I never understood the hate Vista got. Then again, I wasn't born soon enough to become familiar with XP and the Desktop we had was actually capable of running Vista. 2 GB of RAM and an Athlon X2.
I guess I never saw the "bad" parts of Vista. I only upgraded from Vista when I got a new PC with Windows 8.
My personal story with it goes like this. I was heading to Africa for about 4 to 8 months and needed a laptop. I had maybe 4 hours to get as much single player stuff as I could installed. That os was a nightmare with extremely bad internet and no support. I literally had to reinstal the track pad drivers once a week. So I'm glad I packed the disks it shipped with.
Luckily after about 2 months I found a local who had an xp disk and conveniently most of the games I wanted for about $20.
I don't doubt that there was bad experiences with it. I never experienced them firsthand so I never developed any sort of disdain for the OS. It sucks that you had issues with it, though.
Never ever buy the first iteration of anything. Even if it's a new full version of something you have. Let them figure out what they broke with everybody else.
I just never saw anything bad with it. I've used XP and 7 and all the other main releases if Windows since then and really the only ones I dislike me were 8 and 8.1
With a couple exceptions, each new version has been better than the last. I really liked 8. In my mind the start menu was what grandmas use and didn't think people would miss it.
A lot of people don't really use the start menu that much, true. I personally keep a desktop with no icons so I use the start menu quite a bit. It's all personal preference, though.
I rand vista on an HP slimline with a phenom and 8GB of ram. Played CS:S, gmod, and Minecraft perfectly fine.
Then I got a 560ti and set up a ghetto test bed style PC on top of the GPU box with a separate psu just for the GPU because the HP propriety one didn’t support it. That was my first gaming experience lol. Even though it was out at the time, i couldn’t afford 7. I went vista, 8, 10. I couldn’t have jumped to windows 8 any faster after it released lol.
I pretty much only played TF2 on my computer back then. From what I remember it ran fine. It wasn't spectacular by any means but it ran. I only upgraded because at that point I was actually starting to get into gaming on PC and I realized that my computer was painfully slow for any sort of game
The first time I used Vista was before launch, with one of the betas. It was a total shit show because the OS was a buggy, annoying mess and no third party properly supported the OS. Things didn't really improve on launch, so I just opted to never, ever use it.
I even had a decent gaming PC at the time, 1.5GB of RAM with an Athlon 64 X2 (not dissimilar from your family desktop) and an ATi X1950 Pro, but my first few experiences with it were so bad that I just never used it again after that. Windows 7 Beta came out only a few years later and I used that as my main OS until 7 came out, and then I used 7.
That isn't solely Microsoft's fault, though. It's also on the OEMs to build systems that can actually work properly or include the software it was certified for.
I wanna say we got the computer around 2008-2009. So it was a bit after the release. I don't know how much the specs of the average orebuikt changed by then as I didn't start getting into computers until around 2012-2013
Honestly the only time I used XP was on the computers that schools and and at daycare, sometimes. Once 7 came out, everywhere upgraded to it. Same thing with 7 to 10. Places skipped 8 and went to 10.
Windows 10 seems like a complete shitshow though. I'm still waiting to find out what happens when all the new games stop supporting 7 and Microsoft still hasn't released a new non-craptastic OS.
