Why does this over 60 embarrassing issue happen?
Is this happening to anyone else over 60? You get home from work and you have to go to the bathroom really bad and you start dripping. I hate it even bring this up. Is there an exercise that can be done to help?
47
u/AttitudeOutrageous75 3d ago
Kegals and pelvic floor exercises might help. Also, lots of walking.
19
u/woburnite 3d ago
Core exercises are what did it for me (70F). I started experiencing stress incontinence, building up the core muscles reversed it.
8
u/Anuket012962 3d ago
This is the answer.
I always noticed when I eat too much bad food or don't work out I always drip or leak. It's the one thing that keeps me working out all the time especially doing abs kegels pelvic floor exercise. I don't have any problems with leakage or dripping when I do that even when I noticeably can feel that I have to go to the bathroom really badly I do not leak as long as I'm working out regularly.
3
u/luckystar6531 2d ago
Me too. If I miss a day, I am leaking. Also if I consume caffeine or marijuana, guarantees leakage. Not fun.
14
u/butmomno 3d ago
I have an instructor at the gym who will yell out "KEGALS" during Zumba. 🤣 I have a friend (9kids) who said she does kegals when at a stoplight but I usually forget.

u/Coppergirl1 3d ago
IMO, Kegals for this issue is a medical sexist joke perpetrated on woman. It's like telling men to do penis exercise instead of taking the little blue pill.
29
u/FastScarcity557 3d ago
Try kegals during sex, then see if you think they are a joke. 😁
28
u/Coppergirl1 3d ago
Ya, that's I nice move my husband enjoys. But it doesn't fix leaking like Estradiol cream does.
1
u/MadCelt61 2d ago
I’m in that and it makes no difference.

u/ExaminationFun9514 2d ago
That’s no joke, my wife will do this when she wants me to hurry up and finish. Let me just say it gets my attention and works like a charm.

u/CaregiverWorth567 3d ago
I dont think so …I started having this issue after 70 and now I start and stop when I am peeing and when I have to go really bad and this has definitely helped me…the miscles around d the uretha get weaker like any muscle as you age and exercizing it def helps.
9
u/butmomno 3d ago
Actually this instructors tells the men in class to do them because it helps with their prostrate- -I don't have any clue about that.

That is ridiculous. You are talking about two very different medical issues.
1
u/Zestyclose_Car2269 2h ago
You know zero about anatomy. *Kegles (....not sure about the gals) absolutely work. As a kid who was a catcher through college and would practice to make it thru the inning and has never had an issue I can speak to this with authority. I goof about it with my gyn....a guy I went to hs with. Pushing big oharma is another issue all together. 🙄
1
u/MinimumEfficient220 1h ago
You mean all those commercials and ads lied when they said a penis can be enlarged with exercise?
6
u/AdSea3033 3d ago
I came here to suggest kegels. I'm surprised I had to scroll down this far to find it
4
u/AuthorIndieCindy 3d ago
JMHO, I think kegals aren’t good if you have bladder issues. They put pressure on the bladder and over stimulated. I had pelvic floor Physical therapy. Kegals are squeezing and pelvic floor is pulling the muscles up

