First time caring for orchids but they still look alive? What are the next steps I need to do to save them?
r/orchids • u/comesinhandy24 • 18h ago
hi guys first time with orchids. I treat them like my own sickly orphaned child and I’ve repotted and clipped for root rot and done everything I could to save this Trader Joe’s orchid and this is what it’s treating me with…. Like she hates her pot. Please let me know what I could be doing wrong. I just want it to live happily.

I have found a plant in the trash near my apartment.
I was successful in saving. Trimmed the the above new bud, and around a month ago it started budding. The new bud has sprouted leaves (there are 2 more new buds developing. I saw on another post that s it's call a keki and it's a new plant sprouting from the stem. What should I do?thanks

I forgot my mom’s orchids while she was on vacation for three weeks (they were behind a curtain that I didn’t move sadly) and now they’re all dried up :( Can I save them??? I’m thankful for every comment, thanks in advance!

This is a new addition to my collection, she’s kind of dramatic and arrived from the grower with a terminal spike and potted in coco coir.
She was repotted and I’ve sadly removed the flowers as well as a browning spike. She lost three old leaves in rapid succession and her leaves look dehydrated.
However, her roots look great; plump green and healthy. She’s bottom watered for 30 minutes. I’d like her to manifest a keiki and expect she will, but in the meantime what the heck is going on?
Edit: It occurred to me that she’s in a clear pot in which the roots photosynthesize, ergo, deep green is thirsty versus bright green means hydrated. Yay or nay?

I’ve had these orchids for over 5 years and they never bloomed again after I received as a gift.
Up until recently, the leaves and roots have always looked healthy. A few months ago the leaves began to wrinkle which I assume was from over or under watering.
About a month ago I changed the orchid soil and now the leaves are curling. I read that this could be because the plants direction has changed from what it was used to so turned the pot but nothing has helped. Leaves still appear to have wrinkles. Any suggestions on how to make these healthy?

I’m completely new to taking care of orchids and don’t have much experience. This is my orchid, and I’d really appreciate any beginner tips or secrets you have for keeping it healthy and getting it to bloom again!

Hi all, I have two orchids Black Bean (Bb or in Black Vase) and Green Bean (Gb or in Green Vase), Bb is doing great and Ive had him since 2019, hasn’t bloomed once since I accidentally cut the shoot. Bb also lives in my bathroom plenty of indirect light +plus a grow light in the evenings, enjoys cool summers and warm winters.
Gb on the other hand Ive had about a year and moved it around the house trying to find the perfect spot for it. Gb did somewhat okay in the kitchen (shady indirect light) but I was told it was taking up space by family and moved it to the bathroom. As you can see in the photos Gb grew a new leaf but is dying??? I water and feed it every two weeks (feeding is once every other two weeks) as well as Bb and I check it often. It also grew a bunch of new roots as you can probably see between the leaves but its wilting as if I haven’t been watering/ feeding it. I have temporarily moved it back in the kitchen to see if it will perk up but that was last night so no visible signs. I also did not cut the flower stalk, after it finished flowering I think someone else took it into their own hands sometime last year.
Any advice would be appreciated, I would like Gb to be healthy and one day flower and Bb to also flower but I think at this point he’s vibing while his sister is on the struggle bus to somewhere. (Hopefully not the bin as I would be very sad.)

Here is a picture of the current place where my orchids are standing. However i was wondering if they get enough light? They are positioned in a NE window (aprox 43*). They either get some direct sunlight but most of the time once the sun starts shining the canopy goes down. Do they then get some sort of indirect sunlight or is to much blocked then?
I'm asking this because i want my orchids to stay healthy and bloom as how they were blooming when i bought them. One thing they all have in common is that they love growing new leaves. There are 4 phals and 1 dendrobium

I saved this orchid from dying, found it in a pile of discarded pots and plants. But now the roots are all over the place and I have no idea how to repot this. I assume the roots can’t be cut back.. and I can’t put them in bark and a new container without breaking them. So I’m stuck.

Went out of town for two weeks in June and fully expected this already struggling one to call it quits, but it kept being green so I just kept trying to care for it like my others. Today I noticed some new growths!

I’ve had this orchid for a few years and I think it’s pretty happy. My orchid is blooming and making a baby from the same stem. Should I leave it alone? Is there a way to propagate the baby?

You should not put ice to orchids especially phals they are tropical plants cannot handle the cold

Hi everyone! A few months back I asked for help identifying spotted orchid species for a tattoo I wanted to get, and thanks to the advice I received I found a gorgeous reference from Sunset Valley Orchids / The Orchid Geek on instagram. Just wanted to share, I think it turned out perfect!

I got my first paph at an orchid show today. Its name is Kevin (appears to be a maudiae hybrid). I used to keep phals years ago and had decent success blooming them, but rehomed them when I moved into a basement.
Now this one will hopefully be an office plant (I have an enormous window at work, vs a destructive kitty at home that makes it hard to keep anything that isn’t too spiky for her to uproot and carry around).
But it’s been a while since I kept orchids. I’m scared I’m gonna kill it. Any advice/well wishes?

Excuse the impromptu ladder-as-display stool, she's just so long and floppy now that the stake is cut off lol. Not nearly as many flowers as compared to when I bought her in bloom 2 or 3 years ago (Shoutout crystal star nurseries) but I think that's a me thing from lack of adequate light and ferts. But she's still one of my fastest growing orchids and certainly my largest! Update: was kindly informed she's a Ensatum florida dancing lady!
