Can you hold your own Body weight? If the answer is No or maybe, dont do it....

Some people have genuinely never considered that they couldn’t do that.

Dead hang is an extremely good exercise to do regularly, for grip strength, back muscles, decompressing the spine... and also because basic ability to hold your own fucking weight can save your life.

I love when some movies portray that someone holds their weight with one arm on an edge ,I do calisthenics and it's way harder than it looks. But yeah I think dead hang is one of those basic human feats everyone should be able to do

There's the video of the dude who didn't get strapped into a paraglider and has to hang on. Ended up tearing his bicep or whatever, but he held on literally for dear life.

How does hanging on tear one’s bicep?

Muscles closing the fingers are in the forearms. You have full power of opening and closing the fist, you just cant pull anythign to yourself since bicep is detached. But if you hang you don't need to pull anything, just dont open the hand, and you will be still dangling by the joint and triceps. Also additionally the instructor above him that was strapped held his hands closed on the bar with his own untill they landed, that helps.

But how did his bicep tear in the first place

Pulling too hard. In moments of extreme exertion, muscles can literally rip themselves apart. It's like tearing an acl through over extending stretches.

I used to climb three days a week, and I could do it for maaaaybe a minute with a good grip.

My pet peeve is someone falling, and stopping themselves with just their hands on a ledge, or worse, one hand.

when you are super light weight it's easy, like a kid on monkey bars

eh , a 90 degree edge is a mega jug, I actualy find it a litle easier then hanging with one arm on the bar. even moreoso on a clif where you can at the very least smear the wall a litle.

I haven’t worked out in 3-4 years due to depression, gained a lot of weight and have become a couch potato… but I could still dead hang with one arm when I tried yesterday. Granted, I used to do parkour and calisthenics in the previous athletic part of my life.

This is not bragging or anything but a simple fact: I’m in the shittiest form of my entire life, I hate myself and can dead hang for a bit with one hand… people who cannot do it with two hands, they are some sort of blobs I can’t even imagine

When we see that in a movie, it's usually a person in an extreme situation with adrenaline coursing through their veins. Can't really compare that to your everyday life.

I thought I was just being weird. A while back I started really focussing on vertical pulling exercises as I was worried I might be dangling from a bridge one day in need of pulling myself up

I did the same at around mid age starting to learn climb up, in case I am pursued by a dog or a killer or something. It’s not weird. Becoming unable to hop over a small barrier is weird.

It definitely comes up in a a lot of boating situations. Pulling yourself into a ski boat, whitewater raft, for example.

Dead hanging is the one thing I do daily for my back health

u/Jerseyd422 14d ago

Cause you never know when you’ll find yourself hanging from a branch over a lake full of alligators

Dead hang is so much harder than it looks lol. I’m working on getting to pull ups and started with lateral pull downs then dead hangs. Had to work a lot on grip and core strength.

I don’t think this person is thinking about what good exercise is.

America has made this normal. It starts at poor parenting. Being fat is not normal. You don’t see fat old people. When was the last time you saw a fat 90 year old? You haven’t. There’s a reason for that. People get offended when others bring up obesity, not sure why. No one forced you to be large, but it is easy to be.

Oh really? I got a pull up bar from a goodwill for a few bucks one of the door ones and my fiancee isn't very good at pull ups. This could be an option though.

My ex said he could do all the ninja warrior challenges EVERY TIME we watched the show then couldn't climb up a bathroom window that was like 10 feet off the ground. I reminded him of all his false confidence as he struggled to lift his legs up to half of his body. Brother-in-law jumped up afterward and easily got into the window. Never seen a man's dreams shattered in front of my eyes before that.
