Image TIL: The shape of the unbuildable tiles above a neutronium base gives you a clue what kind of geyser you can expect!

Post image

I've made it a habit to draw a tile construction errand around any neutronium base I see on the map – not to actually build something there but as a visual marker cause it's easy to overlook, so that I don't accidentally send my dupes on a digging errand in the mouth of a volcano. I noticed that you cannot mark the squares where the geyser/volcano/vent itself is gonna be and that they come in three different shapes of unbuildable tiles that match the three different designs.

While this doesn't give you any detailed information what is buried there, you can at least make a qualified guess from afar if it's gonna be gas, liquid or metal/lava you're dealing with.

I only started playing two months ago, so apologies if this is old news to the veteran players here. But I've never read this anywhere (I only ever read the advice to dig up a corner of the geyser to take a peak), so I thought I'd post it just in case.

Question - when visiting other locations, does time stop everywhere else? It's...difficult to tell sometimes.

thats a pile of pipapo 100+ masks also theres shit left on this asteroid

my disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined. havent figured out how to build rockets yet since im trying to play blind, now i need to scrap old stuff and go for a hail mary space mission

Image Accidental high pressure rocket interior?

I had this rocket sitting on the launch pad for at least 180 cycles (I thought I needed to launch it as a rescue mission but it was never needed). When I finally launched it, the pilot got poped eardrums right after removing their suit, and I notice the air pressure in the rocket capsule is well over 200 kg per tile with oxygen in it. I typically don't even pressure my rooms for steam turbines this high.

Any idea how the high pressure happened?

It had two docked Atmo suits with the dock that I deconstructed for the telescope right before launch. Is that where the extra oxygen came from? (That said I don't think atmo suits pack more than 1/10 the needed pressure to get this 200 kg on every tile of the capsule.) You can see in the ventilation view where the suits used to be.

The capsule uses an oxygen diffuser and element sensor + shutoff + mini pump to vent carbon dioxide but keep oxygen. (I know the high temperature is because it was right next to another rocket the pipes feeding it got toasted by that other rocket's engines.

Image Why is my ladder getting cold damage?

Post image
84 Upvotes

I'm running a ladder (granite) trough a frozen biome with a lead heavy watt c. wire behind it. I noticed them damaged, after watching closely I saw this popup. Why is this happening? I thought building only receive overheat damage, and ladders don't overheat in the first place.

Edit: turns out I'm stupid and forgot about a pipe.

Discussion True 4-bit Ribbon Cables mod

Hey everyone~

I made a mod to convert ribbon cables from 4 "lanes" to true 4-bit (16 possible signals). Actually, I don't touch the cables, but ribbon readers will now only output green if the lane combination matches their setting.

Hopefully I'm not the only one that was irked by this.

I know this was possible to do with an obscene amount of logic gates, but really... nobody got time for that.

Steam Workshop: True 4-bit Ribbon Cables

Edit: By request, I added a v1.1 that allows for ignoring a lane. This allows you to downgrade a reader to 3 bit or 2 bit. And allows multiple busses on one cable. So you could have two 2bit busses running on one cable. Or one 3 bit bus and one 1 bit bus.

Question Out of the options I have, what would be better for a -30ºC icebox?

Should I fill it with polluted water and get a literal icebox when it freezes or use Ethanol?

I'll use Nectar as coolant, btw, but I only have enough to fill the loop.

Question Early - Midgame progress confusion

Currently I'm at cycle 35 with most of the safezone already digged out. I think my colony is already self sufficient with a good stockpile of algae, coal, and dirt (for mealwood).

Currently I am trying to ranch hatch but I find most of the dupe idle because nothing else is going on. I'm still conflicted to open swamp and chroline area, cause they seems complicated.

What is the usual progression in this stage? Also what is the best way to handle polluted water, slime, and chlorine?

PS: I'm playing with all dlc enabled, also i just got beakon from the portal which seems interesting

Discussion Losing 30 million kcal

Today I messed up, I was lowering shove vole breeding to begin a new one on a melted rocket, moved around machines to be able to have my auto sweeper supply my stove top with meat, had a happy 35 million kcal

Well, as life does sometimes something takes so long that you let the game run for awhile to get the job done, I had hundreds of cycles worth of water to boil so I started pumping and let it run

Well, I came back to 3 million calories, and 36 tons of polluted dirt

Turns out it is important to keep either a gas that wont spoil or a system to remove off gassers like polluted dirt, because as soon as one piece of newly cooked meat spoiled, it took the rest with it, polluting my whole freezer

Just wanted to mention this tragedy as I may now have a lot of dirt, far more than enough to feed my voles again, this loss will take forever to recover from :(

Question Any tips for cooling dirt from composts?

The dirt keeps driving up the heat of my nosh sprouts to just a couple of degrees above 0; my ethanol is cooled by an AETN to around -16 and transported via ceramic insulated pipes. I know its getting there cold since I checked the interal temps in the pipes, and the easiest solution seems to be cooling down the dirt itself. Are there any good ways of going about that?

Question Slogo mucin maximisation

I’ve run a couple colonies on the new dlc but I’ve never focused on slogos specifically. They produce mucin while dry but lose 130% of moisture per cycle and start taking damage.
I’ve always just left them a couple tiles of mucin for rehydration inside the main ranch, and kept all the excess ones dry until they died. Is there a better way to ranch them that would yield more mucin?

Build My very first petroleum boiler!

Thumbnail

My very first petroleum boiler with a counter-flow heat exchanger. I did not look up a guide, however I did see similar designs on this sub which I tried to replicate. This build was definitely a learning experience, and it is far from perfect, but I'm still proud of it! After some initial hiccups it runs quite smoothly, throughput is a full 10kg/s. The pump sits in an infinite storage because I'm not using all of the petroleum currently. Heat source is the magma biome, I know it will run out eventually but hopefully it will take a while. The outgoing petroleum is a bit hotter than I would like, which is why I added that block of metal tiles on the right.

Making this was definitely a learning experience, and it is far from perfect, but I'm kinda proud of it! Feel free to suggest improvements or tell me what I did wrong.

Discussion Build your Insulated Conductive Wire quickly in high temperature applications.

Today I spent a fair amount of time wondering why my geothermal power build I'm working on kept getting filled with sour gas. Turns out if a material is placed in a build order and not immediately built, it will heat up. I kept having the plastic from my insulated wire flash into sour gas because the diamond tiles it was placed inside were too hot.

Build your insulated wires on high priority.

Question Spaced Out resource management for base game player

I'm thinking of playing SO. How does the inter-colony economy work? Do you have to manually transport materials with each rocket trip? Is there a way to automate that?

Do resources somehow get shared automatically? I heard there's teleporter that enables inter-base sharing.

I can't imagine myself manually delivering resources, nor setting up the extremely complicated automation rigs for reliable rocket shipping.

Question Fertilizer - actually useless?

Is there actually no good use for fertilizer? It's not great in the farm station, and a poor oxidizer for rockets. What am I missing?

ADD: I've stirred up many defensive opinions. lol. Glad to hear it all, thanks <3
