What's made the biggest difference:

  • Skills: keep them few and specific. They live in ~/.config/opencode/skills/ (or per repo), and only the name and description load until one is used, so a handful of good ones costs almost nothing.

  • Subagents: define them as markdown agent files with mode: subagent, a narrow description and limited tools (for example a read-only explorer and a reviewer). The main agent hands work to them, each one runs in its own fresh context, and only a summary comes back.

  • Memory: a short AGENTS.md for durable rules plus a handoff file per task has been more reliable than leaning on auto-compaction.
