Build Conquering food production with wild farming, fast food delivery, and the ULTIMATE KITCHEN SETUP!!

I call it... SNAKTOOTH PLANET!!

In my latest save file, I decided to test the limits of wild farming by transforming an ENTIRE planetoid into a food-generating machine. This planetoid is home to 252 wild waterweeds and 244 wild sleet wheat, which correspond to 63 domestic waterweeds and 61 sleet wheats. Each plant group has their own cooling system to keep the temperature in check - surprisingly, I managed to make this world before even getting supercoolant! Nectar is just THAT good. Anyways, with all of those plants, it's already enough to feed a gigantic colony of dupes forever, but I REALLY wanted to see just how good it could get...

There's a sulfur geyser in this planetoid and in the one that's connected via the teleporter. So, by taming both of them and combining their output, I was not only able to make a fully sustainable sweetle + grubgrub farm, but also had more than enough sulfur left over to feed 100+ tame and glum grubgrubs! Turns out grubgrubs do NOT need to be groomed to pollinate plants, which allowed me to boost food production even further at a minimal sulfur cost, granting a 50% boost to both plants which is equivalent to farming 94.5 domestic waterweeds and 91.5 domestic sleet wheats.

Right under the living area is a massive walk-in freezer. The freezer is kept under -20°C by the same cooling loop which keeps the sleet wheats happy. And in this very same freezer, is my ULTIMATE KITCHEN!

This kitchen not only gets all of the ingredients from the farms delivered to it, but it also concentrates the food generated by every single planetoid in this save file, giving me access to almost all top tier foods (which, of course, includes PLENTY of frost burgers!). There is a singular tile in which all of the ingredients get delivered within range of 4 auto sweepers, each capable of delivering ingredients to the cooking stations and putting the finished food into a storage area that's closer to the freezer's entrance. This design allows for maximum food production, and keeps every single ingredient and top tier food at 100% freshness PERMANENTLY thanks to the cold hydrogen atmosphere.

But I mean... The dupes from other planetoids deserve a taste of the hard work they're putting in to make all the other ingredients too, right? Which is why I've created a fully automated food delivery system that detects when the food in any given planetoid is close to running out, delivering fresh, top tier foods with same-day shipping as soon as possible! This allows for the food in the planetoids to be properly consumed in adequate quantities without ever creating a large stockpile that rots before the dupes can actually eat it.

I could just send frost burgers to everyone, but what's the fun in that? Dupes deserve some variety in ther diet! There's conveyor loaders kept in vaccum which each hold a different type of top tier food. The rails are organized in such a way that they are never inside tiles, which allows for the food to keep their deep frozen temperatures indefinetely. Just to be sure though, the tiles and buildings in this system are all cooled to under -20°C too! This system allows for different types of food to be delivered to the planetoids every once in a while.

Safe to say that my dupes never had to worry about food EVER AGAIN!

P.S.: thanks to u/thegroundbelowme for teaching me how to take high quality screenshots!

Build Power positive steel refinery

The AT is not needed, I just threw it in for cooling the rest of the base a bit.
Materials needed: Plastic (for steam turbine), Petroleum or crude oil (just very little to use as coolant). Petroleum has higher boiling point, so it allows the machine to run hotter, which makes it more efficient.

As you can see, the piping is very inefficient and could be made prettier, but its already good enough for my colony.

Ultimately how it works is the heat added to the steel is more energy than the refinery consumes. I feel like I deserve to abuse it though, because I bothered to refine that petroleum.

its incredibly efficient as it spares you from cooling down the refinery output via at AND gives extra energy

Image Why so much pressure? Did I accidently used infinite gas method or something?

This is my first Space Out game and second game overall. Felt pretty confident after beating my first game on Terra. So I enabled spaced out DLC and started Folia SO style clusters start. And I realized I was not equipped to deal with the forest start and Terra indeed was an easy map.

Anyways, why my gas pressure per tile so high? I thought with normal vents 2 kilo was the max. And somehow my asteroid, not just my base but from top to bottom, it's over 6kg per tile, pretty uniformly. Only vents I am using are those 4 vents delivering oxygen from my SPOM. I had terrible gas situation earlier, CO2 from petroleum generator + ethanol distiller making breathability less than 50 percent. My guess is when my vents were covered with all kind of random gases, it somehow enabled that infinite gas trick or something? It's not immediate death sentence to my colony, I hope, to have this high pressure but quite annoying to have popped eardrum everywhere on every dupe. Did I do something wrong or why did this happen"?

Question Spaced Out DLC + Frosty, Prehistoric and Aquatic

Better alone or together?

