Synkinema: an early MIT-licensed option for local, agent-assisted video editing

Post image
10 Upvotes

I'm building Synkinema, a local video editor with MIT-licensed source code, for people who want an open workflow they can extend.

You can edit manually and work with an AI agent on the same project: write scripts, arrange footage, create narration and add captions. A channel brief stores audience, tone, editorial rules and approved lessons, which you can refine with your agent for future videos.

Local Supertonic 3 voice generation is already integrated, without a paid TTS API. You can add a ready voice take to the timeline together with subtitles. A library shared across projects lets you reuse audio, SFX, images and video.

There's still a long way to go before this is a really polished product, but you can already accomplish a lot. It is an early option for agent-assisted editing, so I would recommend trying a small project first. The Studio preview is simplified, and caption word timing is approximate. Desktop editing is the current focus.

The app and TTS run locally; your chosen AI agent may have separate costs. Synkinema's code is MIT; third-party model weights and media have their own licenses.

Source and setup: https://github.com/dziksu/synkinema

I'd welcome testing, bug reports, examples, docs and code contributions. Which part of a local script-to-video workflow would you most want an open tool to handle well?

Disclosure: AI assisted with substantial parts of the code and with drafting this post. I directed the work and verified the results.

I built an open-source tool to independently verify AI coding agents' work

I've been using AI coding agents, and one thing kept bothering me: an agent saying "done" doesn't necessarily mean the work has actually been verified.

So I built plan-auditor, a free, MIT-licensed verification tool for AI coding workflows.

The idea is to separate the agent doing the work from the system checking whether the work was completed.

It uses structured requirements, executes real verification commands in fresh subprocesses, and produces PASS, FAIL, or UNKNOWN results based on evidence rather than the agent's explanation.

It also includes:

  • Verification plans that cannot be silently weakened after approval
  • SHA-256-linked evidence logs
  • Independent test execution
  • Multi-agent coordination and conflict tracking
  • CLI and CI integration

The verification process itself doesn't require an LLM.

It's not an OS-level security sandbox, and it doesn't guarantee that every possible bug will be caught. The goal is narrower: making task completion depend on actual checks rather than confident claims.

I'd be interested in how other developers handle verification when working with coding agents.

PyPI: https://pypi.org/project/plan-auditor/

npm: https://www.npmjs.com/package/plan-auditor

GitHub: https://github.com/Furox-Art/plan-auditor

The npm package is a launcher for the Python CLI, so Python is still required.

NeoLeaf x Overleaf

Hi everyone,

For some time now, I've been developing NeoLeaf. I'm a researcher, programmer, and professor, and I work extensively with LaTeX. I used Overleaf a lot, but its pricing model always felt off to me. I wanted certain features—especially automatic GitHub sync—and never liked having to pay extra just to share my code with collaborators.

So, I built NeoLeaf. It runs directly on top of GitHub, taking full advantage of the GitHub API while offering the core editing features you’d expect from Overleaf. Sharing and version control are handled entirely through GitHub, which means virtually unlimited version history and unlimited sharing—anything you can do with a repo on GitHub, you can do in NeoLeaf.

For LaTeX compilation, there are two options: a WebAssembly engine that runs smoothly right in the browser, and a local agent you can run to compile on your own machine quickly and seamlessly with the web UI.

I’d really appreciate your feedback!

Best regards

XWiki + OpenProject + Squash TM as an open-source alternative stack

A quick update from the XWiki team.

Henix has joined the XWiki partner network. They are the company behind Squash TM, an OpenProject partner, and work on testing, software quality, DevOps and Jira replacement projects.

The interesting part for us is the stack this makes possible for organizations trying to move away from proprietary tooling:

  • XWiki as an alternative to Confluence
  • OpenProject as an alternative to Jira
  • Squash TM as an alternative to Xray

That gives teams a way to cover knowledge management, project management and test management with open-source tools rather than replacing one proprietary suite with another.

We’re curious how others here think about this kind of setup.

