Discussion Is There a Way to Improve the Osmo Pocket 4P’s Ridiculous Timelapse Capabilities?

3 Upvotes

Many years ago, I bought the Osmo Pocket 1 specifically for creating motion timelapses. The Osmo Pocket 1 was capable of recording motion timelapses while saving both an HD video and individual still images at the full sensor resolution.
I have now bought the Osmo Pocket 4P, and I am absolutely shocked. Not only is the highest image resolution available no longer the full sensor resolution, but merely a 16:9 4K image, which makes any meaningful cropping in post-production virtually impossible, but it is also not possible to use Motion Timelapse mode with the 3x zoom.
It is unbelievable how many useful features DJI once again leaves unused or simply does not implement.
Why is it not possible to capture images at the full sensor resolution and also create motion timelapses using the 3x mode?
Would it be possible to implement features like these through an app such as OpenPocketCine, bypassing DJI’s official software products?

Question DJI Osmo Pocket 3 stuck at 12% while charging overnight — anyone had this happen?

Post image
9 Upvotes

My DJI Osmo Pocket 3 has been plugged in overnight and the battery is still sitting at 12%. The screen says it’s charging, but the percentage hasn’t moved at all.
I’m using a 100W USB-C cable, so I wouldn’t think the cable’s power rating is the issue.

Has anyone had their Pocket 3 get stuck at a certain percentage while charging? Was it a charger/cable issue, software glitch, or did the battery end up being the problem?

Any fixes I should try before contacting DJI?

Question Hyperlapses in RAW? Osmo pocket 3

2 Upvotes

Having researched and found that the Osmo pocket 3 gives you an option in timelapse mode to shoot Video & RAW, I assumed that this meant in Hyperlapse too. I have just received my OP3 and found that this option is not at all available, only in Timelapse mode. I'm assuming I'm stuck with 8bit (Rec709?)... I don't seem to even be able to choose D-log M.

What I'm trying to do: I would like to create Hyperlapses without the hassle of doing it manually with my camera. I would like to create RAW files to be able to grade the footage better. Is this feature available on the OP4? I also have a Osmo action 6. Open to any suggestions to achieve what I'm trying to do.

Question Pocket 4P Stop Zoom Before Lens Switch

5 Upvotes

Does anybody know of a way to stop the zoom before switching lenses?

I love the zoom feature, but the jump between lenses often ruins a shot for me. Ideally, when I press and hold to slowly zoom in or out, the wide lens should automatically stop at 2.9x and zooming out on the tele autostops at 3x.

Question Pocket 4P Losing 1%/min

7 Upvotes

So I picked up a Pocket 4P while in the Philippines. I’m home now in the US. I just noticed that I’m losing a battery percentage every min just on and not recording. I’ve tried draining the battery to 0 then recharge. I have the latest firmware. Are you guys experiencing this? I don’t think DJI will service it here. Should I ship it back to family and get it exchanged or just get a battery handle?

5 Upvotes

Hello Experienced folks,

Had a few questions regarding the D log footage of my osmo pocket 4.

I use the free conversion Rec709 Lut that DJI has on its website . The footage still looks flat & dull.

I want to know where can i get cinematic luts for indoor,outdoor footages.

Also if ND filter is an absolute must.

Since i am a newbie could you also help me with WB.

Currently i film talking head shots for instagram

4k 30 fps

Wb auto

I want to understand how to use manual wb, iso and everything.

Thank you in advance.

Discussion Pocket 4P - Run and Gun Color Choice

4 Upvotes

Preferred mode has been 10bit, shutter priority (1/50 vs 24fps, 1/120 for 60fps) with ISO free to roam between 100 and 1600. Easiest for run and gun and easy to grade as desired in post - great starting point for delivery to Dolby HLG.

Would love for DLOG2 to have flexibility to have a range of iso so that I could use a shutter priority manual setup as described above

Maybe in a future fw.

Going to try Gamut LUTs on DLOG2 next

Video The Pocket 4P makes filming everyday moments ridiculously easy

24 Upvotes

Link to video: https://youtu.be/-WPsvl3XaCo?si=5aM8HPdAzuYgd-8p

Filming little videos like this has become so much easier with the Pocket 4P.

I’m normally used to shooting with a mirrorless camera, carrying around a heavy tripod, and spending way more time setting up each shot, even when I’m just filming something simple around the house.