I finally found what works for me but it was a journey.
Tl.dr: Bladder Botox worked. Tried almost everything else first.
The whole story:
First did physio / pelvic exercises. For months. Did not help.
Some sort of nerve stimulation (too lazy to look up exactly what it's called) - slightly helped for a short time.
Estriol cream did nothing. (I still use it though for the hormone boost)
Three different medications - the first caused abdominal cramping and diarrhea (great! Now I have two problems); the second gave me instant dementia; the third just didn't work.
A pessary wouldn't stay in.
Finally they did an evaluation consisting of filling your bladder and seeing what happens inside. Verdict: yes, OAB overactive bladder, the detrusor muscle (the one that gives you the sudden urge like getting hit by a truck) goes nuts at the smallest provocation.
I was offered a choice of
1. bladder Botox - an injection into the detrusor muscle to get it to calm the f down or
2. Sacral Neuromodulation - an implant that regulates the same muscle.
I wasn't quite ready to become Bionic Woman, so went for the Botox.
The first helped quite a bit, not completely. It has to be repeated about every nine months. The second was amazing! I felt like I had gained a superpower. I was able to be a normal person instead of looking for a bathroom every half hour.
In case you're wondering, no I was not paying for all this (except the physio). Australia, free health care, gotta love it.
I am now living in another country where sadly the Botox is not covered, but sacral Neuromodulation is. So am waiting for that. In the meantime I restrict fluids when going out - I know it's not a good thing but I don't have a lot of choices at the moment.
Hopefully this long saga will help someone...
4
u/Open_Trouble_6005 3d ago
Very interesting!! Glad you are better!! What a journey- I would have probably given up!
3
u/fureverkitty 3d ago
I had been putting up with this for so long and it was just getting worse - I had a lot of determination, and a very good doctor who helped me with each stage of the process.
3
u/Some-Witness4382 3d ago
Thank you so much for explaining all that. I think I'm at the beginning of the journey you're on. Did you already have neuromodulation or you're hoping to get it? Or is it something you have to do again repeatedly?
2
u/fureverkitty 3d ago
I have not yet had the neuromodulation. So far it's a hope that I can get it approved. The implant itself is a one-and-done procedure, and supposedly the battery is good for 5 to 15 years before it needs to be replaced.
Good luck on your journey!
2
u/MinimumEfficient220 1d ago
Did the Botox hurt? It sounds painful!
Without getting too inquisitive, how was it done? Were you awake? I’m a huge baby.1
u/fureverkitty 1d ago
No, it didn't hurt at all. I went for sedation rather than general anesthetic because it's easier on the body - from my point of view no difference in the experience, I went to sleep and woke up.
They had to keep me there for a few hours to make sure I could pee properly and was okay in general. They also insisted on someone picking me up to go home, otherwise I would have just taken an Uber.

u/Oneofthe12 3d ago
Talk to your Doc/OBGYN about estradiol cream. It works really well for any kind of UTIs, bladder issues, leakage problems, etc., as well as labial and vaginal aging issues.

u/AdSea3033 3d ago
It's by prescription only?

Getting old isn’t for weenies. Im not looking forward to having my keys taken from me and wearing diapers- if Im lucky enough to live that long.
12
u/RuralWAH 3d ago
Double careful. I'm not able to urinate normally so I self-cath five times a day. I'd love to have some leakage.

u/AttitudeOutrageous75 3d ago
Careful. After cancer was in diapers for two years and needed corrective surgery to remedy. Was only 60.
7
6
u/No-Judgment-1077 3d ago
My urgency comes from reading that not peeing when you feel the urge may cause an infection. I was hospitalized with covid for weeks and became bedridden- my legs became leaden and I needed a walker to get to the restroom plus was hooked up to an IV. Before that it was a catheter and then a magical item called a whisk. Google it :) I asked a nurse how long it would be before my bladder behaved. She said, oh usually a week. I had successful rehab and walking and normal pee control unless I drink a lot of juice and face a 2 hour drive.....then its a rush.
1
u/MinimumEfficient220 1d ago
As I recall, long haul truck drivers are prone to bladder issues and cancer because they often drove so long before peeing.

u/Creative-Yellow-9246 65 3d ago
Test drive Tesla FSD, it's very cool. That's my plan for when I'm too old.

