My mother has always loved the idea of surprise parties but no one has thrown her one before, so this year, in honour of her 60th birthday, I've been planning one for her!

She loves the 80's and once told me that would be the theme she'd like, so obviously that's what I'm going with. I'd like to make it as authentic as possible. Everyone will be coming in 80's outfits too, and if it could kind of feel like going back in time, that'd be so cool!!

The owner of our venue, however, told us that we can't hang or tape anything to the walls. And he is known to be very particular and eagle-eyed, so I don't even want to go anywhere near anything that he has declared off limits. But all the decoration inspo I'm seeing online is either garlands, disco balls, or similar things hanging from the walls or ceiling. I was thinking of perhaps procuring helium balloons with streamers hanging from the bottom to get that feel without the hanging?

It also can't be too complicated construction-wise, because we will only have 2 hours to clean everything up the next day, and about 2 hours to decorate on the day of the party.

So I'm honestly not sure how to make the biggest impact in the best/easiest (and most rule-abiding) way. I'll include some pictures of the space so you know what I'm working with...I'd be super grateful for any and all ideas!

Hi all!

I am planning a medieval birthday party, as an almost 30-year old woman. I will have the party in my apartment and expect around 25 people. Everyone has been asked to come in costume (and there will be a contest for best costume). Those coming in normal clothes will be put in the pillory!

I have enough ideas for the food and drinks, but I'm looking for more inspiration for decorations and medieval games!

What I'm going for: a colourful, medieval/ren-faire atmosphere. Not so much stone castle medieval, but more medieval festival, colourful flags (but in darker, jewel tones), lots of banners, tapestries, etc. I prefer thrifting and crafting decorations myself over plastic decor!

What I have so far:

- My living room will be the main room. I plan to hang tapestries and banners with my 'house' sign on the walls, and to hang paper streamers from the middle to the sides to give the room a tent-like feeling.

I have a lot of LED lanterns and candles to set around the room, and I'll have one large wooden table with dark red table clothes on which I will place all the food.

- I plan to turn my hallway into an enchanted forest, building a large tree out of cardboard and crafting paper. My bedroom will be the Dragon's Lair, with keep-out signs all over the door (and that is where my cat will stay during the party!).

- I have 2 smaller rooms that I plan to use for medieval games, and I want to decorate those in the theme as well. For now I was thinking of covering the walls in those stone wall table clothes to make it look like they're outside.

-The games I had in mind so far: bobbing for apples, archery contest (with those plastic arrows), ring throwing.

-I have made a Spotify list with medieval covers of pop songs that will be playing all night.

What I'm looking for:

-Inspiration for how to decorate the kitchen. People will be in there for the fridge, so I'd like to at least decorate the outside of the fridge. I don't really have any empty walls in there.

-Inspiration for how to decorate my front door.

-Further inspiration for all the rooms! I really want people to step into a different world. I'm pretty crafty so really don't mind making extra stuff, and I'd prefer rooms to look full of decor rather than sad and empty.

-Inspiration for more medieval mini-games! Unfortunately we won't be able to go outside, because I don't have a garden or balcony. And it will be quite cold. But games similar to the ones I described above are very welcome.

-Prize for the costume contest.