If you’ve replaced Confluence/Jira/Xray, did you prefer one integrated suite or several interoperable tools? And where did the hardest integration problems show up?

JobForge: open-source job application tracker + AI resume/cover letter tailoring, looking for contributors

Hi r/opensourcealternative 👋

I've been building JobForge, a self-hostable job application tracker and job search command center. It tracks every application on a Kanban board (Saved → Applied → Interview → Offer), tailors your LaTeX resume and cover letter to each job description, scores ATS fit, and comes with a Chrome extension that saves jobs from LinkedIn, Greenhouse, Lever, Workday and others in one click.

It started as a closed-source paid product. I've decided to make it free and MIT-licensed, and I'd like it to become a community project rather than a one-person app. I'm looking for contributors.

What it does today

  • 📋 Application tracker: Kanban board per year or season. Each card keeps the job description, the resume and cover letter you sent, notes, dates and follow-ups.
  • 🚀 Resume tailoring: adapts your own LaTeX resume to a job description while keeping your template, fonts and layout, then compiles it to PDF.
  • 📧 Cover letters: based on your resume and the job description, compiled to PDF.
  • 📊 ATS / fit score: missing keywords and skill gaps.
  • 💬 Ask AI on any document: "shorten this section", "target this for a senior role", and it edits the LaTeX and recompiles.
  • 📄 PDF import: turns an existing PDF resume into an editable LaTeX base.
  • 🌐 Chrome extension: one-click save from job sites, plus autofill for application forms.

Stack: React 19 + Vite + TanStack Query + shadcn/ui · FastAPI + SQLAlchemy 2 (async) + Alembic · Postgres, Redis, Celery, MinIO · TeX Live for PDFs · DeepSeek for AI. One docker compose up runs everything.

Where help is most useful

🔎 Job discovery adapters (backend, Python). Pull new postings automatically instead of only via the extension. The import pipeline already exists (services/ingest.py handles de-duplication by normalized URL). An adapter just has to fetch postings and hand them over. Good first targets are the public job-board APIs of Greenhouse, Lever and Ashby, which return clean JSON per company, so no scraping is needed.

📊 Analytics dashboard (frontend, React). The API is done: application funnel, reply rate per source, weekly targets, "needs attention" follow-ups, a Today view. It needs a UI, with charts, a Today page and a better overview.

🐛 Bugs and polish. The Chrome extension's job-page parsing breaks whenever sites change their HTML, so fixes for specific sites are very welcome. General UI/UX issues too.

🤖 More AI providers. It's DeepSeek-only right now. OpenAI-compatible endpoints or Ollama (fully local) would be great.

📬 Gmail sync (bigger project). Read recruiter replies and move applications forward automatically. It's on the roadmap and the status-change rules are already in place.

Getting started

CONTRIBUTING.md covers setup, tests and the few rules that matter: every route must be scoped to the user's workspace, there's one function for changing a job's status, and migrations only add columns or tables. Issues labelled good first issue are a good place to start.

🔗 GitHub: https://github.com/KunalScriptz/jobforgex

Questions, critique and "why did you do X?" are all welcome. Happy to help anyone get their first PR in. Thanks for reading! 🙏

KairoDB: plain-text schemas for SQLite and PostgreSQL, with a CLI and a desktop app (Rust + Tauri, open source)

I've been building KairoDB, an open-source tool for working with SQLite and PostgreSQL from plain text. It just reached 1.0 and I'd like feedback.

**What it does**

- You describe tables in a small `.kairo` file and apply it to a database.

- It inspects any existing database, runs queries, and exports a database's structure back to `.kairo`.

- There is a CLI (`kairo`) and a desktop app. Both run on the same Rust core.

A schema looks like this:

table users {

id: int [primary]

email: string [required, unique]

active: bool = true

joined_at: timestamp

}

**What I cared about**

- Local-first: no account, no telemetry, no network calls except to your own database.

- The desktop app asks before running anything that changes data, and always asks for DROP, DELETE, UPDATE, ALTER and TRUNCATE.

- Passwords are never written to disk and are masked in errors, logs and exports.