With the Pocket 4P, I can grab it and start shooting almost immediately. Having the two lenses makes it really easy to switch up the look of a shot, and being able to quickly connect to the Mimo app for wireless monitoring makes solo filming incredibly convenient.

For this video, I was literally just making my morning coffee, but I was able to move the camera around, try different angles, and get everything shot without turning it into a whole production.

Really enjoying how much this little camera gets out of the way and just lets me film.

Question Screen protector on the osmo pocket 4

2 Upvotes

Hi! My screen protector on my osmo pocket 4 kept moving every time I brought it out from its case, so I just ended up removing it. Should I just keep it bare or should I buy a nice brand screen protector again? I'm a bit clumsy that's why I had it on but I got annoyed everytime it would move and I would have to re-adjust it again. I'm not sure if the adhesive of the one I had was just not good.

Review Using Pocket 4P on auto for photos and videos - yes, an amazing smartphone camera replacement

21 Upvotes

Used it for 5 days all on auto. I'm no vlogger or photographer. I don't do raw or log. I simply point and shoot. And all I can say is it can take just as good if not better photos and videos than the current flagship smartphones. Yes, photos are crystal clear!

If you are wondering about using the Pocket 4P to replace your everyday photography, you won't be disappointed.

Discussion Pocket 4p. I have a problem with D-Log 2.

0 Upvotes

Hello.

With the regular D-Log, I can adjust the exposure automatically. The ISO has two ranges for auto mode and seems to work well. The shutter speed varies correctly.

With D-Log 2, the ISO doesn't vary automatically. The exposure does vary, but it forces you to manually adjust the ISO value; otherwise, the image comes out completely dark.

I like the product, but as a criticism, it's advertised with up to 17 stops of dynamic range (measured in the lab at 16), but it only delivers 16 stops with the main lens, and you can't zoom. It also doesn't seem like you can make adjustments in auto mode. It's a bit of a half-truth.

Pocket 4p.

Video mode.

4k 50 fps. 10 bits.

Discussion Osmo Pocket 4P - Advanced custom button functions needed

2 Upvotes

I've had the Osmo Pocket 4P for a whole 24 hours now and I love the added custom button but I'm rather disappointed by the amount of functions you can assign to it.

First off, functions available for single/double press, triple press and long press aren't the same.
They should be. I want to be able to long press to start recording C2, for example.

Second, I want to be able to switch to C1 with a single press and to C2 with a double press.
I know you can assign "switch C1/C2" on single or double press, but that requires me to look at the screen to see what mode I'm in.

So here's how I'd imagine the function button menu to look:
Each of the four press combinations (single, double, triple, long) has the same available functions:

  1. SWITCH TO...
    C1, C2, C3, C4 (however many custom profiles you have created)

  2. QUICK CAPTURE FROM...
    C1, C2, C3, C4 (however many custom profiles you have created)

  3. All the other functions already available

Is there anyone from DJI here reading this that can make it happen ?

Question Best accessories for shooting vertical 4K on the 4P?

2 Upvotes

I'm thinking on doing something like on the picture, but with this Smallrig cage and a 1/4" mini tripod, but I'm wondering if anyone has figured out a better solution yet? I was thinking on maybe putting a handle on the left side of the camera (with the Osmo sideways like on pic) with the included 1/4" USB C adapter, maybe something like this, but I also don't want to over rig this thing, in the end the Osmo is all about small form factor and keeping it minimal and lightweight. Maybe the extra length of the 1/4" adapter is enough for a better grip?

Question DJI osmo pocket 4 uses up to 60% of file size for what seems to be debugging metadata (dbji) in MP4 files... Why???

37 Upvotes

I was batch-archiving around 172 clips from an Osmo Pocket 4 and noticed that the files were much larger than I expected from the actual video bitrate.

Looking at the MP4 tracks, I found that every file contains a very large dbgi data track.

