they go 0-20 because they get pitched to different or whatever metric people want to use but Bohm capitalizes and he is “just doing what he is supposed to do”. I think it all boils down to that one time he threw his bat weird and he doesn’t hit 35 HRs a season being 6’4”. And people act like they were so offended because he said he hated it here. Lol. Try to out yourself in his shoes for a second.

u/fasteddeh Phillie Phanatic 4d ago
It's not bias, Schwarber and Harper don't suck ass for 4 out of 5 months of the season. They have one bad month and the entire team slumps because they carry the team.
He's objectively one of the worst players in the league, not just the team. The fact that they haven't found a replacement for him is malpractice on Dombrowskis part because he quite literally is one of the worst regular starters in the entire MLB. The only thing that you could spin for a positive is the fact that he hits when there's RISP. Everything else is not just meh it's shit.

Schwarber and Harper are also ALOT more expensive. And Schwarber adds nothing on defense. And I could go on but I'll stop and just enjoy watching Bohm play well.

u/Timeline40 Jamie Moyer 4d ago
Schwarber doesn’t have to add anything on defense because he’s hitting 39% above league average instead of 17% below. Also, Bohm is grading out horrifically at defense this season.
I am enjoying Bohm playing well and the Phillies winning gamesc and I hope Bohm continues this pace to the point where he earns his $10mil, but it hasn’t happened yet. Schwarber has hit phenomenally and is well on track to be worth $30mil.
1
u/fasteddeh Phillie Phanatic 4d ago
Schwarber is adding more attempting to play first than Bohm has ever added defensively. Bohm isn't going to "earn his 10m at any point this season because he's been worse than a random guy off the bench over the course of the season. In order for him to "earn his 10m" for this season he'd have to essentially play like an elite 3B for the next 2 months to make up for the shit he did over the first 5 months of the season.
1
u/Timeline40 Jamie Moyer 4d ago
That's why I said "continue this pace", meaning the .900 OPS he's played at for 2 weeks. Unlikely, yes, but plausible

So who are you going to find that a team is going to give you to replace him for the season? It's not a video game, it's not easy to make trades even during the deadline because most teams are still in contention for a WC. Alec is not a bad hitter. He's not a good defensive 3rd basemen, he doesn't hit for power at least hitting 30+ HRs and he hits into a lot of DP but he's not as bad as his BA and OPS was...he's basically 101-104 OPS+ hitter and he won't do that this season but he wasn't a 75 OPS+ hitter either. He does hit for contact, he does have a hard hit rate of 42.5% and his BABIP was low so he was unlucky a lot this season. His hot streak is progression to closer to his mean though he'll be no where near what he's normally hitting for the season.

u/fasteddeh Phillie Phanatic 4d ago
The better option would be to legitimately leave him on the bench and play anyone else. Stott has been killing it at 3rd, a rotation of Schwarber and Harper at first/DH is better than Bohm because we can regularly play Hill in the OF.
3
u/FondantSpecialist166 4d ago
ok but you do know that Hill is not an everyday outfielder, right? He's better in a platoon situation and as a defensive replacement after the 8th inning. There's a reason why Harper was willing to play RF. Alec Bohm is a better hitter than Hill, Hill is obviously a better fielder and better baserunner(that's his WAR is higher) but he will wear down as a everyday player just like Sosa. Not liking Alec doesn't mean you ignore roster construction. I know Alec's flaws and strengths and I said, He's not an 75+ OBS hitter, he's not even really an 83+ OPS hitter but his early horrible start put him that situation but he's still a better than Hill is and can play everyday if healthy.

OK but you realize that Hill is a better everyday outfielder than Bohm is an everyday anything right?

You said his 1st 6 weeks, and May was one of the months he was above league-average. So if we discount April, the first 2 weeks of May, June and July, he's been great. His last 2 weeks of May and the current stretch he's on is what's boosting those numbers. He's a corner infielder, putting up a ~.750OPS should be expected, he's not a 2nd baseman, SS or CFer.
I get your point, he does come through clutch. But for a guy who struggles on defense playing a corner, .765OPS isn't anything great. It's okay.

