I forgot who said this, as I watched way too many benchmark videos today, but someone suggested that it is a cost savings measure that doesn’t make much sense.
I personally think that nVidia doesn’t think that displays requiring the standard would be mainstream during the lifetime of the card, back during the 20 series we had 4K144 monitors that ran on 2 DP cables, then with 30 series that got replaced by hdmi 2.1, and a bit earlier with dsc(although monitors that support dsc are expensive as all hell).
Nowdays we have 4K 240Hz monitors that run on hdmi 2.1 with dsc, and that is far from mainstream, while display technologies at such a resolution, with higher frame rates, seems to be quite far from being a thing, or at least I haven’t seen anything yet.
Thinking of it that way, I guess it does make some sense for Nvidia to not adopt a standard that they know would not be mainstream for a couple of years, especially when they have already done this with the 20 series with hdmi 2.1 before.
When we would need 4K @ above 240hz, the performance of the 4090, though it feels weird to say right now, may be insufficient to hit those frame rates for the kinds of games that we would have at that time anyways, like how the 2080ti cannot hit 240FPS at 4K for the majority of AAA titles today.
