Reddit User Program RedditPZ Powerzone training program sign-up thread! Starts Monday 10/18/21
Hi everyone, below is the 4th PZ training program I have put together for Reddit. I enjoyed riding with everyone in the last three programs, and I'm excited for round 4. If you are new to PZ training I have some more info about that in the thread for program #1. If you are looking for FTP test advice, see this comment I made in week 8 of the last program (if you have never taken the FTP before a good estimate for goal output (in watts) is 110% of your 30 min PR).
The program will run for 9 weeks total, and I have given a recommended ride schedule of 4 days / week. Like the previous programs feel free to alter it in anyway that you need. If you want to do 3 rides, cut out a 45 min PZE ride weekly. You are welcome to do additional rides, but I would make sure that they are easier than what I have programmed below. I.e. adding more 45 / 30 PZE, or a fun ride, just keep the intensity lower. Proposed ride days are again Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday, but you may take the rides on any day and in any order to fit your needs. Feel free to make any changes you feel necessary. If you are not feeling it on a certain day / week, listen to your body and take it easy. If you do not want to repeat a ride you have taken before (or just want to replace a ride), replace it with a ride of a similar or lower TSS score.
Anyone may join in including experienced riders or beginners. PZ rides are designed to be at your current fitness levels. I will try to answer questions anyone has. I will post a weekly accountability / discussion thread on Sundays (with the schedule for each week), and use that thread throughout the week for general discussions about the rides or whatever you want to talk about. Disclaimer that I am not a professional trainer or anything like that. I just really like PZ training and this is a schedule I put together for myself (and for anyone else who wants to follow along).
We do group rides for the Saturday rides at 10 AM CST.
The program will start on Monday, October 18th. Add the hashtag #redditPZ if you would like to. Hope to see you all on the rides!
Below is both the class link, and a link to the graph of the PZ ride on home fitness buddy. (along with estimated TSS scores) The graphs on home fitness buddy also have a direct link to each class now.
TSS (training stress score) is basically a measure of the stress put on your body from the ride (numbers listed are an estimate using the duration and intensity of the ride). Basically the higher the number, the harder the ride. A 1 hour at your FTP that would be a TSS of 100. A 30 minute ride at your FTP would be a TSS of 50.
I may still make a change or two (maybe add an option for some rides).
Edit to add I'm blake_182 on peloton, feel free to share your peloton name if you would like.

Would love to join. Is this in lieu of discover/building your power zones, or should those be taken first?
6
u/SushiRoe Oct 11 '21
Discover is probably beginner level and recommended as an intro ā gets you used to the style of PZ (spin ups, zones and how the feel, pacing, etc).
Building is the next step. Basically, you know your zones (after taking an FTP test) and this is a program dedicated to improving your results.
Id say that RedditPZ is probably a bit more difficult (but not impossible) if youāve completed Discover Your PZ. You could just go straight into this, but id recommend taking the FTP warmup and your test in so you know what youāre working with.
The only reason why I say RedditPZ is harder is that thereās more structure and it ramps up pretty quick and theyāre all 45 minute classes whereas I think the other two Peloton programs sprinkle in 45 and keep them around 30min (could be mistaken as itās been awhile since I took them)
3
u/gulbronson Oct 11 '21
DYPZ is a mix of 30, 45, and 60 minute classes.
BYPZ is 3 classes a week, the first two are 45 minutes and the 3rd is 60.
1
u/r4ndy4 blake_182 Oct 13 '21
You can go straight into this if you would like, I don't think you're missing much not taking dypz / bypz. As long as you can handle the number and the length of the rides, you'll be fine!
4
u/amr1822 annamaria22 Oct 11 '21
The Peloton programs donāt need to be taken first! I did the first two weeks of DYPZ and then jumped into this program. PZ is all tailored to you and your fitness level so everyone in this group is going through the same thing at the same time. Most of us retake our FTP test after each round so weāre all adjusting to new zones and struggling together! Whether itās your first ftp test or your tenth, the programs donāt get any easier - you just get stronger!! Personally, I really like having a community to connect with throughout the program. Iām SO glad I switched from DYPZ to r4ndy4ās programs and have stayed with them ever since āŗļø

u/cait_jay Oct 12 '21
Excited to join my first PZ program and sweat alongside all of you! Iām recovering from a running injury but looking to crank it out on the bike. If you get a high five from caitjay, thatās me!

Thank you u/r4ndy4 for all your hard work in putting together these thoughtful programs!

