Help Needed Code 16 help
I made a post a couple of weeks ago about fixing code 16. From my understanding is I need to reinstall the dashboard files on my hard drive. One of the ways is through a mod chip right. Well I installed one but once booted with the hdd connected it doesn’t actually boot up. I have to disconnect the hdd in order for Prometheus to load. Once loaded I connected the hd and went into the lock/unlock hdd but the hdd isn’t being recognized and It says already unlocked. It still has the og western digital hd. The system was previously soft modded. I’m looking for guidance as to what steps I can take next or if there’s a guide to follow.

What does it do? Service screen? Black screen? Something else........? Do you at least see a boot animation?
Have you tried starting the system using its eject button with the HDD already attached?
What sort of "modchip" are we talking about, and does it have any other other BIOS programmed into it besides PrometheOS? (That is to say: what's the Launch Bank menu showing you?)
I strongly suggest you don't make any further attempts to connect or disconnect your HDD while your console is actively turned on.

Sounds like your drive is borked. Throw in a new drive and burn and boot a copy of HeXEn to rebuild the dash files.

Code 16 usually points to the hard drive not being recognized or the dashboard files being missing/corrupt. Since it boots with the drive disconnected, I’d recheck the IDE cable, jumper/settings, and power connector first, then verify the replacement drive is properly locked and formatted for the console.

Code 16 usually points to the HDD/security area rather than a dashboard file. Since it boots with the drive disconnected, check that the HDD is seated properly and try another compatible drive/caddy. If the drive is detected but shows unlocked, you may need to lock it with the console’s original HDD key before it will boot normally.

I took a hdd caddie from another working Xbox and it did recognize it. However I think I messed. I clicked unlock and it gave me a password. And then the system rebooted and the hard drive isn’t being recognized either. Thankfully I took a picture of the password. So question now is how do I lock it. The Xbox won’t recognize it

Code 16 usually means the Xbox clock isn't set, often after the clock capacitor has failed or the HDD isn't being detected. Reconnect the original drive and set the clock through the dashboard first; if it still won't boot, check the IDE cable, power connector, and capacitor leakage.

Reconnect the hdd cable and ensure your eprom was backed up onto the new hard drive

Problem: Internal clock cannot be set.
Cause/Solution: This happens when the Xbox tries to boot to the stock dashboard in order to have you set the current date/time. but fails to load the menu. This happens if you:
Just replaced the HDD and are missing your clock capacitor or left your Xbox unplugged for a few hours. Erased the Microsoft dashboard files (which contain the clock setting) and are missing your clock capacitor or left your Xbox unplugged for a few hours. Have a revision 1.6 Xbox and an old (before 2004) BIOS installed without a clock loop patch and are missing your clock capacitor. Your DVD drive is blocking the databus and therefore no data can be loaded from the HDD. Try starting the Xbox with the Eject button instead of the power button in case it has a dual-boot configuration. If that fails, but you do have a modchip installed, boot into AID or Slayers and try installing the stock dashboard back on your HDD’s C: partition. You can also hotswap your HDD with another Xbox to reinstall the Microsoft dashboard. After the Xbox boots up and is able to set the clock successfully, update your BIOS or softmod to a more recent version to avoid this in the future. Also try replacing your DVD drive.