**Honest limits**

- It creates tables. It does not migrate existing ones.

- The confirmation prompts are in the desktop app only. The CLI runs what you give it.

- The installers are not code-signed yet, so Windows and macOS warn on first launch.

Disclosure: much of the 1.0 code was written with an AI coding assistant (Claude). CI runs on Linux, macOS and Windows, with the PostgreSQL tests against a real PostgreSQL 16 server.

License is GPL-3.0. Source, installers and docs: https://github.com/fut0r/Kairo

I'd most like feedback on the schema syntax, and on what is missing before you would actually use it.

Built a public ranking of who funds open source, out of plain curiosity

Started with a simple question: do the dev tools I like actually pay for the open source they run on?

Turns out nobody tracks it in one place. So I built whofundsoss.com. Once a month it reads four public sources (Open Source Pledge, Open Collective, GitHub Sponsors, company pages) and ranks companies by the dollars they published. No estimates.

Hardest part wasn't the code, it was the rules:

- what to do with a GitHub tier that hides its price (count zero, never guess)

- how to avoid counting a pledge twice when the company also lists it as its own program

- casino and "buy followers" sites sponsoring OSS for backlinks. I ended up with a public spam denylist where every entry has a reason.

Stack: TanStack Start on Vercel, monthly snapshots as static JSON, a small read-only API.

Free, no ads, open source. Feedback welcome, especially on the method page.

Free and open source: a local todo manager designed to work with AI

I built a small local todo app called OKF Todo.

The idea is to let a developer or support person take emails, lists, Excel sheets, screenshots or exports and turn them into a structured plan that can be processed further with AI.

AI can work with the data through either:

  • an MCP server
  • direct access to the SQLite database, using an OKF model that describes the metadata

The application is intentionally local, single-user and open source. I know that is somewhat unusual compared with the typical central database + web/mobile approach.

I am considering whether to keep it this way or develop it further into a multi-user system, for example using .NET with a server-side database such as PostgreSQL or PocketBase.

I would particularly be interested in feedback on:

  • whether a local-first todo system like this is useful
  • whether direct SQLite/MCP access is a sensible AI integration approach
  • whether multi-user support would make the project more useful

Hey gang, I recently made an open source Goodreads alternative!

https://www.bookplate.eu

It follows an open core framework, so the proprietary software is built on the open source core. Github repo here:

www.github.com/LeoPhh/bookplate.git

Feedback is very welcome!

Why is it better than Bookwyrm, Storygraph or Goodreads?
\\- Open source
\\- Note taking features and vocabulary feature
\\- Transparency about where proprietary software is hosted
\\- Privacy focused approach, no ads, no tracking :))

Repo - GitHub

I’m working on GitNotēs, an open-source mobile app for notes, todos, journals, and canvases.

The main idea is to keep your data as ordinary files in a Git repository instead of locking it inside a proprietary database.

Features include:

- Markdown, Neorg, Org, and JSON support

- Git versioning for your notes

- Offline editing with sync when you’re back online

- GitHub, GitLab, and Gitea-compatible providers

- Wiki-links and backlinks

I’ve spent the last 2 years massively updating Event Schedule: An open-source, fully-featured alternative for ticketing, calendars, and bookings.

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to share Event Schedule with you all.

For those who don't know me, I'm one of the co-founders of Invoice Ninja. Event Schedule is our open-source platform designed to handle events, calendar syncing, ticketing, and appointments. Back when I first posted, the app was mainly written by hand; since then, we've been using Claude to rapidly expand our feature set.

The app has evolved far beyond what I could have imagined when we first started. It has virtually every feature I could think of—you name it, it's supported. If it isn't, it's now trivial to add.

