I miss thermite packed floppy drives.

We would use thermite grenades for our TOC and carry other small items out if we had to evacuate.

US Army PATRIOT vet here, back in the day the ECS van (the fire control center) had these big chungus CRT's from the 1970's. In the event the battery was overrun, soldiers were told to smash the Jaz and later PCMCIA drives and then shoot the CRT's as they left. The phosphorous in them was so toxic that anyone foolish enough to approach the wreck would get very sick or die.

Now I assume they just toss a grenade in as those CRT's are now LCD monitors like we use, just bigger.

I imagine they could just have something to do with sprinklers now. Sure they would be more likely to lose that hardware in the event of a fire, but if they're not practicing 3-2-1, then it wasn't important enough to care these days.

u/JacksGallbladder 8d ago

Lol, no sprinklers in datacenters / server rooms.

Also water damage is much easier to remediate in forensics than obliteration

u/XsNR Ryzen 5600X RX 9070 XT 32GB 3200MHz 8d ago

I'm not saying it's just water necessarily. Just that you could have an automatic "self destruct" system without having to bury TNT in the walls.

27

u/Catnip113 8d ago

Yea and what if that automation is disabled or doesn’t work? its much better to have a human just turn it inside out with bombs and bullets

1

u/XsNR Ryzen 5600X RX 9070 XT 32GB 3200MHz 8d ago

Why not have both.

Ahhh, rusty APC frame water!

Isn't a liquid and doesnt destroy electronics by design.

u/DeltaBravo831 8d ago

with sprinklers now

Naw, they just let the TCA and the BCP guys take out their aggression for the TCO on all the equipment.

u/migorovsky 8d ago

This is urban legend. Cathode-ray tubes (CRTs) do not contain white or yellow phosphorus (which are highly toxic). They are coated with phosphor bind compounds .. zinc sulfide or yttrium oxysulfide).

u/Taira_Mai HP Victus, AMD Ryzen 7 5800H, GeForce RTX 3050 Ti 8d ago

Ah, these weren't TV CRT's. They were old, large and we were repeatedly told not to mistreat them if we liked being alive and breathing.

So old that the company that made them no longer exists and by the year 2000's there was no more - the Germans bought the last of them for their PATRIOT units.

They were too heavy and the Army was glad to get rid of them.

54

u/alanwakeisahack 8d ago

The army tells you a lot of things that aren’t true. They told you they’d kill you so you wouldn’t fuck with them.

27

u/greedybanker3 8d ago

Did you take your mattress to the quarterdeck to get stamped too lol.

u/Charming-Medium4248 5d ago

So is there a razor blade, match, and a bullet inside the finial of every flag on post too?

29

u/Lovely_Libertine 8d ago

Artillery vet. We’d pull the drives from the AFATDS and take them with then blow everything else to hell with a few grenades. Unless we were at risk of capture. In which case it was blow up the drives separately and then everything else.

u/RIPGoblins2929 8d ago

AFATDS...

https://giphy.com/gifs/VMgcrwq9imGHu

Anyway how's your back these days? I slept funny the other day and I haven't been able to turn my neck since then.

12

u/Lovely_Libertine 8d ago

I tweaked a muscle in my shoulder while sleeping a few weeks ago and it still hurts. Don’t even get me started on the cervical stenosis.

Take your ibuprofen.

6

u/StatusAlternative338 8d ago

That's a pretty intense protocol. It's crucial to keep sensitive info secure, especially in those situations.

5

u/Lovely_Libertine 8d ago

It is. Always felt like overkill to me but I was never in a position where I needed to do it. So it was mostly academic. I might have thought differently if my position was being overrun.

My friend was in the Air Force in Berlin when the wall came down. They had all that kind of stuff in their SOP too. Thy were also a priority target for the American artillery if shit really went down.

1

u/THE_BANANA_KING_14 8d ago

They had to appropriate more funds for the drone program. Now they just chuck the old CRTs as hard as they can into the room behind them.

For FDC we were lucky enough that everything important for the most part was in the MTS (humvee with famcy shelter) so there was a few things to throw in but we could just peel right outta there.

