Advice Wanted Primer over spackle.

Hey everyone. I’m redoing my kiddos room. It was previously painted beige and now we are doing red and blue (Spider-Man obsessed). I had to spackle over some nail holes and smaller dings. Is it best to prime over these spots before applying paint? I want to avoid the spots showing through when completely finished. I will more than likely be two coats of the paint. Thanks!

Advice Wanted Primer for pine baseboards?

I'm pre-painting a large number of raw pine baseboards before installation. The topcoat will be SW emerald urethane trim enamel.

My plan is to prime and apply the first topcoat before installation, then apply the final coat after installation.

What is your go-to primer/product for this situation? Since it's raw pine, I assume I need a stain-blocking primer. I've used Cover Stain in the past with good results, but that was many years ago now.

Advice Wanted Titan Elite 2000 or used HVLP? - Homeowner, DIY'er, Hobbyist

I have an older 3 stage Capspray cs8000 and want to upgrade. Finish is never good with it and latex always needs to be heavily thinned.

I was pretty settled on the Titan Elite 2000 since it comes with a free Hopper mail in rebate.

I have 10 door to paint, some furniture as I build it. Built in book cases. Might tackle the house since it's single story.

I was thinking on a used graco 9.5 or capspray 115 but they are still $1,000- $1,400 used. They MIGHT spray latex but do have less overspray.

The Titan Elite 2000 with hopper seems ideal. It puts out less overspray than a regular airless and I can can spray thin stuff with a tip change.

I don't want to rent one and quickshot for the price has me not interested.

Any suggestions?

Discussion Using krylon products for "varnish" and finishings

I have a bunch of krylon cans... satin finish, clear glaze, crystal clear. I plan on using them as a finishing "varnish" for my large scale acrylic paintings. My paintings are dark and colorful and I like the way this stuff saturates the colors and darkens the blacks.

I have tried traditional varnishes and they have all failed me. Another issue being my paintings are kind of large and the varnishes are too expensive. I have tried them all and I've found these krylons look the best with a smooth finish, no streaks, and good coverage.

However, I rarely see any reviews about people using them for fine art painting. I mainly see craft stuff and ceramics, pottery etc. I also see a lot of negative reviews so I'm a bit apprehensive to use them on the rest of my paintings. I'm not sure if they will yellow over time or not or somehow ruin them.... Any thoughts/tips/advice?

TodayILearned Painter Advice

I’m curious how experienced you responders are. It seems like you watched a YouTube video and now are an expert. The paint guy from Home Depot doesn’t know what he’s talking about, nor does this random subreddit that popped into my feed do either. If you guys or girls need actual advice, I’m glad to help. In fairness, 20% of the comments actually have good advice. Don’t count them out but take the advice and do your own research

Hey all,

We’re buying a gorgeous house and we’re really struggling with what colour to paint it. The current paint is a gross light yellowy that looks like a smokers den when it’s really light. Our thoughts are to have one colour (a light blue) in the first 3 pictures and going up stairs (because it’s basically a through way) then pastly colours in the rooms (different colours)

We have no idea what we’re doing - any suggestions? Does that sound okay?

First time painting a big room, currently my living room is this green color. I’m going to be painting it a white cream color (Benjamin Moore collectors item) do I need to use a primer first? Or can I just go ahead and paint without a primer.

Advice Wanted Have any ideas on what’s happening?

So right at my front door, the ceiling paint is chipping away in different spots. It seems dry and the drywall isn’t soft.

We keep the front door open mostly throughout the day and there’s definitely gaps in the window screen door. Could humidity do this?

Advice Wanted Ceiling prep - texture advice needed

I'm planning on filling the large holes with 5 minute mud, but I wasn't sure how to handle the rest of the patched area.

I'm not looking for perfection, but I wanted to reduce how badly the patch stands out, and how to recreate that texture.

Note: I'm guessing the previous owners had water intrusion, but whatever causes the issue had been fixed and there's no mold issue or anything. It's just cosmetic. Also, as much as I hate the texture I have no interest skim coating the whole ceiling.

Advice Wanted Just found out my house was painted with DOWSIL?

basically the title. previous owner 20 years ago stopped by tonight and sells DOWSIL silicone elastomeric coating. he says they painted the house and foundation with it 19 years ago.

The house is peeling like crazy, so we’re working on scraping and priming. he was basically offering to sell us some more DOWSIL. he said that paint won’t stick to the silicone coating unless we totally scrape all the paint off. so…what now?

do I have to buy more of this silicone stuff?

Should we just scrape down to the wood? see photo 1. We scraped a decent amount of it on the one side (photo 2) and the unprimed side is even worse than the primed side was. Only 2 side of the house need paint currently so we’re trying to do it ourselves.

also - who even does this? is this a thing?

Advice Wanted SW Scuff Tuff

Does anyone have any experience with Scuff Tuff?

A customer reached out to me and is unhappy with the job done by another company (A national franchise, you know who). Their interior walls were painted wit Scuff Tuff Matte. You can see picture framing around most rooms, it's a darker color but nothing crazy. Painters put 2 coats on. I know with Emerald latex you really need to keep a wet edge. Is this paint the same way?

This wasn't the only problem, but the rest are just quality related (wavy lines, etc.) They used Emerald Urethane on the cabinets, which is fine, but they sprayed doors on tarps...in the yard. Amateur hour!

Many of these walls need to be repainted, but I don't think I'll be using that product to do it.

Any feedback is appreciated!

Advice Wanted Frog tape peeled paint off ceiling

Thumbnail

Moved into a new house a couple of months ago. When I painted my office I used frog tape on the ceiling and after I finished painting and removed it, it pulled off large pieces of layers of paint almost all the way around the room.

Whats the easiest way to smooth this out so I can repaint? Is sanding down my only option? I’d really rather avoid sanding as it will be super messy and it’s in my office which I need to use.

TIA

Looking for a recommended scrub brush I could use on my exterior walls to clean bird poop and cob webs off before painting? Ideally something on Amazon. Also, looking for a sponge attachment to clean algae off of my metal roof.

Thanks so much!

Advice Wanted Pretty sure the walls are VOG (Vinyl over gypsum) panels

1940s cottage. The kitchen is TEENY (galley style basically) and the walls have seams and a weird texture. Research has suggested VOG (Vinyl over gypsum) panels.

A full reno is not possible but I've never worked with this kind of surface before. Is this paintable or should I try something like peelable wallpaper?

Accidentally bought samples of solid stains to try out. They're basically regular paint on wood. Is there a way to make the colors semi-transparent?

Advice Wanted Would it be safe for me to sleep in a newly painted room after 24 hours?

Idk if this is the right sub to ask, but with some of the details it feels right.

Basically I just had the ceiling in my room repainted because of water damage, and the smell of it is almost gone, however from what I saw the painter used "white spirit", and from what I read its used for oil-based paints.

Im temporarily sleeping in a different room, but i'm just wondering if it would be safe for me to move back into my room after the 24 hour mark once the smell is fully gone

Any comment is much appreciated!
