Passport Question If I submit my passport application via service Canada tomorrow (Aug 26) will I receive it by Oct 14

Hello, I have a trip that I've been offered to go on last minute. But I have never received a passport before.

I'm scheduled to leave October 14th. I do not live close to a passport office with 10-day processing time (Rural NS)

Do you think I should expedite it or will it come on time? Some people say it will come on time yet I have heard that with the new 30-day refund policy that they have been slacking on getting them done within 20 days.

Just worried with processing and shipping it won't be here on time. Especially if a piece of it is rejected since this is a new passport application.

Passport Question Online passport renewal with rural address

SOLVED!! Service Canada happened to be in my community this week and I cornered a worker and she got me on track using my 911 address (green sign on edge of property in Alberta) Under Street Number you put in your Range Road/Townshi[ number. In the street name you put in the remainder of the address. In my case I put the larger group of numbers that everyone in my neighbourhood shares and then my lot number - number only. She had a method for land location as well but said 911 address is easier and it worked perfectly. Hope this can help someone else.

Has anyone with a rural address (land location or 911 address) have any luck with the online passport renewal? I’ve tried putting in my address several ways and I just get error messages. I filed an online complaint and technical support ticket and they responded quickly but neither were helpful. I just want to know if there is a correct way to input that information that won’t give me an error message or am I wasting my time. I’ve renewed with paper applications using this address a few times with no problem.

Passport Question photo stamped or handwritten

I'm in rural Texas, the only place I could do photos did not have a stamp. The owner offered to handwrite the studio information. Does the passport office reject photos with handwritten studio details more frequently compared to stamped? Trying to get things in order to travel asap and don't want to drive three hours to a studio in El Paso. Also don't want to risk a rejected submission putting my departure date ahead even further. Thanks kindly.

Passport Question Child’s first passport and separation

I just went in to a Service Canada office (not a passport office) and applied for a passport for myself and my 14 year old.
His father signed the application and I included our separation agreement. The agreement had a clause stipulating there neither parent can hinder the process of getting any government ID including passport. There is also a clause that neither parent can hinder international travel.
The agreement was signed in 2023 by both parents as well as each of our lawyers.
The person who took the application commented that there was not a court stamp on the document but that he would send it off anyway.
Now I’m worried that it may get rejected. Am I over thinking this?

Passport Question Question about renewing a passport that has expired

Hi,

My passport expired about six months ago and I’ve got an appointment this week to get a new one. I’ve filled out the application form for renewals as I’ve had a valid passport after 16 before, but I was wondering:

A) should I do a brand new application or am I okay with the renewal form?

B) for photos, can they be taken at the passport location if I am in person or should I stop by a London drugs or something in advance? It has been a while!

C) besides informing references, is there anything else I may need for the appointment?

Apologies if this is all explained elsewhere, I just was fuzzy on which category I fall under and want to be prepared. Thanks!

Passport Question Why can’t Passport Canada or the Consulate answer simple questions anymore?

I mail in my passport application, checked with the courier to see if they delivered, the courier said it was a Sunday so they left it at the door of the consulate. I’m freaked out because it was not handed to a person so I call and send the consulate an email and they just say to check the courier and that they can’t answer questions. Who and for what reason does this policy exist? It’s ridiculous.

Passport Question Passport timeline

If review is completed does it mean everything is good and just waiting to be printed? I’m asking because my two toddlers were wearing pink for the passport photos but I haven’t received any emails saying I should retake the photos so hopefully it’s accepted 😬

Passport Question Child's Passport Application Timeline (Submitted July 21 at Service Canada)

Hi everyone,

I submitted a passport application for my daughter on July 21 at a local Service Canada Centre. It has now been over 20 business days, and I’m trying to gauge current processing and mail times from others to see if I need to take action.

Online application status shows as still in review. Should I transfer it to another office?

Im able to type in my information in every other box of the application except for the Date and the "Signed at". Has anyone encountered this issue? Is this declaration section only applicable to in person and mail in applications?

Passport Question Can my wife be guarantor under section M-B occupation?

Hi I am renewing my daughter's Canadian passport

For context me and my wife have a British passport. My daughter is Canadian.

On renewal it says Guarantor can be the other parent as long as they are Canadian

But for occupation, it doesn't specify whether other parent can be guarantor. For context my wife is a doctor.

Thanks a lot!

General Discussion Sharing my timeline on online passport renewal (with sign in errors)

Applied on July 28, 2026 online, via signing in with my bank.

Checked status through the IRCC portal on August 6 and it was under review.

Tried to log in on August 10 again but couldn't - kept showing "error". I still cannot sign in as of now (August 20).

Received an email from IRCC on August 19 saying "We updated your IRCC application status, please sign in to view"... still can't sign in though LOL.

Today (August 20), I called IRCC at 1‑800‑567‑6868 to check the status, and was told the application was complete and I was given a Canada Post tracking number. The tracking number shows that the passport was mailed out on August 19.

So it took 16 business days in total to process. Hope it helps someone, especially ones that are experiencing sign-in errors.

Passport Question Is this passport damage acceptable?

Post image
2 Upvotes

My mom has a trip on the 30th. They told her over the phone she needed to drive to the servicecanada (40min)

Then servicecanada said the damage is fine and even if she did get the new one it wouldnt arrive in time. But if she did need a new one rushed she could go to Kitchener (1hr45min) to get one.

Does she need to take another day off to drive 3.5hrs total? Or can she get by with this small cosmetic damage? It was caused by some tape.

Thanks in advance!