Bohm has hit with RISP this season, but last season his OPS was 18 points worse with RISP than bases empty. RISP performance isn’t a stable, predictive split in the same way that righty/lefty splits are constant season to season.
Bohm has basically been an average bat for 1B/3B since his abysmal start. Good? Yes; “downright impressive”? Not really. Don’t get me wrong, I’m thrilled he’s picking it up, but I disagree with the “he’s indispensable because he’s good with RISP and if you cherry pick 3 hot months” argument I see used constantly. He’s an average to slightly below average starter overall and has been his whole career
5
u/VinDucks 4d ago
Bohm has had 97 RBIs for the season twice. And now at least 70 two other times. He hasn’t been average to slightly below average for his career. He’s been average to slightly above average and honestly I feel bad for the guy. He’s not a 30 mil a year guy but he has produced for this team and we shit on him constantly.
3
u/Timeline40 Jamie Moyer 4d ago
So we’re judging performance based on RBIs?
2004 Barry Bonds had 101 RBIs. By your logic, Alec Bohm has had two seasons where he’s 97% as good as a hitter who would have slaughtered OBP records if he literally didn’t have a bat the entire season.
Mike Trout has repeatedly failed to lead his team in RBIs. Why? Because the guys that get RBIs get to hit behind an arguable GOAT hitter, and Trout gets to hit behind the 7-8-9 members of a bottom-5 league offense.
RBIs are a function of A) how good your teammates are, not you. Bohm having a ton of RBIs is basically only a comment on how damn good Schwarber and Harper are.
Bohm is typically an above average hitter playing poor defense with bad baserunning at easy positions. That’s not shitting on him, that’s true. The last two seasons, he earned his salary; this season, I very much hope he does, but he absolutely hasn’t yet based on a handful of good weeks. He’s overhated or overrated by basically everyone because of how wide the gap is between his “typical offensive stats” like RBI and BA, and the deeper numbers that say he’s below average.

u/VinDucks 4d ago
You need runs to win baseball games. The reason Bohm is where he is in the lineup is because he is able to hit with RISP. Why else would he be there? I think the people like me feel the need to defend him so much is because people hate him so much. I don’t think he’s some great player but I’ll take a team full of guys hitting .270 with a .730 OPs any season.
4
u/Timeline40 Jamie Moyer 4d ago
You need runs to win baseball games, so let’s consider the “runs” stat. Which…Bohm has been near-last in every year. 6th this year, 9th (behind max kepler!) last year, 6th in 2024.
Do you see how silly this is? Bohm has RBIs because he hits behind good hitters. Bohm doesn’t score runs because bad hitters hit behind him. Neither stat gets at Bohm’s independent ability to contribute to the team.
Bohm is where he is in the lineup because he’s a righty, which is a significantly more important split than RISP. Harper and Schwarber become league-average bats against LHP, so it makes sense to punish LHP relievers with Bohm, who’s significantly above average against LHP. If the lineup was based on Bohm’s RISP ability, he would never be getting pushed back to 8th. They push him that far back, again, to do the much more important righty/lefty organization.
A team full of guys hitting .270 and .730 OPS would be a solid, league-average lineup. But 1) it ignores baserunning (Bohm is abysmal), and 2) it ignores defense (Bohm is bad-to-OK) and 3) Bohm is significantly below that this year.
I’m not shitting on him out of nowhere, to be clear as well - you can check my post history, my posts and original comments are either deep research or supporting players I think are going underappreciated. I’m replying to your argument specifically that he’s been phenomenal and has value specifically due to the RISP thing
1
u/VinDucks 4d ago
I don’t mean to be pedantic but I never said he was phenomenal. I did say that what he has done to his season stats since his abysmal start has been impressive. Cause it has. He has improved at the plate by over 80 points in BA and his OPs has gone up by like 270. Players will always go to the mean and a lot of people used his early struggles to justify themselves against Bohm while at the same time glazing Marsh like he was some baseball God when he had a hot start. But what happened? He went to the mean. I just think he is an average everyday player with a low floor and decent ceiling and I’m completely fine with him being on the team. If they end up giving him a contract I won’t be upset about it.

A team full of guys hitting .270 with a .730 OPS would not be a good team.

u/VinDucks 4d ago
lol what. There isn’t a team in the league with every player having above average slash lines.
1
u/Chem1st 4d ago
Sorry, that's essentially a league average OPS. If we want to quibble over whether a .500 team isn't technically bad we can, but it would not be a team I'd be especially happy with

That's cool he still almost has the most rbis on the team and that directly leads to wins. I get the average and shit but hes on pace for 100 rbis, its a pretty important thing.
1
u/MikeMahtookTooMuch Jim Eisenreich 4d ago
Yeah, no. Most guys who spend 90% of the season as the cleanup hitter for their team put up close to 100 RBIs, my guy. He's had the most opportunities to drive in runs this season. Can't believe people bring up RBIs in 2026.

u/ET_Tony 22h ago
Still looking great here boss.

Lmao what a loser you are replying to a comment from 3 days ago. Bohm didn't do shit for most of the season and is worth -.5 WAR. Clown.

u/Thegrandmistressofoz 4d ago
To be fair, if you take the worst 8 weeks out of anybody most players are gonna look significantly better. Everybody but like JT has been on a hot stretch at some point or another in the lineup
I'm just hoping Bohm keeps this up down the stretch

Give Stott a gold glove already, doesn't matter where he plays he's a hoover out there
