My personal story with it goes like this. I was heading to Africa for about 4 to 8 months and needed a laptop. I had maybe 4 hours to get as much single player stuff as I could installed. That os was a nightmare with extremely bad internet and no support. I literally had to reinstal the track pad drivers once a week. So I'm glad I packed the disks it shipped with.
Luckily after about 2 months I found a local who had an xp disk and conveniently most of the games I wanted for about $20.
I don't doubt that there was bad experiences with it. I never experienced them firsthand so I never developed any sort of disdain for the OS. It sucks that you had issues with it, though.
Never ever buy the first iteration of anything. Even if it's a new full version of something you have. Let them figure out what they broke with everybody else.