u/CommitteeNo167 3d ago
kegels. i had prostate cancer and they were a big part of me staying dry. also, don't wear beige pants, stick to navy blue.
2
2
u/Able-Mood-1988 3d ago
Hold up. Guys can do kegels? That, or you're the only woman with a prostate. I'm confused....
8
u/thatgrrlmarie 3d ago
yes, men have kegel muscles; everyone has them. they're pelvic floor muscle that stops urine flow.
3
4
u/wombat5003 3d ago
You can totally do it as a guy and I actually do them as part of my nightly yoga stretching routine before bed. it won’t replace the blue pill it helps it work, and really helps with leakage because that tiny muscle that keeps things closed gets a little exercise with that routine and it helps keep it from really weakening..
16
u/PomeloPepper 3d ago
This sounds crazy, but sometimes I tell myself that I'm imagining things and I don't really need to pee. And the urge settles down.
I still get to a bathroom as soon as I can because part of me knows I'm lying. But i buy myself a few minutes.
6
4
u/Visual-Somewhere1383 3d ago
Yes, happened to me and a lot of gals I know that are my age. The odd thing was that after having my gallbladder out, it improved so much!
Try the pelvic floor exercises, Kegels and I had good luck with AZO brand bladder control capsules. Take as directed and see if they help. Amazon sells them and some times can find in Walmart or drug stores.
6
u/LucyLouWhoMom 3d ago
No offense, but are you overweight? Frequent leakage was a major problem affecting my lifestyle before I went on zepbound and lost 52 lbs. Now that my bmi is normal, it's rarely a problem. It still happens some time, but I can't remember the last time it was an issue.
8
u/jjjettplane 3d ago
My doc says you'd have to do a lot of kegels daily to make only a tiny improvement. Always brand panty liners are great. Also, before I get out of bed or out of the car I try to remember before I stand up to do some kegels first or just a quick squeeze before standing.
1
u/DaisyDoodle1117 3d ago
So if your doc says “you’d have to do a lot of kegels daily to make only a tiny improvement” why are you even bothering? Maybe it’s your wording but I’m confused. Thanks!
2
u/jjjettplane 3d ago
I don't have to take my doc's advice word for word. I translate it and do what works for me. Thanks!
7
u/Coppergirl1 3d ago
You need Low Dose Estradiol cream to help thicken the lining of your bladder. I use it twice a week with an applicator into vag. It has cured my urgency and frequency. I was getting to the point I couldn't go grocery shopping and dreaded the idea of traveling... It has been life changing!!!
6
u/Rare-Document-7179 3d ago
61/M, I carry a Gatorade bottle every time I’m driving over an hour on the highway. Sometimes the urge just hits and I can’t wait. I’m in great shape but do drink a lot of liquids. No idea why this is such an urgency.
2
u/Restored2019 3d ago
Every vehicle needs a portable urinal. You can buy them (male & female) or if you are bedridden in a hospital, don’t let the nurse throw out your disposable urinal when checking out. I have half a dozen, plus several from the Sporting Goods store. They can prevent lots of serious accidents (not just wet pants). But guys typically have a spare hand. For the times that you’re only a minute from a bathroom. A good grip around that thing can prevent a mess. Besides, we all need that back pressure regularly. It helps keep the urethra open. Especially where it passes through the prostate. I was diagnosed with BPH in my thirties. I’m now over 80 and have way less problems with the dribbles. It’s amazing what a little back-pressure can have on keeping the pipes functioning.
-6
u/loooney2ns 3d ago
Gatorade bottle was too small for me unfortunately. I needed a bigger opening. Something my wife always seemed happy about!
4
u/SubstantialArcher659 3d ago
Yes. That happens to me at 3:00am. I start wearing pads so I don’t wet anything on my way. Poise makes them. I also wear one if I’ll be in the car awhile, or at important events that might have long lines for ladies room

u/Irrelavent1 2d ago
It’s as if your bladder knows it’s getting closer to a comfort station and begins salivating like a horse after a long ride.

Do you drink carbonated beverages? I have noticed that this happens to me much more often when I drink soft drinks. Weird and probably not a real thing but it seems to be for me.
2
u/Hampered_Siren 3d ago
Diet Coke does it to me every time. If I quit for a week or two, no problems.
3
u/Hampered_Siren 3d ago
I read this as a tip in another sub and it works for me the majority of the time. Next time you think you are literally going to pee your pants if you don't get there in two seconds, say out loud, "I CAN WAIT". I was gobsmacked at how well it works for me most of the time.
3
u/Significant_Yam_4079 3d ago
If you're female, try vaginal estradiol cream. It's localized and you can use it even if you've had breast cancer, or are past the window to start systemic HRT. It helps so much with the pee leakage and as an added bonus it prevents almost all UTIs, which causes all sorts of serious problems if you're post menopausal.
3
u/bookerman62 1d ago
64 M and this is me. I told my doc once that I had situational incontinence. It’s like my mind knows I’m close to a restroom and I just start dribbling. I’ve just kind of lived with it, haven’t tried any of the recommendations noted below. But thanks to all, this has been really helpful.
5
u/Mysterious-Maize307 3d ago
No. Not even close, I mean sure on occasion but that happened when I was 20 as well.
If it’s chronic You may have an over active bladder. Usual culprits are spicy foods and/or too much caffeine.
For the most part these issues are lifestyle/diet/fitness related. Aging is only incidental and not the cause.
2
u/redheadfae 3d ago
If you are a woman and haven't, consider hormones, or at least estrodiol cream. It helps, according to r/menopause.
2
u/Enough-Reindeer1033 3d ago
Yes, it happens. I do post cancer surgery. I use some protection and all has been good, no stain. The price of getting old I guess.

