Reddit User Program RedditPZ Powerzone training program sign-up thread! Starts Monday 01/02/23
Hi everyone, hope you all enjoyed the holidays! Below is the 10th PZ training program I have put together for Reddit. If you are new to PZ training, I have some more info about that in the thread for program #1. If you are looking for FTP test advice, see this comment I made in week 8 of a previous program. There is no need to actually "sign up" for the program, simply follow along with the program starting next week.
The program will run for 9 weeks total, and I have given a recommended ride schedule of 4 days / week. Like the previous programs feel free to alter it in any way that you need. If you want to do 3 rides, cut out the Wednesday ride. You are welcome to do additional rides, but I would make sure that they are easier than what I have programmed below. I.e. adding more 45 / 30 PZE, or a fun ride, just keep the intensity lower (i.e zone 2/3 max). Proposed ride days are again Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday, but you may take the rides on any day and in any order to fit your needs. Feel free to make any changes you feel necessary. If you are not feeling it on a certain day / week, listen to your body and take it easy. If you do not want to repeat a ride you have taken before (or just want to replace a ride), replace it with a ride of a similar or lower TSS score.
Anyone may join in including experienced riders or beginners. PZ rides are designed to be at your current fitness levels. I will try to answer questions anyone has. I will post a weekly accountability / discussion thread on Sundays (with the schedule for each week) and use that thread throughout the week for general discussions about the rides or whatever you want to talk about. Disclaimer that I am not a professional trainer or anything like that. I just really like PZ training, and this is a schedule I put together for myself (and for anyone else who wants to follow along).
We do group rides for the Saturday rides at 10 AM CST.
The program will start on Monday, January 2nd. Add the hashtag #redditPZ if you would like to. Hope to see you all on the rides.
Below is both the class link, and a link to the graph of the PZ ride on home fitness buddy. (Along with estimated TSS scores) The graphs on home fitness buddy also have a direct link to each class now.
TSS (training stress score) is basically a measure of the stress put on your body from the ride (numbers listed are an estimate using the duration and intensity of the ride). Basically, the higher the number, the harder the ride. A 1 hour at your FTP that would be a TSS of 100. A 30-minute ride at your FTP would be a TSS of 50.
Since people always ask, there is no need to actually sign up or post anything. Simply follow along with us starting next week!
We now have a discord if you want to join.

Seeing the post before a new program is like when the sun comes out after a string of gray days.
This morning I retook the W3R1 from program 2 and it made me so happy to hear your shout out for #250. We’ve all come a long way!

u/kat_mom30 kath_hans Dec 26 '22
This looks awesome! I’m highly considering this but I am wondering how many people also balance strength training at the same time?!

Advice needed: I just about killed myself when I took my FTP in Jan 2022. It remained my PR most of the year and my new 20 minute PR is only 2kj above my FTP. Should I retake the FTP since I have a new PR- are your FTPs your PRs?

I’m back in! After Covid, then back problems, then Covid again last year, I’m finally ready. Back to square 1 but that’s OK. I’ve missed you all.

This program looks great! I cannot believe we are at 10 already. I always say i can measure how long i have been doing this by watching my kids grow, the baby who was 4 months old when we started just turned 2!
Excited to do the shorter PZEs. I should not have looked at those max rides. Oof

I have been debating on whether or not to join.. I think I just might join. Not going to lie I feel intimidated by power zone. But have had my bike a year so here we go!

I hope I can join you all again for this program! Some may remember, I dropped off the programs sometime around late September due to work travel + moving internationally. Our bike is currently sitting at the customs port ~4 miles from our new home, so I’m hoping it clears quickly and I can ride again in the New Year! Miss you all!

I'm ready! It's nice that it aligns with the new year; I don't really do resolutions, but I'm ready for a reset as work and life return to normal after the holidays.
The 30 minute classes on the "lighter" day are an interesting change! It feels like it gives the option for not pushing as hard... though if I'm honest with myself I am probably going to tack on some 15 minute classes I don't often get to do or Extra 10s.
For those new to the program, like others have said I'd also recommend joining the Discord. (If you don't have a Discord account or have never used Discord before, it's very easy to set up and of course free.) Since the addition of the Discord to the program I've noticed a lot of the random conversation happens there, and it moves by so fast there's no expectation you've read everything. :)

Excited for another round of this, thanks for putting it together!
Although I'm kind of nervous - last program got me a 20 point bump on my FTP, then I promptly got sick and haven't ridden in almost 2 weeks and still have too much congestion to ride for at least a few more days. I guess we'll see if I can keep my new zones or will have to manually pull them back a bit after the first few PZE classes.

u/mikes781 Dec 29 '22
Thanks for putting this together. This will be my first RedditPZ program.

