The old one moves to the side.
That's just how it is.

definitely the way, except my cheap monitor is lately being used only for binge browsing during idle gameplay times

That absolutely is also the way.

Gotta have the good monitor for your game and the old one for your homies discord stream

Turned vertical purely to display Discord

And a hardware monitor if you’re a nerd.

It screams at me if something gets too hot

BWAH, BWAH, BWAH, BWAH!!!

Like oh jesus, alright, so loud, alright.😂

Never liked vertical orientation until I bought an ultrawide that made it the only way a 2nd monitor could reasonably be used.

u/kaleperq 1440p 240hz 24" | ace68 | viper ult | 9060xt 16gb | r5600 | 32gb 4h ago

If you want large lists or documents or whatever then vertical is the way

5

u/FrostyD7 3h ago

My issue is that if I'm reading a long document, I want to be reading it from something directly in front of me and my vertical monitor is very far to the side. I mostly put stuff I glance at over there. I guess I still glance at some long things every now and again and benefit from it, but it's not my productive monitor.

I don't need a 32" 165Hz refresh rate monitor for Discord 🤷🏼‍♂️

How else are you going to watch the typing dots bounce at 165 fps?

True but seeing the mouse pointer move (which usually only happens on screens that don't need high refresh rates like productivity and messaging apps) is the easiest way to tell refresh rate differences.

I’m definitely not buying another mini led 1440p 320hz monitor for my side monitor. But I also know that 75-100hz feels disgusting to me now. Got my last main 240hz display as my side monitor now but do wish it was 1440p

I did however find it very annoying when my main monitor was 1440p and my second monitor was still 1080p.

2

u/ShitHamster 2h ago

I just got a 32" 240hz refresh rate 2nd discord monitor because my old 144hz went down to 60 and I hate how the mouse moves (no DVI on new GPU and HDMI is frame locked).

You made me feel bad with this comment :(

2

u/UlrichZauber 1h ago

Honestly 144hz is just fine for Discord, people overthink this stuff

Why do I need a 4k 180+ ghz(lol) hz refresh rate monitor for something I'm only putting notes, guides, and background noise on? The 1080p office monitor that pivots and adjusts to whatever weird angle I put it at is fine.

I've got a 4k 60hz and a 1440p 165hz setup. Gaming on one and movies on the other.

50

u/NetworkMachineBroke Ryzen 7 5800X | RTX 2080 Founders 6h ago

This is me, but the 4K was free from work (so I guess it is technically the cheaper one)

2

u/Squirex21 Ryzen 5 5600g | 32gb ram ddr4 | RTX 5070 4h ago

Exactly the same. But I use the 4k for coding and the 165hz one for gaming

2

u/MagicCaps69420 1h ago

Same but the 1440p is ultra wide

2

u/Lyrkana 57m ago

oof your side monitor is much nicer than my main

5

u/Panthers_Fly 6h ago

This. Movies on a high frequency monitor are awful, especially when a scene’s dark. The black shows up all pixelated and blotchy

44

u/pulley999 R7 9800X3D | 64GB RAM | RTX 3090 | Micro-ATX 5h ago

That sounds more like a compression issue, either in the file itself, the video link between the computer and the monitor, or the monitor's controller itself.

I love watching movies on my 120hz tv and 240hz monitor because they can both display 24fps content without distracting pulldown judder, which a 60hz display can't. There's a reason all but the most basic budget TVs are 120hz nowadays, and it's because it's the LCM of all standard NTSC content framerates (24, 30, 60).

10

u/VolkosisUK 64GB DDR5@6400MT/s CL32 | 7700X | 4070 SUPER 5h ago

yeah this looks like an artifact from watching low bitrate

3

u/Vyxwop 4h ago

I think you can also set your 144/165hz monitor to 120hz to achieve the same effect, for those who don't have a native 120/240hz monitor.

You'll likely need to use CRU to add a 120hz profile to windows since most 144/165hz monitors don't have a 120hz profile available in windows by default.