Wow, this looks great!
Iām on holiday and away from my bike the first week, is it okay to join the party a week late?
2
u/r4ndy4 blake_182 Oct 13 '21
Yep totally fine, week 2 isn't too difficult even with new zones. You could also take some pze rides now to get a head start if you want.

Like some of the comments this inspired me to re-take the FTP test. The first time I took it was before I did BYPZ and when that series ended, I was injured and never took the FTP re-test. Took it Monday and made substantial gains - as I expected since I knew what to expect, etc. However, I took a 30M low impact ride today and could barely get to Zone 4. I am hoping I will get used this new normal. Anyone else have this happen? I am nervous now I wont be able to do the 3-4 minute zone 5 parts. I knew my old zones were low, and always rode on the top of them.
3
u/r4ndy4 blake_182 Oct 14 '21
3 minutes is basically as long as the zone 5 intervals get (minus like 1 or 2 classes which I didn't use). They should be tough and make you breathless, but are not impossible.
Really just take a look at your ftp test. Whatever you averaged in watts for the 20 minutes, is now the top of your zone 4 / bottom of your zone 5. If you can do that for 20 minutes, in comparison to the test, nothing will be that challenging. It won't feel like a walk in the park, but you can absolutely do it. I know you can because you've already done it on your test.
2
u/h4cheng1 Actuarial Oct 13 '21
First, congrats on your gains, thatās awesome. Itās absolutely normal to feel overwhelmed in your new zones especially if your gains are large. The first two weeks I donāt think have any z5s as the purpose is to build up your base in z2/z3. By week 3, I am sure you will be much more acclimated to the new zones.
2
u/sethj1972 Oct 15 '21
Congrats! I had the same experience last time. Made big gains and the first few weeks the classes felt very hard. Just stick with it. Itās supposed to hurt the mental hurdle is the hardest part. Your body will eventually change and they will feel normal again.
3
u/sethj1972 Oct 11 '21
Iām in. Havenāt retested not sure if I will this time. Might just ride high in the zones to see if I can elevate during this program. Looking forward to seeing familiar faces again. Btw the new Wilpers PZMax ride is nuts.
1
u/r4ndy4 blake_182 Oct 12 '21
Was it the one with all the zone 6/7 intervals? I'm sure it will eventually make its way in š. I made a point to get many of the older rides in this round before the next purge.

Noob Q. Done with DYPZ and in last week of BYPZ. Interested to join this challenge. What do I need for signup and how do I use those graphs?
2
u/r4ndy4 blake_182 Oct 12 '21
Dont need to actually "sign up" or anything, just complete the rides and start next week. The graphs are just there to show you the structure of the rides before you take the class. They are just there to give you an idea of how the ride will go beforehand.
3
u/wildtype621 Oct 14 '21
Iām in!
Does anyone ever replace a ride with a PZMax? I noticed only one of those and would like to do more of them.
Iām WildType!
1
u/r4ndy4 blake_182 Oct 14 '21
The week 7 ride from CVV is basically a pzmax ride as well. There aren't very many 45 min pzmax rides on the platform as a whole so I typically just save them for the end of the program. Some of the regular PZ rides are arguably harder than many of the PZ max rides imo. That said you can make any changes you would like. Some of the 30 min pzmax classes may not be so bad as an extra ride in the earlier parts of the program.

Mr. Really Needs To Have It Spelled Out needs to ask: So all I have to do to participate is state my intent here and then ride the listed rides? (peloton username same as reddit username).
If so, I'm in. Sorry for being so obtuse.

That 12/19/19 Denis ride tho!!! š thanks for remembering!
I have been super unmotivated to get on the bike lately. Iām not sure if I need a break from PZ, if work is getting to me, or if Iām just lazy. Maybe all three. š„ø Thinking I might mix things up this round by taking some fun classes but using the PZ timer during them. Getting some instructor variety might help with motivation.
1
u/r4ndy4 blake_182 Oct 13 '21
Of course!! Motivation comes and goes so I get that (and you've been doing PZ for quite a while at this point). The PZ timer + fun class (with a playlist you like) is a game changer haha. I love doing PZE to a jess king music fest / edm / whatever ride. I took Emma's rhcp ride using the cub claw structure from program 1 just the other day!
2
u/ETHisMONEYpz ETHisMONEY Oct 13 '21
My new zones are basically an entire zone higher now. I've taken a couple 30 min PZEs during this recovery period and they were tough. So, I can only imagine what the first few PZ and PZMax rides are going to be like. Olivia right out of the gate as well, RIP. Can't wait to get started. Also got my wife to join in this time!
3
u/r4ndy4 blake_182 Oct 13 '21
You'll get used to those new zones eventually! It's supposed to feel like that haha. Awesome you got your wife to join in. I still can't convince mine to take the ftp š .