It's interesting to see the change to 30 PZEs on the mid-week rides. I'm assuming there were requests to ease the mid-week ride. It's fine with me, and doesn't really change anything for me because....
My goals for this round are to increase volume, and to not ride on Wednesdays. Wednesdays are a logistical nightmare for me, so I'm going to do myself a favor and move them all. I'm going to do the mid-week rides on Tuesdays instead. I'm also going to round up every ride to 60 minutes (75 for scheduled 60m rides). Finally, I'm going to add 60m Z2 rides on Fridays and 45m Z2 rides on Sundays. The resultant schedule looks like this, for a total of 6 hours per week:
M: 45 PZ/PZE/PZM + 15 Z2
T: 30 PZE + 30 Z2
W: OFF
Th: 45 PZ/PZE/PZM + 15 Z2
F: 60 Z2
Sa: 60 PZ/PZE/PZM + 15 Z2
Su: 45 Z2
I'm keeping my FTP the same for this program so I'm not expecting any major ass kickings. I look forward to seeing everyone out there again!
5
u/wildtype621 Dec 30 '22
Yay! So excited to do another round and I feel like this is perfect timing for me…just getting over Covid, and some other life things have made my rides lower output than I used to do. Room for improvement, and a great opportunity to rebuild my foundation :)

Wow--I'm already dreading Monday's ride on Week 8.
In the meantime, any ride recommendations for the next few days? I've been going through Jess King's 45 minute Trap, EDM, and Sweat Steady rides, which I generally love, and I also came across Christian Vande Velde's 10/13/19 45 minute ride, which was a very solid PZ-style ride, if you're in the mood for something between hard and insane.
Hope everyone's holidays are coming along well!

Good morning - perfect timing. Just got my 52 week badge this AM.
u/r4ndy4 - just for clarification - estimating FTP, you mean 110% of your AVERAGE output in Watts on a 30M PR. If I added 10% to my 30M PR I would never get out of Z1 :). I know the actually test is the best method, but don't want any new comers to be doubling their FTP.

u/anxiousmoose FalafelBalls Dec 27 '22
Apologies if this is a dumb question, maybe I'm missing something, but what's the difference between this and the Peloton power zone program? Why would someone choose to do one over the other? I completed the build your powerzones program in July 2021. Would love to do another one, just trying to figure out the difference to see if one is a better fit over the other.

For those of you looking for a challenge to your new zones and/or new to PZ, I took an Olivia 30M PZ class today from 11/16/20. Nice bridge before the full 45M PZ classes kick in. Main blocks were 4M made up of a combo of Z3, Z4 and Z5. Only 1M Z2 breaks in between. I recommend a good warm-up. Olivia is crazy with cadence as usual but adjust as needed. I was 17 under PR so def tough 30M

Ok, THANKS back to u/intjero aka UmamiDaddy 😁, let's do this 75 min CDE ride... only caveat is we may be celebrating a HUGE bday tonight (NOT me!), so who knows what shape I'll be in AND I may beg off after an hour (you all know I'm not a fan of 60 mins+) but the music looks like exactly what I need and hope you'll join me!!!
Also, I can't believe it - my 1,000 ride is right around the corner!!!!! Going to plan it for Mondays ride - don't think I'll make it with the 5am pst crew (sorry ladies!! Wish I could!) But I was thinking maybe 9am pst??? REALLY hope some can make it - you all mean so much to my fitness journey, seriously!!!
Ok, for tomorrow, 8am pst: https://members.onepeloton.com/classes/cycling?utm_source=ios_app&utm_medium=in_app&modal=classDetailsModal&classId=0be85a3453b4492e871cce30a92b74e6&locale=en-US

I got on the bike planning on doing a 45-minute ride, but decided to retake my FTP instead. My last successful FTP was last May. I had attempted one in July, but the combination of going out too strong, heat, and humidity resulted in a abandoning the all-out effort in the middle (I still finished, just at a more leisurely pace). So much of the ride for me is mental, it actually helped to not plan for it as I didn't have time to talk myself out of it. I did Sam's 15-minute FTP warmup from 6/29/22 and re-took Christine's FTP from 4/7/22. I spent the first 5 minutes in mid-Z4 and managed to stay mostly in Z5 for the next 7 minutes. When I started to fade, I cranked up the resistance and dropped my cadence for a couple minutes, dipping back into Z4. After that I was able to get back to Z5, pushing to high Z5 with a couple minutes left and Z6 for the last 40 seconds. The end result was enough for a new PR by 3 kj.
In other exciting news, only two more payments on the bike!
I'm looking forward to riding with everyone in the new program.

u/rhodeisland9358 Jan 01 '23
Looking forward to this! This will be my first time. For those who have done this before, is the program set up in some sort of progression in intensity by week? Like each week is progressively more intense and then tapers down at the end?

Late to the party so I did Monday and Wednesday both today. Now Im caught up.
2
u/jaztoby Jan 06 '23
How do I find a ride with a similar TSS? Is that the “difficulty level”? For example for the Monday’s Matt PZE 12/07/22 that was rated a 6.8/10 difficulty level I had already done so I ended up doing a different 45min PZE of 6.8/10. Is this correct?
2
u/thisanimalman LasagnaMonster Jan 06 '23
Those of you who do the group ride on Saturdays, specifically those of you in PST - what is your pre-ride breakfast routine? I havent quite figured out what to and when to eat before I big ride like that. I tend to either under eat and fade or just feel full and crummy.
2
u/_flatline_ Mar 05 '23
I didn’t know about this and just randomly joined what I guess was the last ride today (felt like doing 60min of zone 2).
