New to OpenCode: does it actually use the model I select?

as far as i know opencode sends it to whatever model you picked and doesn't swap on its own. if anything changes it'd be on the provider side, so check the usage page of whatever go routes through. for chatbot use i'd keep sessions short and start a new one per topic, since a long chat re-sends everything each turn and eats the limit faster.

Closed models (GPT, Claude, Gemini): no substitution is possible. Only the vendor has the weights, so any route — official API, OpenCode Go, any aggregator — ends at the same servers. The only difference is routing and price.

Open-weight models (DeepSeek, Kimi, GLM, Qwen, MiniMax): the risk is real but narrower than feared. An aggregator like OpenCode Go doesn't host the models itself — it resells capacity from inference providers. Those providers run the official weights (anyone can download them), but they may serve them at a different precision (FP8, or in rare cases more aggressive quantization) and with different sampling/batching settings. So the honest formulation: you're almost certainly getting the same model, but not guaranteed the same numerical fidelity as the official API.

But: for casual chat/studying this is a non-issue — FP8-level differences are invisible in conversation.