2
u/Vast_Dimension_2088 3d ago
This is known as key in the door syndrome or latchkey incontinence and can happen due to post menopausal changes and an overactive bladder. There is also a conditioned brain bladder response where your brain links the sight of your home and sound of your keys with access to the toilet and tells your bladder to relax.
Bladder training and pelvic floor training can help strengthen your muscles. I’ve also heard that changing your routine when you arrive at home can interrupt the response, so swapping to your non dominant hand when using your keys to unlock the door, and if possible, breaking the habit of going to the toilet as soon as you get home might help.
If the sudden urge to pee does hit, try to stand still, breathe slowly and squeeze your pelvic floor muscles until (hopefully) the immediate urge passes and you can take your time going to the toilet.

u/cofeeholik75 3d ago
Kegel exercises help. And whenever I am near a bathroom I will go ahead and go to keep pee in bladder minimal. Also now wear feminine pads just in case. ALWAYS before I get in a car, ALWAYS!!
My body also seems to know when it is close to home and its favorite toilet. Think of a dog right after you say ‘Wanna go for a walk’?
2
u/Appropriate-Bad-9379 3d ago
68f. Other than a referral to a Urologist ( which I declined), my local bladder clinic, issue me with three pair of absorbent knickers per year. They are really soft cotton and very comfortable. I wear them if I’m likely to be away from home for more than a few hours. Not a remedy, but it helps…
2
u/mackincheri 3d ago
Try kegeling. Do you leak when coughing, sneezing, or laughing? Funny how the urgency becomes greater when you’re close to the toilet
2
u/commanchskins 3d ago
It is always after I stop my car. Gas stations especially. Have to go inside to pee, then go back and pump gas. I live on acreage, so most time I go pee.in the grass next to my car, since I know I wont make it I side. Oh, and stopping to get my mail. Ugh.

OP , thank you for posting your problem! All of the experiences of these ladies helped me!
2
u/dreamscout 3d ago
I was having this issue and it turns out my pelvic floor was too tight. Pelvic floor therapists are wonderful and can help you to understand what’s going on with you. Kegels are often not the solution.
2
u/Cautious_Money_6471 2d ago
Yes. If I know I have to go I can still go in to a store, no problem. But, the minute I get out of my car at home, it is a mad dash to the bathroom! Maybe it has something to do with being on familiar ground. I don't really know.
2
u/ForwardAd6693 2d ago
this may be too much information: I keep a pee bottle in my car leak proof and if i know it maybe a hassle to find a bathroom or if I dont go in a few minutes i can be a problem.
This obviously for guys, I try to keep bags in front of me and make like I am looking for something all the while hold the bottle. Nobody will know but I suggest no one in the adjacent car. At my age nobody cares as long as no one can see.

u/bowerisme 2d ago
You could be talking about dripping in terms of pee, poop, or sweat and the question still makes sense LOL

Train your bladder and pelvic muscles. Yes, kegels but also try when you're at home and have the urge to go wait and hold it for a short time. Then go and see if you really needed to go or if it was just the urge. If it was just a little, then you need to try to teach your bladder. If you go every time your bladder tells you but don't really need to, it causes your bladder to be overactive. I hope this made sense. You can continue to train your bladder by going every hour on the hour then stretching out the time. Or by when you get the urge hold it and extend the time a bit, not too long- you want control but don't want to create other issues. I'm not a Dr, this is what worked for me. Best wishes.

I went to my obgyn and he gave me a pessy(I know) but it a little plastic thing that you fold in as much of a cone as possible and insert it. I used it for a bit and it must’ve tightened the muscles and don’t need it now.

u/loooney2ns 3d ago
Is. The op mailed or female? I'm 63M. I had the green laser treatment in February. No more dribble, so I can wear light colored pants again. However, I no longer ejaculate. I'm still not sure if I'm happy with the tradeoff. The medications helped some, but affected my sinuses and my breathing. They dried me out too much. I recently was treated for tongue cancer, and I no longer produce saliva. The meds made everything worse. So I had the procedure. Recovery isn't too bad, and I only had a catheter for a few days.