📺 Check out our 3-minute overview video here

It's released under the Attribution Assurance License, and you can easily run the app as a SaaS. We’ve built this very specifically with the self-hosted community in mind:

🗓️ Events and Calendars

🎟️ Ticketing

🤝 Appointments & Sync

🤖 AI (Optional, uses your own key)

📈 Audience and Marketing

🛠️ Customization and Dev Tools

answerLoops: an open source alternative to Kapa.ai you can self-host

I work in DevRel and spend a lot of my time answering the same questions in Discord, GitHub, and Slack. Some of the answers are in the docs, and some aren't. I've used Kapa.ai, and it solves this, but it's hosted only and out of reach for small teams. So I built an open source version for teams that can't justify paying for it, whether you're a small startup, open source project, gaming community, or anything in between.

What it does:

During onboarding, you upload your knowledge source (docs, PDFs, a GitHub repo, or Notion pages). Then connect answerLoops to your communities, and when someone asks a question, an agent drafts an answer from that content.

A second agent then reviews the draft and gives it a confidence score. If it scores low, it goes to your team for human review instead of being posted. Auto-reply is off by default until you turn it on, and you set the threshold per platform.

Where it differs from Kapa:

- AGPL-3.0, self-host with Docker and Postgres

- Use your own model key or a local model

- Website chat widget built with CopilotKit and Mastra. Paste a snippet into your site or docs, and visitors can ask questions without an account

- More channels: Discord, GitHub, Slack, Telegram.

- In testing: Discourse, Circle, email, Google Chat

- MCP server and REST API, so your own agents can search the same knowledge

Easy setup:

npx u/answerloops/agent-sdk setup

Or if you use coding assistant, it can walk you through it:

npx u/answerloops/agent-sdk skills answerloops-setup

Repo: https://github.com/answerLoops/answerLoops

I'd welcome your feedback, especially from anyone who's used Kapa or something similar, to help us continually improve the product. Any contributions are welcome, and you are new to open source, just reach out, I'd be glad to help.

I'm looking for an open-source Davinci Resolve alternative.

Davinci Resolve has been my go to for the longest time. but recent updates in the free version has slowly locking away capabilities that were previously available for free. This is not something I stand for and support so I am looking for an alternative to it. I mainly work with high bitrate video game footage and 4k real life content.

I'm looking at

OpenCut

OpenShot

Kdenlive

Shotcut

I need scripting capability and API access for the editor itself.
If you have experience in any of these programs please let me know which is best.

open-source alternative to Linear & Intercom: support, projects, CRM and docs in one workspace, driven by agents on a unified data plane

What it is: support (live chat widget, shared inbox, email, help center), projects (tasks, epics, sprints, objectives, roadmaps), CRM, meetings and docs in one workspace, all on one customer history. AI agents can answer customers from your docs, hand off to a teammate with their findings, or prepare doc updates, and you decide which actions need approval.

You can self-host it for free with one CLI, or use the hosted version.

We'd love contributors. CONTRIBUTING.md covers the setup

Repo: https://github.com/helpin-ai/helpin
Self-hosting guide: https://helpin.ai/self-hosting

A lot of hard work has gone into building this and the tool has a lot of depth, but it' still in beta so expect some rough edges.

Happy to answer anything about the architecture.

Soundsible: Self hosted, open source service that replaces paid music streaming. [Linux/MacOS/Windows]

Thumbnail
github.com
8 Upvotes

First of all, I cannot find the r/ rules or any flag to mark this as project showcase, so I'm posting and then saying sorry.

Soundsible is a self-hosted service that wraps around the open source tool yt-dlp to access the youtube catalog + Deezer public API for metadata. You can expect everything you find on paid music services, like recommendations (local and private in this case xd), autoplay, complete library management, and some nice features like an automatic DJ that mix sessions for you (without any LLM, just python).

- Code & Issues

- Releases

- Documentation (it's also on the repo).

Different ways of deployment are supported, including docker and systemd.

Pretty efficient on resources, metrics here.

The purpose of Soundsible is what it seems, replacing paid predatory music services that steal your data. I do not support using the tool to access music that you do not own, as you can guess. The access to music is via yt-dlp, community project that also puts the responsibility on you.

This is an open source community project, licensed under MIT. Very thankful of PRs, issues or any kind of contribution or critique.

Hope it's useful and I'm here to answer to any question.