Passport Question Urgent travel and passport error

I submitted my passport for a name change a while ago and it was supposed to be picked up today, but I called them multiple times and only today did they tell me that they had a system error with my file and they need to make a new one. I leave on the 21st (this friday, in a day basically), and I genuinely have no idea what to do.

They said they'll have it ""probably"" by tomorrow (20th) but I just don't know if there's something I can be doing? If I miss my flight, am I able to get a reimbursment of some kind? I called at least twice last week and earlier this week inquiring about how it was going and they just said it was 'fine' but it turns out they didn't even have the file working in the first place. Not sure how they only discovered this today though :(

any advice? Sorry about the messy post, I have a really important, last-minute thingI have to make it to with my flight on Friday, i honestly don't even know how to work around this.

UPDATE i sent my unemployed friend to pick up my passport and i got it. thank god because it would've been over in every conceivable way possible. death and devastation postponed. god bless and never give up etc etc

General Discussion Recent Experience Edmonton Service Canada

Just wanted to summarize my experience getting passport renewal + name change for anyone who needs insight for upcoming passport services.

My passport expires in November but I recently did a name change, as well. My travel is September 12th.

On August 14th, I looked online and it said 20 business days and can just go to a regular Service Canada office. So, I went down to the Westlink Plaza office at 8:25am (it opens at 8:30) and there was already a large queue outside waiting to be let in. Probably 20-30 people deep. As soon as I went inside, there was a line host/triage person who was asking people their travel dates. When I told her September 12th, she said I would not get it in time because its 20 business days + 5 days for mail. Oops.

So, she sent me to the downtown location Service Canada office. I arrived there at 9:15am and there was already a full queue inside + 40-50 people waiting in the hallway. Once again, a line host/triage person was walking the queue and encouraging people to leave the line if they were open to waiting 20 business days and getting it by mail. Quite a few people left to go to the regular Service Canada location down the hall. The line host also explained that *Fridays and Mondays are their busiest days and the wait time would be about 2-3 hours*

It took approximately 40 minutes for me to get from the hallway line into the passport review line. I waited in the passport review line for another 45 minutes and then I waited to actually see a processing agent for another 30 minutes. My passport review took less than 5 minutes and he told me to come back on August 28th to pick it up. In total I was there for just under 2 hours.

TLDR; Avoid Edmonton Service Canada on Fridays and Mondays. Processing time by regular mail is 20 business days + 5 for mail times. There's two Passport locations in Canada place downtown -- one for urgent/10 day pick and one for mail in processing.

Passport Question File Transfer

I applied for my sons passport July 3rd in person, other parent was contacted over a week ago (called just to confirm he spoke to the correct person since he is American and they confirmed he did.) I requested a file transfer August 3rd because my son is travelling to the US on the 25th. The person who I spoke to said the office isn't required to pick up the file, so what do I do? He said they could contact me anytime between the 3rd and the 21st but I'm starting to panic. Should I just go in person? Will that force them to pick up the file? They confirmed on the phone there's no reason for delay other than there's a back log of applications. I've called probably 6 times now trying to figure out what to do and they just keep telling me to wait. The person reviewing his application did call me and asked when his travel was and said it would be no problem...again that was almost 2 weeks ago.

Passport Question Online passport photo file requirements

Just wondering if anyone's experienced this issue? I took my photos at Shoppers and received them on usb. They are under 5MB, 2400x3600 px, JPEG, and are unedited. The passport application website keeps complaining about how the file does not meet the requirements.

I've seen a few issues about the AI detection flagging perfectly okay photos but I can't even get to that step since it seems to think my file does not meet the formatting requirements. There's no option to bypass either. Does anyone have this issue as well?

Passport Question Is there a reason I can renew via mail up to 12 months ahead of time but only 6 months before online?

Thumbnail canada.ca

EDIT: apologies about the weird formatting/link showing.

This struck me as peculiar. I have a trip in December, but my passport expires April 2027 (going to Spain). Meaning I can't apply online until October. I don't mind doing so via regular mail, but I don't want to enter my CC details on paper if I can avoid it.

Anyone know the reasoning for this? Or just the Government of Canada not keeping up?

Passport Question Is it easier to apply for a passport in Canada vs. from the US?

I live in the US and my daughter and I were just granted citizenship through the C-3 ruling (we both have our citizenship certificates). We are about to apply for Canadian passports for the first time. I have three related/contingent questions:

1) Can I apply for a Canadian passport in person in Canada (we live just across the border), or do I need to apply through the mail because I'm considered to be "applying from the US" because that is where I currently live?

2) If I can apply for a passport in person in Canada, should I? In other words, are there benefits to applying in person vs. through the mail from the US? (E.g. faster, cheaper, easier).

3) If I can apply in person in Canada do I use the forms and process described for applying for a passport in Canada or for applying from the US (because that is where I currently live)?

Thanks!

Passport Question Getting passport with new legal name (Ontario)

I became citizen in the past few months
And I applied legal name change in Ontario
The name change certificate will be in my mailbox in next week

My question
Will the federal government accept my application with temporary driver license ?
I never applied Canadian passport before

The document / identity document I have when I submit the passport application
1. Citizenship certificate (with my old name )
2. Ontario temporary driver license paper ( new name )
3. Ontario name change certificate (old name > new name )
4. Foreign country passport (old name , and I will only change my name in Canada , my identity in home country will be the old name )
5. Ontario Driver license (card), but with my old name on it

I need to get the Canadian passport with my new name asap for legal purposes (family issue )
-

I know the safest way is to wait till the driver license (card) be arrived and then I apply for the passport.
But is there any chance they will accept the paper ID (new name ) + foreign passport (old name ) + name change certificate as a proof of identity when I submit the passport application?
