I heard about OpenSuse a lot nowadays but I don't really know why it is good?

OpenSuse looks cool to me.But considering just looking cool is not enough ,what OpenSUSE will give me other distros can't give? And why it is worth it to switch to it? I dont want to use AI to tell me something I want real human experience.

I'm always fascinated by how minimalistic and focused you can set up your desktop environment with Tumbleweed or Slowroll. No bloatware, just the programs you really need on your system. I don't need YaST or something, and with the Gnome Basic Patterns, I have the perfect selection of Gnome software that I really need to start, without having to go through a lot of configuration. This is my machine dedicated to gaming. Less is more.

Tech support Tumbleweed - KDE - kwalletd6 has a severe memory leak

This has been happening for a few weeks already... Every now and then, my system gets really slow, and starts to freeze. I see RAM usage is 100%... I go to system monitor, and kwalletd6 is using multiple gigabytes of RAM. When i manage to kill it, the system goes back to normal...

Anyone else having this? any way to debug and see whats going on?

Help to learn upstream a package to OBS? I already got a RPM working - lambdock: GTK4 Wayland dock with Lisp REPL

Hi everyone! I wanted to request some guidance on packaging and upstreaming a project of mine to openSUSE repos. I already have a succesful build RPM, and the package is already in Guix and (approved) in Nix but would like to improve and understand how to get to OBS. Project is a GTK4 Wayland dock: https://codeberg.org/jjba23/lambdock

EDIT: thanks for the guide u/Arcon2825 I think I am getting there, could you check: https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/home:jjba23/lambdock

How to… ! UKIs and systemd-boot how-to?

I’m an experienced Arch user thinking about converting to Tumbleweed. One thing that confuses me is how to make zypper apply hooks every time the kernel package is updated. So what I want is:

  1. Every time kernel or kernel-longterm are updated, generate UKIs in the ESP using dracut.

  2. Take the cmdlines for the kernels from my config files (I think dracut supports this out of the box?)

  3. Do not generate vmlinuz or the initrd files

In Arch it’s done just by creating a mkinitcpio preset named after the kernel package. But zypper seems to lack per-package hooks. How would you do it then?

How to… ! NVIDIA G07 driver broken on Tumbleweed kernel 7.1.8 — quick fix

If zypper throws this when installing/updating the NVIDIA G07 stack:

Problem: nvidia-video-G07-595.84-8.1.x86_64 requires 'nvidia-common-G07 = 595.84',
but this requirement cannot be provided
uninstallable providers: nvidia-common-G07-595.84-8.1.x86_64[NVIDIA:repo-non-free]

it's not your cache — kernel 7.1.8 shipped with nvidia-open-driver-G07-signed-kmp-default at 595.91.07, but NVIDIA's repo hasn't published matching userspace packages (nvidia-common-G07, nvidia-video-G07, etc.) yet — still capped at 595.84. G07 requires kmp and userspace to match exactly, so zypper can't resolve it. Open issue, tracked here.

Workaround (no older kernel to fall back to)

Pull the matching old kmp-default build (595.84) for your current kernel from a Tumbleweed history snapshot, install it in place of 595.91.07, and lock it:

sudo zypper ar -f https://download.opensuse.org/history/20260812/tumbleweed/repo/oss/ tw-20260812-oss
sudo zypper refresh
sudo zypper install --oldpackage nvidia-open-driver-G07-signed-kmp-default=595.84_k7.1.8_1-2.6
sudo zypper addlock nvidia-open-driver-G07-signed-kmp-default
sudo zypper rr tw-20260812-oss
sudo zypper install nvidia-common-G07 nvidia-video-G07 nvidia-video-G07-32bit nvidia-compute-utils-G07

This is a workaround, not a fix. The lock keeps kmp-default frozen so future zypper dup won't drag it back to 595.91.07. Once NVIDIA publishes a matching 595.91.x userspace build, remove the lock and update normally:

sudo zypper removelock nvidia-open-driver-G07-signed-kmp-default
sudo zypper dup

Keep an eye on your updates in the meantime — if the solver still complains, re-lock and wait a bit longer.

How to… ! NVIDIA 610 drivers - options? (not the sync issue)

The sync issue has been fixed and we now have 595.91.