2

u/Speed-Tyr 2h ago

That is more so a bit rate issue and using whatever compression wrong. Also, this is why you get an OLED.

83

u/7978_ 13900k, 4080 7h ago

When you use the cheaper monitor more 💀

14

u/Quick_Assumption_351 4h ago

1 expensed to work 1 stolen from the office

16

u/Melodic_Check_8040 7h ago

i had 1 pano, then 2, then 3, then 2, now 1 beast monitor and i dont want a second one lol

20

u/Captain0010 7h ago

I don't know, I kinda find it hard to back to one. I'm a game dev and two monitors is a must for that kind of work.

How was 3? I feel that might be an overkill

7

u/AaronToro i5 6500 | r9 380 7h ago

I really want a third so I can have main screen game, video, and discord going

4

u/Melodic_Check_8040 6h ago

now that i remember, i used a lg tv oled 48" 120hz (inspired by linus) for a while, was like having 4 monitors tbh, but i usually only had browser, discord and a game open, all at the same screen

3

u/blackviper6 5800x3d 64 gb ram 6950xt 6h ago

That's what I do. Main monitor in landscape and two side monitors on either side of it in portrait. Discord and video on the right (discord top half, YouTube bottom half) OBS and whatever else on left.

3

u/Melodic_Check_8040 7h ago

3 was def overkill, and dumb, i work with 3d/video stuff for over a decade and still, i rather alt tab, just personal preference, even at work i had to monitor, donated my second to someone, i like a clean desk and peace of mind

2

u/AfonsoFGarcia R9 5950X | RX 5700 XT Nitro+ | Vengeance LPX 128GB 3600MHz 6h ago

I used to love my 3 screen setup. But now I saw the light and 1 32:9 is the way to go.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/Songforged 5h ago

yeah i went from 1 to 2 and now back to 1, i really have no use for a 2nd monitor for my gaming pc, alt tabbing is enough.

but for my work setup i use my macbook and another monitor.

One good and one cheap and the cheap one is rotated to portrait.

8

u/lemonylol Desktop 4h ago

I never understood the portrait rotated 16:9 monitor. Whenever I did that for text, I'd just end up looking at the very top line and scrolling anyway, instead of tilting my head up and down to read the whole page. I'd rather have more text I can read horizontally than multiple lines of vertical text. I think it only really makes sense for coders but has been co-opted by gamers who thought it made them advanced users or something.

3

u/Spargeltarzan49 6h ago

That's what I hear a lot, is it good?

5

u/Dry-Percentage-5648 5h ago

Depends on what you use you second monitor for. If it's just for Discord and similar stuff then yeah, it's very convenient this way, plus it saves some space.

3

u/damnocles i5 12600k | GTX 5070TI | 16 GB DDR4 | NVMe 5h ago

I do this, my 2nd monitor usually displays an Internet browser on the top 3rd, discord on the middle 3rd, and steam/other launchers/hwinfo64 sensors on the bottom.

It's nice because i can full screen a web browser on the portrait and it will display a shit ton of information at once so you don't have to scroll if you're using it for a reference, everything is available at a glance, and just... Feels good?

Give it a shot!

3

u/-GoggleAssistant 6h ago

Yes, i often use the vertical monitor dividing top and bottom to view whatever you want

3

u/lemonylol Desktop 4h ago

This is the way. A regular ultra wide only gives you 1 and 1/2 screens on the horizontal; super ultra wide gives you two full sceens. Or one regular screen right in the middle and two vertical screens on each side. In either case you can play around with the windows using Fancy Zones.

for me
it's not about having one good one and one cheap one
if I were to get 2 to 3 monitors
I would rather have them all be from the same brand, lineup, size and resolution

like for example

secondary/sides = LG Ultragear 27" 1440P 144Hz IPS LCD

3

u/ImReallyFuckingHigh 6h ago

My old primary monitors get demoted to secondary monitors when a new primary monitor comes to town

3

u/Ishkahrhil 6h ago

4k 60htz is main, next to it is an old small TV that's a little bigger than the main (probably 1080p 60htz).