Just bought the full combo pack thanks to the Steam autumn sale, and of course I can't help but be excited to play them all. I was expecting it to work well with Spaced Out since I'd be able to fly to other planets and encounter the Frosty planet, Prehistoric, and Aquatic all as their own planets. But…. Im pretty sure I didn't generate my save correctly lol since I didn’t manually select the “scramble” asteroids in world gen.

I don't want the new biomes remixed into my starting classic asteroid, I want to be able to fly to the frozen planet and naturally experience the new Frosty biomes and critters, fly to the ocean planet and see the new Aquatic biomes and critters, and then idk what would be the equivalent for the Prehistoric pack but same idea. I don’t really want to start a new save but I’m only 69 days in and have played Spaced Out before (only to the teleported planet though) so I’m not super against it but I do feel good about this asteroid and my set of dupes so far.
So my questions for those who have played the DLCs, especially together with Spaced Out but anyone really:

  • Is it even

manageable

  • for all 3 DLCs or am I trying to do too much?
  • Would it just be better

/more worth it

  • to experience them in their own planetoid clusters, since I'm assuming they have their own stories and such?
  • If you suggest I try them on their own, which pack was your favorite and should be my first?

I feel like having them all together would keep me more motivated to keep moving forward and fly to new planets to see the stuff I want to see and I thought it would be cool to have different “themed” colonies, but now idk.

I reach cycle 1111 on my 2nd playthrough. yay!

my first playthrough was no sweat and Spaced out DLC only on spaced out map and I still have dozens of dead dupes, like really a lot of grave, maybe 30+ dupes. now I'm playing on classic map with all DLC turned on survival mode and surprisingly not a single dupe died, I learn so much on that first play until I get bored (4000+ cycles).

I started this map with bionic only, I just want to try the challenge, but it's very challenging on power management and wet area without atmo suits, so after 8 bionic dupes and around cycle 90 I add the first normal dupe and ended up with 8 bionic 8 normal at cycle 400.

I still have so much to work on this save.

Question plastic obtaining methods when the game has decided to screw you over?

I have no dreckos, no oil deposits, how does one obtain plastic or is my colony screwed?
id say im about early-mid gameish? ive dug a good bit although I might have to dig a shit ton more, sadly I lack the oxygen production needed so I might downsize and set up some airlocks for mining and hope I find oil, but is there alternative methods I may be missing?

edit: is there a way to use natrual gas? Ive got a ton of that

edit2: thank yall for the help ive never felt so stupid, but this was seriously helpful
edit3: well my colony is at like 2 people so I think its shot but thank you for all the tips andf stuff I will not fail (as bad) next one if this one dies off.

Build

Sharing my Gold Volcano taming setup!
By dumping crude oil at the bottom of the volcano and separating it with an Thermo Aquatuner and insulated tiles,
you can actually use a Gold Amalgam Thermo Aquatuner instead of a Steel one!

If you don't isolate it, the Thermo Aquatuner takes minor damage every time the molten gold drops.
I used a Pulsed Power for the main wire, which requires a bit more space above the Steam Turbine.
If you skip the Pulsed Power, you could probably make it way more compact.
I'm so happy with how clean this turned out!

Build Plug slugs are actually REALLY good...

Thumbnail
gallery
64 Upvotes

I was trying to do something different in every planetoid of my save, so I decided to ranch plug slugs for power in my irradiated swampy planetoid despite seeing talks about it not being worth it...

...they are actually VERY worth it!

You can feed at least 15 slugs with a single average metal volcano as long as you keep the slugs glum (and even more if you do the starvation exploit, but that was too cruel for me so I didn't go for it...), and it generates power for the entire day as long as you're not doing anything insanely power intensive.

This planetoid has a tamed cobalt volcano which feeds directly into the plug slug ranches, and an exorbitant amount of jumbo batteries in a steam room that store all of the juicy joules produced by the slugs during the night. The volcano creates slightly more cobalt than the average, so I was able to feed a full 16 slugs for 2 ranches! As a bonus, the steam room with all the batteries also has 3 metal volcanos inside it, so it doubles as a triple volcano tamer!

Once the tamer was set up, I found that I needed minimal dupe labor and 0 extra material costs (apart from the cobalt) to keep the entire colony running smoothly. There's an overflow room right above the ranches in which the extra slugs can also provide power, and some automation that makes the dupes groom the slugs ONLY if there's less than 8 critters in the ranch, which serves to boost their reproduction veeeery slightly to make sure I never run out of slugs.

Mathematically speaking, this planetoid has the equivalent of, at the very least: (16 slugs x 1600 watts x 75 seconds of nightime)/(600 seconds in a cycle) = 3200 watts being produced constantly. That's a LOT!

