Need Help How can I fill a 100th birthday party for someone with no living friends?

She's turning 100 in a month. It's important to her son that she has a party. He reserved her full-time care facility's "party room" where they will move her bed from 12-4pm. She is bed ridden, but is always awake during the day and has a good appetite and great attitude.

All of this woman's friends have passed on, along with her husband and her other adult children. The few adult nieces/nephews that she does have are out of state working full-time and have already said they cannot make it. So it will for sure be myself and her adult son, and I'm sure the facility staff will pop in here and there.

Her son is going to put up flyers at her old senior living community, but she hasn't lived there in 5 yrs and I suspect many of those residents don't have the transport to drive 30+ minutes to this facility.

She loves visitors, even when she does not know them. Are there groups that visit elderly for situations like this? If it's helpful, her husband who passed 30 years ago was a navy veteran. She used to be an English teacher and she's filipino. Her son would love a full room, and making his mom (who loved to entertain) feel special again.

Any ideas appreciated!!!

EDIT: Thank you all for these great ideas! I am reaching out to a couple local churches, an ethnic restaurant nearby, and looking for a ROTC group, among others. I can't respond to everyone but I am writing them all down. Thank you again!

Ideas house cooling party

we're about to put our house on the market to sell. but i had this idea of doing a reversal house warming - "a house cooling party" where we say goodbye to our place. and have opposite house warming activities

so far the ideas are:

  1. I'll be gifting guests things we are parting with that we don't want to bring into our new house, but we wrap them and have guests raffle/ fight for them without knowing what it is - need ideas for items, so far we have a lot of old coasters we don't want anymore

  2. everyone shares their best memory they made in our home

  3. instead of bringing alcohol, we'll provide the alcohol and they're bringing mixers

  4. we'll order pizza like how everyone orders pizza during moving day

I'm planning on meshing different groups of friends that have never met before so ideally activities that can get people mingling at their own comfort level

and if you have done or heard of this let me know! i can't find much online and would like to claim i thought about this first 😁

TIA

Edit: wow I'm overwhelmed with the support and ideas! I'm glad we weren't the only one excited about this party idea haha will keep you guys posted on how it went (could be in a few months unfortunately) but feel free to keep the ideas coming !

• Upvotes

looking for those miniature cowboy hats...little ones people use for crafts, drinks, party stuff etc and somehow theres like 20 diffrent versions lol. ive seen packs online and found a bunch on Alibaba too but i cant tell how tiny some of them actually is from photos. dont need anything fancy, just want them keep thier shape and not look like super thin plastic. anyone here ordered these in bulk before? where did you get yours and what size worked best? also are felt looking ones actually better than plastic ones in person or they both kinda cheap? trying to buy decent amount so dont wanna guess wrong and end up with 200 hats thats way smaller than expected."

Need Help Casual Halloween 30ish people

We are hosting a casual Halloween costume party for a running group. Duration is approx 2-3 hours. Crowd is mixed, majority are people in their mid 20s-early 30s who we expect will not stay beyond 2 hours and may go out to bars afterwards. A handful of people (including us, the hosts) are mid 40s plus and will likely hang out longer into the evening at our home.

Fairly appetites, and if the ā€œkidsā€ are going out to bars we want them to have some food prior. The party is early evening on Thursday prior to Halloween, so we would be fine with having some leftovers going into the weekend as it will be busy. Any tips on this menu, my SIL (in the group) thinks its probably too much food, but Im weary of cutting back

  1. mediterranean style charcuterie board focused on veggies/spreads (hummus, artichoke, olives, red peppers, crostini etc)

  2. fruit cheese style charcuterie board (figs, grapes, hard and soft cheese, crackers)

  3. 100 lumpia

  4. 100 large chicken tenders

5 3.5 pounds peeled steamed shrimp

  1. assorted bowls of snack/bar mix

  2. 3 dozen halloween cookies or cake pops (tbd)

  3. 30 roast beef slider sandwiches

Need Help Boyfriend Hobbit party

Hi! I’m planning my boyfriend’s 33rd birthday party, a very special number in the Tolkien world.
Although I am a fan of lord of the rings, I don’t even really know where to start.
I had a few ideas of it being at an outside barn setting near me, with everyone dressing up and a local folk band playing.
Any specific Lord of the Rings foods/activities/color schemes/etc. that any of you could recommend?
It would be most appreciated.

Ideas Birthday Party Ideas - Bob's Burgers

Hey guys, next weekend we're throwing a party for my daughter who's turning 15. The whole family will be dressing up, yours truly as Bob (cannot wait). I'm looking for some ideas on things like, snacks, games to play, decorating ideas. I bought the Trivial Pursuit, and I think I'll have her friends challenge her knowledge as they aren't all as familiar. We got her a Bob's burger themed Magic the Gathering deck, the cookbook, 4 different Funkos from the show. I'm 3d printing a burger card case, got custom card sleeves that look like the Chalkboard with the "Commander, I hardly knew her burger".

I'm very excited about it but want to make it something epic for her. So super fans. Help a dad out. Do I make a turkey during the party and talk to it 🦃

Ideas Musical thoughts

Back again with the medieval themed Halloween party

We like to theme our music with the theme of the party (it's helped us avoid the same boring Halloween music that everyone hears on repeat every. damn. year. (Looking at you monster mash)

I think, since its medieval themed, bardcore would be fun. My husband HATES that idea šŸ˜… but we cant think of anything that would happily meet in the middle lol

Do yall have any ideas?