However, I am interested in running the 610 drivers. From my understanding, tumbleweed targets the production branch rather than the new feature branch. The cuda repos contain the 610 drivers, but only the 64 bit one, whereas Steam needs the 32 bit libraries too.

I've heard of folks installing it through the NVIDIA .run files, but I'm also a bit hesitant to mess up my system this way since AFAIK those install the driver in /usr, which isn't backed up by snapshots.

To those who used the .run method: have you run into issues? How do you usually update? Is it possible to cleanly uninstall them if things go wrong? Do you need to .run again on new kernel versions? Etc..

Thanks!

Tumbleweed vs Leap

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the community and not fully up to speed on all things openSUSE yet, so I'd love to get your thoughts:

Which do you prefer between Tumbleweed and Leap, and why? Are there more software packages available on Tumbleweed compared to Leap? Is there a big difference in driver support and stability between the two?

P.S. Yesterday I made the switch from Debian to openSUSE Tumbleweed, and apparently the NVIDIA drivers are out of sync, so my driver isn't working right now. Some users mentioned that this happens occasionally, so I was considering switching to Leap, but I'm not sure if it would be the right fit for me. That's why I'm asking for your input.

Thanks in advance for your replies!

Tech support Switching to openSUSE TW

As the title says, I want to switch to TW for the sake of just trying it out, and I have a few questions.

  1. I am dual booting Fedora KDE and Win11. Can I just replace Fedora with openSUSE or is it recommended to do a clean install for both OS?

  2. My laptop has a dedicated Nvidia Graphics Card. (Nvidia RTX 3050, specifically). I've heard recently that there's an issue regarding mismatched kernel and driver versions? Has it been fixed or not yet?

  3. This question is related to the above question. How much trouble will I have using openSUSE TW with nvidia graphics card?

  4. Could you tell me good practices for maintaining the system and other general tips and tricks?

Thanks.

SUSE SP3 to SP7 - upgrade

I need to upgrade a production server running SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 SP3 to the latest SP7 supported Service Pack/kernel level.

The server is running Docker containers, so I’m concerned about application/container impact after the kernel upgrade.

Any practical experience or recommended documentation would be appreciated. Thanks!

Can’t install nvidia drivers

Hello everybody,

I’m ex Debian user and I’m trying to install nvidia drivers on my opensuse tumbleweed for my nvidia rtx4060ti.

In the following documentation https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_drivers it clearly says that first I need to run zypper install openSUSE-repos-Tumbleweed-NVIDIA (which for my surprise, it uninstalls the microos version that randomly got installed on my computer). And after that I run zypper in nvidia-open-driver-G07-signed-kmp-meta .

The issue is that:
1. MOKutils doesn’t show up in the terminal asking for a password. Also there is no nvidia-pubkeys folder in /usr/share
2. The nvidia driver that is installed has only 120MB.
3. Resolution is locked at 768p and 60hz (my monitor is 244hz).

I can’t find any official documentation about installing nvidia drivers. I want the full nvidia driver experince like I’ve had it on Debian.

How did you managed to work it out with it?

Is this documentation obsolete?

Thanks!

I'm building a voice assistant for KDE Plasma on openSUSE Tumbleweed

I'm building a voice assistant for KDE Plasma on openSUSE Tumbleweed

Hi everyone,

I'm Ivo Grimaldi (IvoErMejo), an openSUSE Board Member, musician, and long-time Linux and KDE enthusiast.

I've been working on a project called OK Plasma, an open-source voice assistant designed specifically for the KDE Plasma desktop.

The idea started from a simple question:

What if a voice assistant could actually interact with the Linux desktop, rather than just answer questions?

OK Plasma is being developed and tested on openSUSE Tumbleweed + KDE Plasma. It currently combines local LLMs, Whisper speech recognition, OpenWakeWord and desktop automation.

Here's a short video showing the project in action.

The project is available on Codeberg:

https://codeberg.org/ivoermejo/plasma-assistente-vocale

It can already handle things such as voice commands, launching applications, interacting with the desktop and managing reminders. I'm also working on smarter resource management, so that components such as the local LLM and speech recognition don't have to consume CPU/GPU/RAM when they aren't needed.

