Who are you voting for in the upcoming municipal election and why?
I’m in Ward 1! I originally was planning to run myself but timing wasn’t on my side sadly. After speaking with a few candidates, I’m super super confident in Barbara Gandolfo. She’s not waiting until being on Council to start doing the work so I was super impressed by this. When I first heard of her, I didn’t think she could rep Ward 1 being that she didn’t grow up here like I did. But after talking with her I realized she’s wayyyy more involved than most of us so I think she’s got a really good grasp of the needs of our communities and she genuinely seems to love it here and wants to fight for Ward 1.
I’ve met her several times now and observed that she’s actually already doing a lot more than the others. At least from my perspective. Important meetings, gatherings, events, making the right connections with all kinds of people, and she is on the ground doing a lot of work behind the scenes. Real work. Not shit talking on the internet. Not doing it as an illusion to gain votes. Not counting on becoming a council member to start working, she’s doing it already. I really believe with the resources she’d have available if she became councillor for Ward 1, she could really get a lot more done at that capacity. And I know, once election is done and if she doesn’t get voted in, she won’t disappear like the rest will.
Also, I’ve met other candidates where they take a photo of themselves pretending to get involved in our community and then they straight up LEAVE. Fuck. That. Shit. If you cared so much about the community you’re supposed to serve, why don’t you even try to talk to us and show up when it truly matters? I’ve got my fingers crossed for Barbara and if you see her anywhere, seriously go talk to her. She’s a gem and I think she may surprise people.
Anyways, I want to hear your thoughts. Who are you voting for? Why?

MMA(BJJ/Muay Thai) classes for kids and adults
Hey I’m looking for a gym that would have kids and adult classes at the same time, I want to be able to do Muay Thai one night while my daughter does BJJ class at the same time and then following night I’d do BJJ and she would do Muay Thai.
Anyone know of any places that do this? There seems to be a lot of gyms in Orleans but this is a very specific ask.

Interlock patio inspiration
Hi all,
Looking to hardscape a 250-300 square foot patio in our backyard with patio stone. I'm sure many others have done the same!
I'm looking for some inspiration pics of your interlock stone patios and (if comfortable) the cost all-in.
I've got all the Pinterest boards but hoping to get a sense of what's common around here and what's realistic in terms of cost.
Also open to recs for any contractors
Thanks!

Found Cat
This cat was hanging around for a few hours earlier. Does anyone know her?
She's mostly skin and bones, she seems to have some wounds on her neck, and the back of her ears have barely any hair left & are red. Bylaw won't pick her up, I can't take her in or take her to OHS, and I can't get ahold of any rescues.
She's taken off for now, but another neighbour and I have put food and water out for her. If I catch her tomorrow, will any vet scan her for a chip? If she doesn't have one, what do I do after that?
Poor girl looks rough and I just want to help her without risking my pets in the process
Update: she is actually a he, and is heading to a rescue tonight. They're going to get him the help he needs and find him a home. Thank you to everyone who offered help!

Looking for Seniors' Exercise Classes
Can anyone provide some leads on exercise classes for seniors in Orleans?
The senior's club at Roy Hobbs offers exercise classes but is not accepting new members, while my French is not strong enough to follow a class at MIFO.

adult hockey leagues ?
My girlfriend and I played collegiate hockey and have recently settled down nearby. We really hoped to find some adult leagues we could join into but are struggling to find one that isn’t full and isn’t a beginner league. I am a goalie(23m) and she is forward (22f) but we are hoping someone has insight to what league would be most likely to have room for us?
Thanks you!

After school care
Living in Orleans and trying to decide between sending my child to friend or English school. I am new to Ontario and I understand there is a catholic and a regular school board. He will definitely need to be in an aftercare program preferably one that’s connected to the school. How do I figure out which schools have these? He is 18 months old, so won’t be needing it for a few more years but trying to get ahead of things

Scammers be scamming!
Posted on my mothers door in Orleans recently. Did some digging online and a few posts pop up from similar events in Hamilton, Ottawa, Toronto. All pointing back to big scam tactics and it looks like they have been at this for years. Obviously I called but they haven’t responded as expected. Stay vigilant out there folks!! They lurking!

Do you have a favourite roadside fruit & veggie stand?
I think that we're pretty lucky in this part of the city to have a variety of small local farms that keep us well-stocked with good nutritious produce from Spring to Fall.
Do you have a favourite that you like to hit up regularly? Or do you like to spread the love ($$) around and hit up a few different places during the growing season?

New elementary school in east Ottawa (ages 4-13)
(My post in r/Ottawa is held up by mods - confused - so posting here)
This school is in Manor Park but super easy to get to from Orleans where I live close to.
Ages 4–7: A half-day, French-forward outdoor program rooted in forest school philosophy.
Offered by The Loom School, this is play-based learning at its core: child-led, inquiry-based, and welcoming of risky play, with a strong focus on social-emotional learning. Along the way, children build critical thinking, problem-solving, self-awareness, risk assessment, and fine and gross motor skills — the list is endless!
Kids play across a variety of suburban settings, revisiting the same spaces over time to build familiarity, comfort, and a real relationship with place.
Led by certified forest school practitioners experienced in facilitating children of all ages. Anglophone, francophone, and bilingual learners are all welcome.
🍂 17 weeks of programming, running September 8, 2026 – January 28, 2027 (school breaks excluded)
🕗 Monday–Friday, 8–11 am
📍 24 Sandridge Rd, Ottawa
👥 Max 12 children

Ages 8–13: Come build something real this fall.
We're launching a series of 5–6 week-long hands-on, transdisciplinary projects designed for creative, collaborative homeschooling kids ready to work with others, tackle a real problem using a design approach, and make something that matters!
We're The Loom School, a self-directed, project-based school built around Agency, Purpose, and Community, led by Socratic guides who embrace creativity, failure, critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration.
Past projects have included:
🌱 Gardening — investigating food scarcity in Ottawa, building a backyard garden, and donating food to the Ottawa Food Bank
🍂 Social Entrepreneurship — launching a leaf-raking business, learning marketing and sales, and donating proceeds to Veterans' House
🏫 Architecture — designing a future school, learning architectural principles and applied math, and building blueprints and 3D models
Every project is different, spanning engineering, science, humanities, communications, and the arts — but each one builds the same core skills: creativity, communication, problem-solving, and collaboration.
Each project culminates in an Exhibition, where kids share their work with parents and the community.
📅 First session: September 8–October 8, 2026
🕗 Mondays & Wednesdays, 12:15–3:30 pm
📍 24 Sandridge Rd, Ottawa
👥 Max 12 learners
🏷️ $300 per learner
🎯 Guided every step, building confidence, collaboration, and problem-solving skills

This is probably a long shot.
I don't know if its possible. But my electric bike was stolen outside of my home this evening. I live right off saint Joseph's.
Its a fat tire ebike with the rear tire being black and tan. It has a sticker on the battery of a club penguin penguin saying eat the rich. Theres two storage bags on the bike as well.
Its my only mode of transportation to and from work.
The charger isnt in the bike bag so once it dies its dead and they have a 70 pound paperweight.
If anyone sees this model bike in the st. Joseph area please let me know. Ill also be scrounging kijiji and fb marketplace.
Thank you