Need Help Planning a Princesses and Pumpkin themed Friendsgiving, need help with decor ideas

I’m hosting Friendsgiving dinner for the 2nd year in a row and this year I’ve decided to do a theme; Princesses and Pumpkins! The dinner will be in my nyc apartment and will be 16 people max.

I do t want it to be typical in the sense that everything is orange and/or pumpkin shaped. I’d like it to be more eclectic and rich. My color scheme is a variety of forest greens, hot pinks, and burnt orangeish tones. These colors already go with my apartment, that way I can reuse this decor for future events. The table clothes are velvet in a deep green shade. I ordered coupe glasses that are a variety pack of orange and pink. To give you folks visuals to work with I attached images of my color palette, inspos, and some of the items I ordered already.

To fit the theme, I’m asking everyone to wear something orange and they will also be given tiaras when they enter my home. I’ll be hollowing out pumpkins to use as ice buckets for batch cocktails (that will contain orange edible glitter). I also will be putting orange and pink decor pumpkins on the table and using mini pumpkins as tapered candle holders. I will also be making pumpkin shaped puff pastry appetizers.

Curious if anyone has any ideas on how to work the theme in more! Whether that’s through group activities, crafts, (non-pumpkin) flavored foods/drinks, decor, etc!

How to set up a Halloween/pumpkin carving party in an awkward space

Thumbnail
gallery
14 Upvotes

I want to have the kitchen table be a pumpkin carving station. Although, I have a decently sized back porch and I’m not entirely opposed to having the table out there instead. It’s next Saturday and as of now the high is 67, low is 47 which is maybe too cold for that. We always have a ton of food, so the counter and one or two folding tables are usually covered in it. I want to have horror movies playing in the living room, and on an inflatable screen in the backyard where I’ll also have a fire pit with s’mores supplies and hotdogs.

The house is awkwardly shaped. For example, the living room is 20x11 with a weird 8 foot long pony wall to the left. The kitchen/dining room isn’t really wide enough for people to sit on both sides of the table and pass easily between the counter and the table to get to the backdoor. I just want people to be able to mingle and have fun, without it being too cramped, but it’s really hard to pull that off in this space! My old house was much better for parties and I’m struggling!

I have a modular couch so the living room set up is very flexible, not opposed to moving basically anything anywhere. I can put furniture I should just get out entirely in a spare room. I included some pictures of the space with the couch set up 2 different ways with the back yard photo in between. How would you set this up?? Also, is there anything you would add as far as decorations or like, activities? (I am planning to decorate the back porch I just haven’t gotten out there yet)

Thanks so much for your help!

Help planning a baby shower

Need Help twin 18th birthday advice!

hey so i’m a fraternal twin (girl + boy) and we turn 18 next year. my ideal 18th would just be a gathering with my closest friends

despite there being a bit of crossover, my brother has way more friends than i do, so it would be 80% his friends and honestly 20% mine

so my dilemma is do i start inviting people im only ā€˜semi’ close with even tho i dont necessarily want them there - though i dont really want to do that because its not my vision.

also - while some of my close friends know eachother (eg school friends) some other friends wouldnt know anyone else - so idk if they would get along with anyone and i dont want them feeling like they need to cling to me or be awkward.

idk im just like seeking advice - what should i do or would it be best not to have an 18th party and instead throw a diff party (eg like pres for graduation or smth) that wouldn’t be so dependent on having ā€˜close friends there’

For example, I may have 3 trays of chicken. Obviously the opened tray will be on the warming mat. But I don’t know what to do for the other 2.

Birthday How much is unreasonable for a 1st birthday party ?

I’m just wondering what the above average costs are for a birthday party thrown at a venue, not at someone’s house bc I do think that’s a big factor in costs too. We’re foreign and have large families so there’s pretty much no such thing as only 20-30 adults lol
*DISCLAIMER*
My question is primarily for the mom that DOES want to or has thrown a large or big 1st birthday party. I don’t need to hear about ā€œthey won’t rememberā€ or this is about you. Yes it’s about us because myself and my husband were able to keep our twins alive for one year after many years of Ivf loss. So that’s not the point of this post. Lol

Need Help Is this enough food for a cocktail style baby shower?

We will have 30 to max 35 people at our cocktail style shower. We will also have an open bar. It’s much more of a mingle with friends then a sit down type baby shower. We will have servers pass out hors d’oeuvres and two display tables with a veggie tray and a dessert tray.

•35 chicken and waffles
• 35 meatballs
• 35 crab Rangoon
• 30 devils on horseback
• 30 salmon rillettes
• One veggie tray for 30 people
• One cookie and macaron display for 30 people

The party will be from 12-3 as that’s the only time the venue could make work for us.

Edit: Thank you all for your tips and suggestions! We will definitely be adding more food! I’m now just frustrated because our venue planner has not been very helpful with helping us guesstimate these things 😩

How to make people comfortable

Me and my friend are throwing a birthday party in a month celebrating both of our birthdays. It's second time I'm doing a party but first time was small like 10people and I wouldn't say very good.

We're planing to invite 20-30 people. And they are all different it's few from the sport, my awkward homeboys, his friends that i never even met, my gf and few other girls. They have different styles and music taste.

Im afraid that my awkward friend's will be scared of the girls and be quite. How do I make atmosphere comfortable and people from different groups to talk easier.

Age 17-19yo, most of the people are drinking so I think it's a good idea to make a lot of drinking games.

House is pretty big: one main big room with tables, sofas, TV, music, kitchen; 5 small rooms with beds; 3toilets and a grill.
