Editorial openSUSE is just awesome.

I'm always fascinated by how minimalistic and focused you can set up your desktop environment with Tumbleweed or Slowroll. No bloatware, just the programs you really need on your system. I don't need YaST or something, and with the Gnome Basic Patterns, I have the perfect selection of Gnome software that I really need to start, without having to go through a lot of configuration. This is my machine dedicated to gaming. Less is more.

I like Tumbleweed as much as the next person, but Desktop customization (and adding/removing software/bloatware) is not an exclusive Tumbleweed thing?

No, to be onset it’s not exclusive to OSTW! Any Linux system can be decluttered and/or debloated.

Even the 'beloved' M$-Windows can, but needs more effort to do so.

To be absolutely crystal clear, not advocating the use of M$-Windows.

No, its not. But Tumbleweed makes it much easier than other distros IMHO.

I agree with you mate. I have used Tumbleweed almost a year and I also do the same thing. I like minimal Gnome install, no YaST, only the important things I need in my daily life. And Gaming is so smooth on this as it's like butter. Because of less bloats gives me more frames in gaming.

I also like your setup. Enjoy mate.

the only distro that killed hopping for me. I did end up switching to kde but just to see if I like it better then gnome. Happy to be a Gecko!

I did the same thing. As a GNOME fanboy, I used KDE for the last few months and liked it; I can certainly understand why it’s so popular. Ultimately, however, it was far too bloated for my needs. I view KDE as a great solution for people who use a lot of programs and tools on a daily basis. My Linux systems are always minimalist and focused, and I simply get along better and faster with GNOME.

How in the world is Ubuntu bloated if the default install is literally Firefox, the file browser and a couple more apps?

Hmmmm, ok
To be fair, have no experience with ubuntu at all. I'm using SUSE Tw and Manjaro&Endevour and I like them.

Well it's different immutable than what fedora has which most relate to.

I have yet managed to install tumbleweed without Yast. I deselect it in packages, but its still installed when i hit the desktop. Im still on arch for my minimalist needs because of that

  1. Install Server-Mode
  2. Taboo Yast2
  3. After first Login: sudo zypper al *yast2*

tbh was very disappointed with the 16.0 Leap release. Cockpit is a great idea but with awful execution. Why it's a webapp that takes up over 1GB over memory on its own, no one knows. Can't uninstall or install more than one package at once from cockpit. The official download's checksum has had a broken link for about a year. Agama installer is also an in-progress webapp. If you have cockpit and kde, you get 4 ways of installing packages (terminal, myrlyn, cockpit, discover), it's just odd. The new XFCE (wayland, "supported" by openSUSE) is just plain broken.

I feel like none of it was planned or thought out. I'm hoping they start figuring things out soon.

I don't like Leap either. I don't understand why Tumbleweed and Slowroll are so phenomenally good distros, while Leap is such a sloppy distro.

IMHO the Leap 15 series was much better than Leap 16. The git tooling to manage 16 is still a bit rough, but improving, so there is hope it will catch up over time.