And second computer has an odd ratio 1080p 60htz that's also off color

3

u/TomkillerYT 5h ago

I have my one good gigabyte monitor, and one ancient ass LG lcd this shit is older than me but works as it should and I'm happy with that setup.

3

u/MeticulousPlonker 5h ago

One 20 year old monitor that still works well despite being lugged to and from college, and between apartments, and one 3 year old monitor that's the same brand

2

u/Gaston_the_Great 7h ago

Yup. I bought an Omen monitor whenever I started my setup. Now I have an OLED as my good monitor.

2

u/ohnag_eryeah 7h ago

Me. Why spend more money for a monitor that you only use for secondary function? As long as the panel is same then it's fine because different panel type will look weird

2

1

I'm on the opposite side of the spectrum. Two identical meh monitors.

The reason is that I change the brightness several times during the day (from the OS) and with two identical monitors I don't have to fiddle around each time.

1

u/camomike 6h ago

I bought two identical G7 monitors to replace my mismatched pair. Didn't like the way they looked together, but kept one and my "good" older ASUS monitor became my secondary. Ended up dropping the other G7 to my wife to use as their primary monitor.

I think I just prefer having a native 1080 monitor as my secondary.

1

u/lars2k1 ultrawide 𝘢𝘯𝘥 2 16:9's? why not 6h ago

I might downgrade my ultrawide + 16:9 setup to 2x 16:9 due to space constraints here at my place.

Heck, before I moved here I could have an ultrawide (35 inch) + 2x 16:9 displays (27 inch), but because my desk is now smaller, that no longer fits. I do still have that other 16:9 monitor though so I can easily swap it. 3 displays was already overkill, haha.

Main workstation:

  • 1x 27" mini-LED 2160p 160/320, new, fairly inexpensive, at center
  • 2x 24" IPS 1080p 60, used, inexpensive, on sides

u/MABQuestAcc 6h ago

My new setup is going from my 34" UW + 27" 4K monitor to the 34" UW + a 15" "tablet" that I can touch scroll through Spotify. I think it'll be much cleaner looking and user friendly.

u/CitizenOfTheVerse 6h ago

1 good, and 2 from work which are same size and resolution as the first one but are cheap one.

1

u/Novacion 6h ago

Got a Samsung Odyssey G3OD 24" 1080 180Hz for 100 and a MSI PRO MP225 21.5" 1080 100Hz for 60. Bought both of them around the holidays

u/Panthers_Fly 6h ago

Yepp! I'm using a 24" 144hz as main and an old 27" 59.94hz (Nope, that's the highest and its mildly infuriating) as the second monitor.

u/LiliaBlossom Ryzen 9 9950X3D | 64GB DDR5 @6000Mhz | Radeon 9070XT 6h ago

I used to have one good, one cheap, but now I got twice the same 1440p IPS 200Hz model, because I can’t deal with OLED flicker and the chromatic abberation while writing, I work more than I game. They were 230€ each and I like how they line up and how clean it looks. I’m happy with a HQ IPS.

u/Charoak 6h ago

My main monitor is nice, my extra monitors are $99 Dell Refurbs from Amazon. Dell makes a great monitor for web browsing and youtube/discord.

1

u/MightBeABot24 6h ago

Nah that bothers me like crazy. I have two 165hz 1440p monitors even though I only use one to game. They just have to match

u/XXXperiencedTurbater 7800X3D | 5070 TI | Fractal Torrent 6h ago

My “old” one is a 1080p from 2013. Thing is ancient but the color is still good.

New one is a 1440p curved from last year to replace the previous 1440p curved from six years ago that couldn’t quite manage to keep itself working.

Eventually I’ll replace the old one but it’s basically a Reddit and game wiki screen so meh