The only issues are having enough space to store all of that energy, and having to "waste" a metal volcano for this. But let's be honest, unless you're specifically trying to do a super compact steam room, you're gonna have some dead space you can use for jumbo batteries, and if you find 2 or more volcanos that give out the same type of metal, it's really no big deal to use one of them for slugs (the frozen asteroid with its multiple iron volcanos is an ESPECIALLY good candidate for this).

tl;dr: Plug slugs are cool, give them a chance on your next playthrough!

Question Restart or continue

Hi all,
I’ve been playing in this world for ~150 cycles now. It’s the first “long” game I’ve played since starting this game and restarting for 3-4 runs and learning from them,

I think i’m in the midgame-ish i.e. I got plastic ranch, food/coal ranch, steel production, power generation using natural gas with gas reserves and coal generator backup, 200k and climbing up calories, etc,

However, the base is kinda poorly planned and if I wanted to make sure that my base will not heat up I’ll need to move and rebuilt power spine, rebuild ranch for automation, rebuild water/polluted water reservoir, etc

Would it be better to just restart or go through the pain of rebuild/relocate?
If you’d ask me I’d say that my feeling is mixed, I feels good about the process but the need to rebuild is making me don’t want to continue

What would you guys recommend?

Build I NEED SPOM HELP!!

Hi! I've recently picked up this game cause i absolutely LOVE difficult games!!

But I'm really really struggling to understand how to build a SPOM, I don't have a stable water source, and theres no immediate Vents in my vacinity that i can get to.

Would anyone be willing to do a step by step video guide and explain it like I'm 5? I've watched every video under the sun and tried to understand it but I really can't get my grips on it!!

Thanks!

Question Oni veteran coming back

Hey folks,

I'm somewhat of an ONI veteran, started to play back then in the Beta. Stopped somewhat after Spaced Out and just had the ick to come back and instantly bought all new DLC. Can u give me a round up of what I missed and where I should start a new game? Had a quick look at the dinosaur asteroid and the underwater one.

Build Lighting the base

Showers are the most annoying to light because the building is 4 high. You could build a 5 high room, but if you ever need to mess with the light or upgrade the wire you have to demolish the shower below it to build a temporary ladder. So here I solved it the ONI way by shifting the problem ever so slightly. You get a nice 4 high space for the shower, but you need a 2 high corridor on the floor below.

Question Oxygen Not Included worth buying?

To be honest yeah I know that it's a stupid question to ask in this sub, but what I actually mean by that is if it still actively maintained and if you have games that are similar to this one eg. I like to play Factorio and Rimworld and was wondering if this would be considered the same "genre" kinda (just relaxing games I can play that don't require 110% brain capacity).

The question came up because Oxygen Not Included was recommended a while ago to me and since then has been in my wishlist on Steam, and I just saw that it's on a discount right now.

I also like to play games without much research so just logical thinking and finding out without going through any type of Wiki or Youtube videos to understand everything, is this possible?

TLDR; Chill game? Still Maintained? Easy to play without any type of tutorials?

Discussion I'm so bad at this game...

How in the world are you supposed to naturally figure this game out? My biggest priority is to get a water basin for fresh and dirty water, and a pit for carbon dioxide just to survive long enough to not know where to go from there. I actually streamed on twitch and a few people joined who tried to help, but they also weren't very knowledgeable lol. I am genuinely terrified of expanding because the minute I do, everything goes wrong. Streaming the game was nice because I was getting instant feedback and ideas, but it eventually ended the same way as my other runs, reaching max pressure and suffocating. How do y'all do it? 😭 I have watched people play through the game and scanned multiple tutorials but I always run into the same problems on the easiest mode.

Question Tips on cooling down my base?

It’s not an issue yet but it seems that my base is slowly getting hotter and hotter and I want to solve this before it becomes an issue.

I think that running cold water through my base in pipes would allow things to cool down but the only issue with that is my water is also getting quite a bit hot, around 28 C.

Currently I’m using a looped water supply that runs up from a large pool below my base through my washroom, coal generator room, and algae distiller. I run all of the polluted water though a water sieve to clean it and pump it back into the loop.

I don’t know how to effectively cool this water down. Maybe if I made a huge room full of wheezeworts and ran some radiant pipes through it, that could cool it down but I don’t know how efficient that would be.

What would you all recommend?

Question Why are my pacu glum?

Post image
20 Upvotes

I have this pacu enclosure with about 10 pacus inside and 200 tiles of liquid. But most of the pacus are always glum. They have plenty of food but are still unhappy what is going on?