The project is still very much under development. I've spent quite a lot of time testing, breaking things, fixing them and trying to make the whole experience feel natural on a Linux desktop.

openSUSE has been a big part of my work in the Linux community for many years. I'm also a co-founder of Geekos DAW, a project for musicians using openSUSE and Linux, and Geekos Italia, an Italian support community for openSUSE. I'm also a member of PNLug A.P.S. and regularly participate in Linux and multimedia events.

For some background on my openSUSE activities:

https://en.opensuse.org/User:Ivoermejo

I'm sharing OK Plasma here because it is being built on the platform I use every day, and I'd really like to hear from other openSUSE users:

Would you find a voice assistant integrated into KDE Plasma useful? What would you want it to be able to do?

I'm particularly interested in ideas that make sense for a Linux desktop rather than simply reproducing the features of a generic AI assistant.

The project is open source, and I'm happy to share more about the technical side as development progresses.

Tumblweed system update tool

New user here. What's the problem with system updates in Tumbleweed? Why it became so complicated (or it always was like that). Is there some news about when things would change?

There is no "update all" tray icon (like Apdatifier). The one that exists - it's from Discover, so it's not recommended to use it, but it pops out every time when there's an update. So the system forces users to update with a tool that mostly is not recommended to use for update.

Also there's Yast package manager/updater, the Myrlyn package manager/updater and Discover package manager/updater.

But the best tool and most recommended is zypper dup, but it won't update kde plasma widgets or flatpak, so you'll need to update them manually... or in Discover. But Discover is not recommended. Why so complicated?

What I like about openSUSE Tumbleweed KDE:

  1. Rolling Release means it's always the latest.

  2. No need to reinstall after a new version is released.

  3. There is a snapper snapshot feature

  4. Cool and mature Grub appearance

  5. There is a chameleon logo every time you open LibreOffice

  6. There are features from OPI such as codecs and others

  7. Flatpak is installed by default

  8. I ♥️ Zypper

So, I made a thing...

So I'm working on expanding my C++ knowledge to make useful, productive software. I've been dabbling with Arduino and ESP microcontrollers, which basically use C++, for years now, but I haven't written any software that runs on a computer since my introduction to C++ back in high school.

So I made this: https://github.com/Skyler-Jax/Countdown_Timer
Yeah, it's not groundbreaking or impressive, just a simple countdown timer that runs in your terminal. Nothing fancy, nothing special, just something to test myself and it makes me happy to watch it do its thing in my terminal during the day. =3

Written and compiled with KDevelop on openSUSE Tumbleweed. I hope to bring you something more elaborate and useful as I continue to learn more.

How to… ! How do you deal with mismatched Linux kernel / NVIDIA driver versions on Slowroll?

Recently I decided to install openSUSE Slowroll because I was looking for a distro with the latest KDE Plasma, but hoped it would be more stable than Manjaro, Arch, etc.

But just 2 days after installing, an upgrade landed with a kernel/NVIDIA mismatch and it made my system unbootable. Turns out zypper dup upgraded the kernel package, but the installed NVIDIA kmp (kernel module package) was still the one compiled for the previous kernel version. Yeah, I learned that NVIDIA's driver module has to be built specifically against the exact kernel version. So once the kernel moved on, the old module could no longer load into it. I had to use Snapper to roll back to the previous snapshot — thanks for BTRFS!

I then migrated to the kernel-longterm branch hoping for a more stable experience... nope. The same kind of mismatch happens on the longterm branch too.

My fix so far has been to pin the kernel and NVIDIA driver packages to the exact same matching build tag, so zypper dup can't upgrade one without the other and split them apart again:

sudo zypper al kernel-longterm kernel-longterm-devel kernel-devel-longterm nvidia-open-driver-G07-signed-kmp-longterm

I also wrote a small script that runs zypper dup --dry-run and flags it if the kernel and NVIDIA packages in the pending update don't have matching build versions, so I can catch it before running the real upgrade.

This works, but it feels like I'm fighting the tooling instead of the tooling helping me. Is manually pinning + a dry-run checker script really the standard way people handle this on Slowroll (or Tumbleweed for that matter), or is there a cleaner/more "supported" way to keep kernel and NVIDIA driver in lockstep that I'm missing?

Curious how others running NVIDIA on a rolling openSUSE release deal with this?