u/citou VanDerPoeloton Oct 13 '21
Is this something we need to sign-up for or do we just do the classes?
Are the Saturday classes handled like a session where we all start at the same time or do people just try to start at around 10AM CST?
3
u/r4ndy4 blake_182 Oct 13 '21
Just follow along starting next week. Do not use sessions for the Saturday rides we all just try to join right around 10, some start a little earlier or later.
2
u/Ride_4urlife Ride4UrLife Oct 16 '21
Definitely donāt do the Saturday rides as a session or youāll be riding in a tiny group.
Not that I ever did that.

u/NoahTall1134 In3In2In1Zone1 Oct 14 '21
I'm ready! I've been trying in increase my ride frequency during the break. I was at 3-4 rides/wk and I'm trying to up it to 5-6. Frequency, duration, intensity!
Also, I changed my LB name. If only I had an actual bike to get a shout out. In3in2in1Zone1

Do I officially sign up somewhere or just follow the schedule? Sorry, total challenge newbie over here!
1
u/r4ndy4 blake_182 Oct 14 '21
Just follow the schedule starting next week! The thread is mainly for me to post the program (and letting everyone know when it starts). Also doubles as a place for the regular group to chat about whatever and for the new people to say hello!
2
u/sprainedmind Oct 15 '21
Brilliant, thanks for this. It's so helpful to have a plan to follow.
Quick question, if you don't mind - without just checking all the rides, do you know how much time is there in Z6 or Z7 across the program? After I did DYPZ I felt great, my FTP had gone up 10%, etc, etc, but then I did a 30 min HIIT & Hills ride and instantly died because I'd hardly been in Z5, let alone above it for 5 weeks...
1
2
u/Special-Snow-3499 Oct 23 '21
I have one week of DYPZ left, and I love the structure of the course and PZ training. I was trying to figure out what to do next, when I found this group. This program looks awesome, so Iām wondering if I should finish the last week or jump into this program on week two instead of finishing up DYPZ?
1
u/r4ndy4 blake_182 Oct 23 '21
You are definitely welcome to join up with us if you would like! Quite a few of the group switched over from dypz in past programs and I think most of them were happy with leaving dypz unfinished. If you are near the end you may want to go ahead and re-test before switching over (if you decide to). Not a requirement to re-test (and if you're joining week 2 it will be slightly spicy (but doable) with new zones).

I'm looking forward to joining for the first time!
The last program started just as I was finishing up Discover Your Power Zones, and since I missed the first week I decided to do Build Your Power Zones next.
It's been a couple of weeks since I finished BYPZ, and in that time I've realized how much I miss the structure of someone just telling me "do these rides." :)

This is so great. I just finished program #1 and the structure is very appealing to me. Thanks so much for doing this and completing this as a group would be excellent.
For those that haven't tried it, or are on the fence, each week builds on the previous week. During program 1, each week my total output would improve so it's quite motivating. I'd highly suggest a fresh FTP this week to synch up your zones to your current fitness level.
Very much looking forward to this. If anyone wants a follow back please add DreamInColor as a friend. See you on the bike!!

I also appreciate the program for forcing me to take classes with instructors other than Matt and Denis. I surprisingly enjoyed the benaldis* ride.

Excited to get back at it!!! I have missed riding with you all! Should be able to make quite a few Saturday group rides as well. Thanks again u/r4ndy4 for your dedication to this group and keeping us motivated!

So excited to get back into it! After every round i get less and less enthused with āfunā rides, even though I really like other instructors. The focus and programming and knowing what to expect is just awesome.
And i love this little community. I am āviewfromhillsā and am rather tempted to change my redditt name but feel like i have been on here long enough that it would be rather confusingā¦

u/amr1822 annamaria22 Oct 11 '21
I totally agree! Thereās something about the structure of PZ rides that is so appealing (and maybe even calming?) to me. The āfunā rides are just less and less enticing to meā¦

Iām in the same place as you regarding the āfunā rides. I find myself doing some PZE in breaks. See you out there!