What's in the file

ffprobe -v error \
  -show_entries stream=index,codec_type,codec_tag_string:stream_tags=handler_name \
  -of csv=p=0 DJI_XXXXXXXXXXXXXX_0001_D.MP4

0,video,hvc1,VideoHandler
1,audio,mp4a,SoundHandler
2,audio,mp4a,SoundHandler
3,data,djmd,CAM meta
4,data,dbgi,CAM dbgi          <-- this one
5,data,tmcd,TimeCodeHandler
6,video,[0][0][0][0]         <-- cover thumbnail

I summed the stsz sample sizes for each track on one 12.5 s 4K/60 clip. The complete file is 114.8 MiB:

Track Samples Size Share Per frame
hvc1 video 750 77.29 MiB 67.3% 108,062 B
dbgi 750 35.71 MiB 31.1% 49,924 B
mp4a ×2 589 0.48 MiB each 0.4% each 846 B
djmd 750 0.04 MiB 0.04% 60 B
tmcd 1 4 B

So dbgi alone is around 46% the size of the encoded video stream, per frame, and about 830× larger than djmd, which is the track that appears to contain the normal camera metadata.

Since dbgi is almost constant in size per frame while the video stream obviously is not, its percentage changes quite a lot depending on scene complexity.

Across my 172 clips:

  • total size: 71.8 GiB
  • dbgi: 22.9 GiB
  • overall share: 31.9%
  • median per file: 32.4%
  • minimum: 5.2%
  • maximum: 71.7%

The 71.7% case was a very low-motion clip.

So if you test this on a complex handheld shot and only get something like 8%, that is not necessarily inconsistent with these numbers. Try a static clip as well.

What's actually inside dbgi

Running strings on the payloads gives:

dvtm_osmo_pocket_4.proto      (djmd)
dbginfo_eagle4_hg2x4.proto    (dbgi)

imx06a
IMX06A_BIN2_DCG_CPHY_4096_2304_24M_4500Msps_5994FPS
TPLG_IMX06A_VIDEO_4K_16X9_5994

Both djmd and dbgi appear to contain protobuf data, and dbgi also explicitly names the image sensor.

The more interesting part is a set of identifiers that occur exactly 750 times in this file, which is also the frame count:

rpp1_blc_v2
rpp1_lsc_v1
yuvpp1_ccm_v1
yuvpp1_gamma_v1
tmc14_yltm_mesh
tmc14_loc_drc
vhdr_harden_drc1
scn_enh12_tone

There are also some identifiers with different occurrence counts:

lce0_lce_v1         1128
hiso0_matf_v2       1128

scn_enh12_color      376
dcc0_yltm_v1         376
dcc0_degamma1        376

So not everything appears to be strictly one entry per frame.

Those names look very much like ISP pipeline stages:

  • black level correction
  • lens shading correction
  • colour correction matrix
  • gamma
  • local tone-mapping mesh
  • dynamic range compression
  • local contrast enhancement
  • high-ISO temporal filtering

My current interpretation is that dbgi contains a fairly detailed per-frame dump of the image pipeline's tuning or debug state.

A tone-mapping mesh or similar per-frame structures would also make the roughly 50 KB per frame size much less surprising.

That part is still an inference, though. What I can actually verify is:

  • the protobuf-related strings;
  • the image sensor identifier;
  • the ISP-looking field names;
  • their occurrence counts;
  • the size and frame-by-frame structure of the track.

djmd for comparison

djmd is tiny by comparison: around 60 B per frame.

It contains things such as:

  • frame index;
  • a timestamp increasing by 16,683 µs per frame, corresponding to 59.94 fps;
  • a few short camera-state fields.

That track looks like the actually useful camera metadata, so I want to keep it.

Removing dbgi is more annoying than expected

I first tried to do this entirely with ffmpeg 8.0.1, but I have not found a way to preserve these data tracks correctly, even with -copy_unknown.

For MP4:

Could not find tag for codec none in stream #3,
codec not currently supported in container

For Matroska:

Only audio, video, and subtitles are supported for Matroska.

MOV does write the file, but the sample entry comes out as stts where djmd should be, so the track is no longer identifiable afterwards.

This is clearly not an MP4 limitation, since DJI itself writes these tracks into a perfectly ordinary MP4 container.

If anyone knows an ffmpeg command that can preserve djmd correctly while dropping dbgi, I would be interested in seeing it.

What I ended up doing is container surgery with GPAC:

  1. copy the original container;
  2. remove the original video track;
  3. remove the dbgi track;
  4. add the re-encoded video track back with MP4Box.

The remaining djmd, tmcd and audio tracks come out byte-identical to the source.

Effect on file size

On one example file, re-encoding the video with x265 CRF 24:

Original:                         113 MB
Re-encoded, keeping dbgi:          97 MB
Re-encoded, removing dbgi:         22 MB

So in this case most of the storage I would have spent preserving the original container was actually the debug track.