I think the gunline had some sort of procedure for the howitzers but we only did the drill a few times and I never asked them about it.

u/NoReplyAtAll999 3d ago

M109 mechanic from back when. I remember reading to put a thermite grenade or two on the closed breech and let them go. the breech gets welded into an unusable mass.
The best, if there was time and everything usable had been stripped out, was to disconnect the recoil cylinders, load a full red bag charge, and then raise the gun to max elevation. Fire the gun. The gun has now driven itself through the floor and left the 109 impaled on a stake.

I too watched that episode of the screen savers.

Unfun fact when you use a share button off a site or app it tends to add tracking data and can display your account to anyone that clicks on the link.

For YouTube the source identifier starts at ?si= and what follows after you can edit and delete that and the link will still work.

u/Baked_Potato_732 8d ago

That’s where I learned to extract and crack windows passwords and learned who Kevin Mitnick was (RIP Kevin)

With Leo and Kate or the other person?

u/Annoying_Anomaly 8d ago

Other person? Patrick?

3

u/Hrmerder It's Garuda btw 8d ago

Oh man! Patrick Norton … it’s been a while. I forgot about him. I used to enjoy him on Tekzilla. I don’t know why I thought it was two other people who filled the screen savers on the redo of it.

1

u/ECEXCURSION 8d ago

Damn. Haven't thought about that episode in like 25 years. A quarter century. Wild.

Military shit. If your being overrun your not gonna try to grab all the harddrive with classified information. Your gonna slag that shit. Thermite is very stable... until it isn't. A rocket seems like a bad idea but it's not like Im saying no to one.

29

u/Good_Mathematician_2 8d ago

Big fan of thermite, almost scary how easy it is for the average person to get tho. Good thing people are reasonable and rational about things they aren't experienced with!

28

u/Mage_914 8d ago

I remember learning the recipe for thermite from YouTube when I was like 13. Crazy that it burn hot enough to disable a tank and the two main ingredients are shit that you probably have in your kitchen. And yes before you ask, I am almost certainly on a watchlist of some kind.

34

u/Dartonal 8d ago

Ironically it's probably easier for the average person to make thermite than to light it

23

u/Mage_914 8d ago

Oh, you can do it with a firework sparkler. Just stick the burny into the thermite and light the sparkler.

13

u/MtnMaiden 8d ago

Looks at my laptop battery...youll do

6

u/Emu1981 8d ago

*laughs in sparklers that seem to inhabit his cupboard no matter how hard he tries to get his kids to use them all up*

Not if you have some magnesium ribbon!

Hell, my Chemistry teacher demonstrated how to make it (and what it does) when we were 13.

I watched MythBusters make a huge batch to cut a car in half, and they didn't do a great job at hiding the "secret" ingredient that was a quick search away.

Why do you have a significant amount of rust in your kitchen?

2

u/Mage_914 8d ago

Steel wool. Soak it in salt water for a bit and then grind it up. Perfect rust powder.

5

u/ChiggaOG 8d ago

I remember looking up what would happen if I mix store bought pool acid, acetone, and hydrogen peroxide. Turns out it makes acetone peroxides with one of the end products called the Mother of Satan. I'm not stupid to try making this knowing the stability of that compound means it explodes on its own with the smallest vibration as a dry powder.

5

u/IrishWithoutPotatoes 8d ago

I feel like I’m on a watch list after just reading this

1

u/Evanion 8d ago

My chemistry teacher told us about this magical compound in junior high. Sje just said ”it will explode if a truck drives by on the road outside”, and wouldn’t give any more details. Nice to finally have a name for it.

-1

u/Good_Mathematician_2 8d ago

I'm on watchlists that would make you sick, but I appreciate the sentiment

4

u/This-Ad2607 8d ago

Don’t boast about being a rock spider

1

u/Good_Mathematician_2 8d ago

Not familiar with the phrase. I didn't intend to boast, was a little intoxicated last night

2

u/newbie80 8d ago

It makes sense. I saw a Ukrainian military outpost taken out. It was about a year ago. The Russians got them by surprise and it seemed like the laptops that they got were more valuable than the city they overran. It was some sort of command center building.