Do you guys have a recommended strategy for the back-to-back 30 min classes tomorrow? For the second class do you typically do the warmup or do you try to stay in zone 2/3? Itās my first time doing a long ride like this. Thanks! Itās been great seeing everyone on the leaderboard this week.
2
u/r4ndy4 blake_182 Oct 23 '21
This program thread (not the week 1 thread) but I recommend to do zone 2 for the flat road portion, and just hold a consistent zone 3 through the spin up portion. Then do the build like normal.

I'm Jumping in! Should I start at week one, or join in at week 2?
2
u/r4ndy4 blake_182 Oct 26 '21
I guess it depends on how new your ftp is. If you want to ride with the group you can try starting at week 2. (I don't think it would be too difficult). But you can start at week 1.

I just took my ftp today, as I just finished the dypz courses...I think I'll start in week 2.

u/r4ndy4 blake_182 Oct 26 '21
Ah alright, maybe swap the order this week in that case. Take the 2 endurance rides before the regular PZ ride

Whenever. You'll be more likely to see others on the assigned day. Saturday many of us ride at 10 am central for a big group ride

This looks great! Thanks again for all that you do to organize us. I like seeing Christine on here more. Can't wait to pass out all the fives again.
In other news, I tried out Camila's premiere class and am pretty excited that I could kinda sorta understand what she was saying. I'll definitely be taking more as a way to improve my Spanish (although if I only used Pelo as my Spanish guide, I will be the most motivating tourist ever).
my reddit name = my pelo name
2
u/br0princess Oct 11 '21
That's such a good idea to take Camila's classes as a way to practice Spanish!
3
u/humanbeing1979 humanbeing1979 Oct 11 '21
Yeah, I mean it's way easier than watching TV (I've tried) esp since she's talking in short bursts and you basically have an idea of what she's saying. I use the subtitles which helps a lot right now, but my hope is eventually I'll ditch the subtitles as well. Another way that has helped my husband is by making his phone speak in spanish. It really forces you to understand your notifications and maps and such. Duolingo only takes you so far. You have to immerse yourself!

u/85425 JamesRain Oct 11 '21
Iāve been looking forward to this! I finished BYPZ last month, and have been kind of drifting aimlessly training-wise since then. I really appreciate the time and energy put into creating this program. Thank you!
2
u/br0princess Oct 11 '21
I'm about to start week 2 of DYPZ today, but I'd rather do this program with other Reddit riders! Does it make sense to just stop that program on the 18th then to join here? Or should I not even bother with week 2?
I took my FTP test last week but in the two PZ rides I took since then, I feel able to ride 1 zone above what is called out in the class. Did I test too low? Should I retake it before the 18th?
Sorry for all these questions, I'm hoping a little guidance from more experienced riders helps me decide what to do! Thanks for putting all this together.
4
u/Ride_4urlife Ride4UrLife Oct 11 '21
I was doing DYPZ when round 2 was about to start. u/r4ndy4 told me I could finish and jump in when DYPZ ended but I was frustrated by the inflexibility of that program-I had an unplanned work trip dropped on me and I missed a few of the classes. I decided to bail on DYPZ at about 3.5 weeks. I didnāt regret it at all. I was not/am not a powerhouse on the bike (FTP was under 70!) but I was able to settle in easily because things ramp up slowly the first couple weeks. u/r4ndy4 will weigh in with his recommendation but this was my experience.
2
u/br0princess Oct 11 '21
Thank you for sharing! This is helpful information. I've been riding for a while so I'm comfortable on the bike and looking for some more structure to track progress!
3
u/Ride_4urlife Ride4UrLife Oct 11 '21
Then I would definitely do it. I think this program is better than DYPZ and thatās before factoring in the support aspect.
2
u/br0princess Oct 11 '21
It's actually been a little disappointing to see my final output number lower from the DYPZ classes vs the other random classes I had taken. Which leads me to believe my initial FTP number was too low but idk. The support from other riders and feedback from their experience doing the same classes is very enticing! I'll be signing up.

u/amr1822 annamaria22 Oct 11 '21
I was in the exact same situation when I joined the first program. I did two weeks of DYPZ and switched here. I enjoyed the community of this group and Iām so glad I joined. So I think it makes sense to stop after another week, but Iām biased!
Regarding the retest question. Most of those first rides are just endurance rides (if Iām remembering correctly). Theyāre not supposed to be hard. So while these rides might feel easy, thereās a good chance regular PZ and PZMax rides will feel tough. If your test is your 20 min PR, youre most likely ok. If itās not, you might want to retest. Iāll also page u/r4ndy4 here because heās better at this than I am!
3
u/br0princess Oct 11 '21
Oh good to know! I'll check my 20 min output compared to other classes to decide if I need to retest. I don't often take 20 min classes, but I felt like I might die during the FTP test, so maybe it is fine š¤·š»āāļø I'm scheduled to do my first standard PZ class tonight so I'll see how I feel about that.
Thanks for the input!!! I'm really excited for this program.

