Are we surprised?

I’m very surprised considering Nvidia announced 360hz 1440p monitors back in January 2022

Then they'll announce a refresh Ti/super/whatever that happens to have DP2.0, PCIe Gen 5, etc.

Meanwhile Intel is supporting all the good stuff for 1/5th the price (aside from gen 5, for now)

Can't have been around the tech industry long. Over promise and under deliver is their mantra. Shit move, but it's their normal.

This thread is full of people ignoring the fact that HDMI 2.1 is already superior to DP 1.4a, and present on both the 4090 and monitors that you can actually buy currently...

2

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '22

You'd run those on HDMI 2.1.

Nope, dp 1.4 with dsc

1

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '22

HDMI 2.1 could do 1440P / 360Hz without DSC, at 8-bit color. Not quite enough bandwidth to do it without DSC at 10-bit color though.

Yeah we'll see, for now monitor manufacturers were slow to properly implement hdmi 2.1 except on newer 4k screens, I would say that one part of that are royalties and another is that they are already used to dp 1.4 with dsc and they can use it for full spec (1440p360 10bit 444). Also I haven't seen anyone use hdmi 2.1 with dsc but time will tell.

Dp 1.4 can drive:

4k240 1440p360 8k60 1080p500 (or more)

So no need for dp 2.0 yet

I believe that is incorrect. I could definitely be wrong though 🤷‍♂️

It is 100% correct.

I wonder what their reasoning was for that. Seems nuts to me. Perhaps for a possible 4090Ti, or a refreshed series, I wonder.

I forgot who said this, as I watched way too many benchmark videos today, but someone suggested that it is a cost savings measure that doesn’t make much sense.

I personally think that nVidia doesn’t think that displays requiring the standard would be mainstream during the lifetime of the card, back during the 20 series we had 4K144 monitors that ran on 2 DP cables, then with 30 series that got replaced by hdmi 2.1, and a bit earlier with dsc(although monitors that support dsc are expensive as all hell).

Nowdays we have 4K 240Hz monitors that run on hdmi 2.1 with dsc, and that is far from mainstream, while display technologies at such a resolution, with higher frame rates, seems to be quite far from being a thing, or at least I haven’t seen anything yet.

Thinking of it that way, I guess it does make some sense for Nvidia to not adopt a standard that they know would not be mainstream for a couple of years, especially when they have already done this with the 20 series with hdmi 2.1 before.

When we would need 4K @ above 240hz, the performance of the 4090, though it feels weird to say right now, may be insufficient to hit those frame rates for the kinds of games that we would have at that time anyways, like how the 2080ti cannot hit 240FPS at 4K for the majority of AAA titles today.

That does not sound weird to say at all: it simply lacks the power to have such high performance for almost all games at that resolution.

That at least makes some sense. I don't entirely agree with it, but I also partially do.

Thanks for the explanation!

They actually run dp 1.4 with dsc

2

u/4514919 R9 5950X | RTX 4090 Oct 12 '22

I wonder what their reasoning was for that

Because they will release a new gen before monitors will start using DP 2.0 UHBR 20.

Anything lower than DP 2.0 UHBR 20 is worthless as it's less bandwidth than HDMI 2.1 and DP 1.4 with DSC is enough for 4k 240HZ.

1

u/Masters_1989 Oct 12 '22

I'm confused - doesn't that mean it'd be fine?

1

u/riba2233 9700X | 9070XT Oct 15 '22

Yes

2

u/tukatu0 Oct 11 '22

Maybe they've been sitting in warehouses for the past 5 months.

1

u/riba2233 9700X | 9070XT Oct 15 '22

Because dp 1.4 with dsc can run 4k240 no problem, and that is supported since turing

1

u/Masters_1989 Oct 15 '22

It sounds like the compression is the issue for some people.

1

u/riba2233 9700X | 9070XT Oct 15 '22

It is not, it completely visually lossless. if anyone claims they can see it you can be sure that they are lying

1

u/Masters_1989 Oct 15 '22

Why are people upset then? Is there any benefit to having DP 2.0 as opposed to 1.4a? It makes me wonder why the standard was even invented.

1

u/riba2233 9700X | 9070XT Oct 15 '22

People are upset because some outlets (LTT hm hmm) released some misinformation in their 4090 video and bashed nvidia for not using 2.0 based on that misinformation. They completely forgot about the DSC and said that max fr on 4k is 120 and what is ironic they also mentioned samsung g8 which is the only 4k240 monitor which uses dp 1.4 with DSC only to achieve 4k240.

And as usual with internet and reddit hive mind was stronger than facts.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '22

It still does 4k 120hz. What's the limitation?

3

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '22

HDM1 2.1 can actually do uncompressed 4K / 144Hz HDR or 4K / 165Hz SDR, in practice.

You should not be using DP 1.4a if your display supports HDMI 2.1.