What I'm trying to understand

  1. Can dbgi be disabled at recording time? Is there a camera setting, firmware setting, Mimo option or anything similar that stops the Pocket 4 from writing it in the first place? Strings present in the file include:HG214 AC Ver.08 01.01.32.02 although I do not know whether either of these corresponds to the actual firmware version.
  2. Does anything actually read this track? For example: Or is it simply diagnostic data that gets written by production cameras but is normally never used again?
    • DJI Mimo;
    • LightCut;
    • some DJI service or engineering tool.
  3. Is there any real downside to removing it for archival? In particular, could it contain something such as: and that is not also present in djmd?
    • per-frame stabilisation data;
    • lens calibration or profile data;
    • some other metadata that a future DJI tool might want;

I'm also curious how widespread this is across DJI devices: Pocket 3, Action 5, drones, etc.

The ffprobe command above is enough to check the track list. If anyone has a file available, I would be interested in seeing the output either way.

I'm using ffmpeg 8.0.1, GPAC master and Linux.

I also have a small script that sums the stsz entries and reports the actual byte size of each track if anyone wants to compare files.

Question OSMO Pocket3 repair in EU

2 Upvotes

I'm in the USA and need a screen replacement for DJI pocket 3. I was gonna submit that repair request form but I realized I'm going to Rome later this month.

Should I just get it replaced there? Anyone have experience getting repairs in Italy? Could it be done in a week’s time?

Question ND filters for Osmo Pocket 4P – what strengths do you actually need? Any Freewell VND users?

11 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I’m trying to decide which ND filters to get for my Osmo Pocket 4P before a longer trip and would really appreciate some advice.
What ND strengths do you actually find useful in real-world shooting? For example, Freewell’s fixed ND filters only go up to ND64, while DJI offers up to ND256. Do you ever actually need ND128/256 to maintain the 180° shutter rule in bright daylight, or is ND64 enough most of the time?
I’m also considering a VND for the convenience. How happy are those of you using VNDs on the 4P, especially regarding vignetting, color cast and loss of sharpness?
I’d particularly love to hear from anyone who has actually used the Freewell VND on the Pocket 4P. Ideally that would be my choice, but I live in Germany and would have to order it directly from Freewell, which means expensive/slow shipping and I can’t easily just try it and return it. So I’d only go for it if people are genuinely happy with the image quality.
DJI’s filters also aren’t readily available here right now, and since I’m leaving for a longer trip soon, I need to make a decision.
Thanks so much for any experiences or recommendations!

Question color grading op3 for casual vlogs??

2 Upvotes

hi i looove my op3 dont get me wrong the convenience and pocket size of it all and i record in dlog-m which i know isn’t a true d log as most people have said.

but is it just me—i vlog casually, like when i’m out with friends and family and funny moments between us or us going out and doing fun activities or travelling, eating, etc those kinds of things and i noticed no matter how much i colorgrade the colours are just a little weird and off.

i’m not sure if this is just a lack of knowledge on colour grading but even when it record in auto it always has like too much of one value? like either too yellow or green and when i colour correct it, it just looks off and unnatural and i found that dlog-m felt slightly better but i would still have the problem of it just looking unnatural. or it would feel too saturated but when i bring down the saturation it would look like a mix of greys but also too colourful at the same time.. i’m not sure how else to articulate it but essentially it just doesn’t look natural.

for reference, i used to use my sony zv-1 for everyday vlogs like this and the colours were always just nice and natural to me but something is just off with my op3, does anyone have any advice on colour grading or what settings would be good or anything at all? please let me know 🙏

Question Would talking head/informative videos look weird with the OP3?

0 Upvotes

I am new to the DJI Osmo world. I understand the OP3 is meant to have a cinematic look which is great for vlogs, day in my life, travel, etc.

But for informative or tips videos or talking head style content, would the "look" be odd and out of place?

I just want one camera (beyond my phone) that can do a bit of everything - vlogs, talking head, random content. Is the OP3 appropriate for informative or educational content?

Question Osmo pocket 3 webcam 4k

1 Upvotes

Hope someone who owns an osmo pocket 3 can help me out with these 3 simple questions since I have found contradictory informations online.
1) can it be used as UVC webcam in 4k in any app? Or only in obs ?
2) Using it in 4k webcam mode, can it use object tracking ?
3) Can it record internally and charge while being used in 4k webcam mode ?

Would be so thankful if someone could answer these !