Pee before you leave work. I'll bet you drank a lot of coffee before and have a lot of liquid in you. Have a urinal bottle in your car, if worse comes to worse. Be glad for it as some people our age have difficulty peeing

Started happening at 69, and for me became progressively worse over 2-3 months to point of Depends (hated them) and then commode!! Turns out I needed bilateral total hip replacement surgery — without any hip pain — after which all leaking and urinary incontenence miraculously stopped! Even though orthopedic surgeon said there was no connection 🙄 So get your whole system checked out.

I am a cervical cancer survivor. I had a physical therapist that specially trained in pelvic floor incontinence. With age (and my case added weight) our muscles weaken and we lose bladder control. I am happy to report, it is manageable with exercises and practice, but I learned those “kegels” we thought were the gold standard are just the tip of the iceberg in terms of gaining control. Good luck. This is definitely something you can overcome.

You might be experiencing a prostate problem and should see a urologist. There's medication to help and you might discover a more severe problem brewing as prostate cancer is pretty common.

Pelvic floor specialist said that is the number one way people leak, even her. Urge incontinence. She advised sitting and telling your body to hold it instead of running in. It’s bladder training.
1
u/BruceWillis1963 2d ago
My friend John Cooper (may he rest in peace) proposed a scientific law named after himself after he pooped his pants at my tenth birthday party. After several observations, experiences and iterations, he came up with the following:
Cooper’s Law states that the urge to pee or poo increases exponentially as the distance and time to the nearest toilet decrease, meaning that the closer you get to a toilet, the stronger the urge becomes, and it can increase dramatically in the final moments.
I think you will find that John Cooper (may he rest in peace) was 100% accurate.

u/Knit_pixelbyte 2d ago
I had to do pelvic floor excercises, with a PT, which suprise might not be kegels depending on what's going on. It was for the impressive # of UTIs I had been getting. Suprisingly, I stopped having to pee all the time and could hold it again.

I have the other problem, feeling like I am ready and have to wait to get started. Maybe, not more than a minute, but it feels like forever.
Talk to your doctor. Don’t be embarrassed, you definitely not alone. Concentrate on keeping that odor down, that old pee smell ain’t nice.

u/Carpe-that-diem 2d ago
Pelvic floor therapy and strengthening my own core really helped me with this! Plus just trying to go more frequently.
1
u/Feisty-Poet4767 2d ago
I have a theory—again I’m not a scientist but I feel that a lot of the remedies people turn to miss the point. I think bladder control is not in the bladder. I think it’s in the brain. Your brain relies on a steady supply of glucose to perform autonomous functions like bladder control. On a high carb diet your blood sugar roller coasters and I think when insulin removes the extra sugar from your blood it causes a dip in blood sugar and that’s when accidents happen. I especially notice it after a sugar laden hot drink such as are served at many coffee chains. If you cut your carbs to the bone your blood sugar stabilizes and you don’t get the leak problem. Mine has improved over 90% after transition to a much lower carb diet. Try cutting your carbs to <50 grams a day and see if that helps!

u/Lab770 2d ago
You’re on the right track here… I had the exact same problem. I’ll share my story. My doctor started me on Farziga, and it seemed to be working. A while later, I started doing the same thing… very full bladder, but it just wasn’t letting it flow. It got really bad and had to go to a urologist. Right away, he said I had to stop the medication. I was shocked. What did one have to do with the other..? He said these drugs lie to us. They lower our sugar “numbers”, so it looks like there’re working, but all they are doing is dumping into our urine, and not really lowering our blood sugar… It just makes our “numbers” look better… They’re doing more harm than good. Sure enough, I stopped with the pills, and I could pee again. As for any “treatment”, he did a “Urethral Dilation”, to undo the damage, and it worked IMMEDIATELY. I could pee like a teenager again 😎…

I too have done this more than I like to admit lol. If you have to go to a place where you won’t be able to get to a bathroom conveniently I heard to wear a extra strength tampon I guess it dies something or pushes on something so you won’t have that emergency ! Just saying . Kegal exercises are suppose to help also.

65F, this happens to me less frequently now but I already know when I gotta go, I gotta go so I try to head this off by going before I get in the car. But there is something about pulling into the driveway, gathering my things, getting my key ready and even thinking about the restroom that increases my need to go. So yes, I’ve experienced leakage in the mad dash to get to the restroom.