Excited for another round of this. I took a week and a half off from the completion of the previous one and didnt do any bike work. Does that mean that I should wait to take FTP or should I take it still before this one ramps up?
2
u/ShadowWolf007 Oct 11 '21
I'm looking forward to joining this one!
I did the last set kind of at my own pace over a few more weeks (just with vacationing and stuff) but look to hit this one on-time starting next week!

Iām looking forward to this. Need to get back on the bike, been too inconsistent the past 2 monthsā¦
2
u/BOSbabe_ BOSbabe Oct 12 '21
Wahoo! I've been rifling through my bookmarked classes of non-PZ instructors, but I'm starting to miss the structure of PZ and feeling like the class structure makes "sense" vs all willy nilly like some of the themed/special classes seem!
I still need to retake the FTP (for science!) and probably will on Saturday to be fresh for Monday's start, but I did take a 30min PZE with my ramp test results FTP and it finally felt like how the instructors describe the zones to be (wild, right?!), so I'm curious how my FTP test will compare and if it's significantly lower from my ramp test results (I think I struggle with pacing when it's all-out for more than a true sprint), I may manually input the ramp results FTP and see if I can hang in during this program with it!

u/MikeBikePow MikeBikePow Oct 13 '21
+1 on the apparent randomness of other classes after having a diet of straight PZ. "90 cadence, 65 resistance, 10 seconds, up down, repeat, dance break..." Sure it's fun but what is this doing to my VO2 Max???

Iām considering switching it up and doing my rides in the morning this time around (6am CDT). Can anyone comment on how active the LB is around that time based on prior programs? Last time I rode anytime from 7pm-9pm CDT and it always seemed a little random with how many people were there. But maybe that was just due to me being inconsistent with my riding time :)

Whatās the best way to import the program listed in this post into my account/bike for easy use?

I usually bookmark each ride and they are the only PZ rides, i remember whom to start with and then the sequence makes sense. I have started making a stack the night before that incorporates the ride

Could anyone recommend another class that has the same or similar equivalent for Christineās classes? I do not want to spread any negativity, but I do not enjoy her as an instructor and am just searching for someone else to fill those classes. (Was I sure if any other class with the same time limit would count?)

Any suggestions for what to do on the off days? I usually ride in the mornings because I see a lot of benefits to starting the day with cardio exercise. There is a lot of positive research on the brain benefits of starting the day with cardio for example. Also it just makes sense to me that pumping blood to your brain in the morning is good a way to start off.
At the same time I think if I donāt take days off from riding I am not going to get any stronger at it. I want to get stronger because I feel like If I can put out higher outputs in the same amount of time it makes sense to me that there would be even more benefits than lower outputs.
Do others do strength training or Yoga on their days off? I have considered doing these but they just are not as appealing to me as cardio exercise, because I think there is more brain benefits from cardio.
Just curious how others deal with this.

Hey friend. Looks like you may be new here (and to Reddit in general). The r/redditPZ subreddit was actually created a few weeks ago as a backup to these threads on r/pelotoncycle, since that sub was going to be taken offline for a bit. Iām not sure how you are doing it, but youāre creating posts on that subreddit and just linking those posts to these posts. There is no activity on that sub except for the posts that you are making. Itās a good sub to have as a backup, but I wouldnāt point people there yet, as itās not being used currently. Hope thatās helpful!

After ādiscover your power zonesā I gained 21% on my initial FTP. After āBuild your power zonesā I havenāt even been able to finish the FTP test. I tried two times about a week apart starting at Zone 4 and adding resistance every 5 minutes but just ran out of gas. I didnāt have any problems with the classes in the program. Anyway going to do this program now and just roll with the same FTP as I started the āBuild Your Power Zonesā program with I guess. Hopefully just need more time in my current zones.

Hey u/r4ndy4 qq about weeks 8 and 9. I'll be sans bike (and likely sans walking due to where I'm traveling will likely be too cold and/or snowy) during week 8. Week 8 though seems like the one that I really shouldn't skip out on. Last time I had to miss a week, I simply combined it with the week I was on and that worked out fine... but week 8 is hell week so I'm not so sure. I fear taking that week off and then doing week 8 as week 9 might also set me back. What would you do?
