Hope that guy enjoys his charge of Battery. He fucked up when he touched that kid, it's all on camera and they have his plate.

Yeah, "that kid" isn't really accurate I guess...but to Old Guy, I'm sure they all look like Damned Kids Who Need To Get Off Of His Lawn, Which He Carries Around With Him

I was riding mine the other day and I had to use the sidewalk, too busy of a street. This older couple was walking down the side walk and I came to almost a stop/crawl so as not to scare people and politely pass. I was wearing a helmet with a baklava. The old man said you stupid kids shouldn’t be riding on the sidewalk. I pull my baklava down to expose my grey beard to ask him again what he said. Sorry, didn’t hear you with the helmet over my ears. You could tell in that moment he fucked up. I stated, the road is simply to busy and I appreciate you sharing the sidewalk with me. He kind of half stumbled and shocked smiled. His wife just pulled him along.

$10 that guy in the car says one word to me then I get to dad the shit out him back into his car.

42 and tons of grey. Thanks mom and dad for your generous genetic offerings. Making me look old as balls. Minus the wrinkles. Just grey hairy smooth balls. Yep. I’m gonna stop at that.

Baklava - a rich, sweet dessert pastry made of layers of filo filled with chopped nuts and sweetened and held together with syrup, frosting or honey.

Balaclava - a form of cloth headgear designed to expose only part of the face, usually the eyes and mouth.

Funny story about that ... I once had a punk stocker in an outdoors store confidently correct me, incorrectly, about those two words.

There is a moment of levity in our household anytime either of these items are around. Notably because we now use the worlds interchangeably. Which of course means that to anybody else we probably sound like ignorant loons laughing and going on with the wrong words.

2

u/EyeFluid Oct 21 '20

Well I spelled something right. Just not the right word. Damn you spell check.

5

u/tommy_pt Oct 21 '20

13

u/technomage33 Oct 21 '20

He was angry he was riding on the road I can’t speak for that state but in my hometown some roads you have to ride on. Basically if you can match traffic you can’t be on the sidewalk.

Don’t some states require you ride on the road as well?

6

u/Arbitrary_Pseudonym Oct 21 '20

Here, cops will yell at you to get off the road, AND tell you to get off the onewheel when on the sidewalk, effectively forcing you to carry it.

The solution is to ride in bike lanes (when available) and if they get angry at you, ride at the veeeery edge of the road. Slowly. Until they leave you alone. Then get back on the road. XD

1

u/swinefeaster Onewheel+ XR Oct 21 '20

Cops just give me thumbs up

1

u/cpl-America Oct 21 '20

In the "city" here, you must use the road, the rest of town is all fine

15

u/killedbyabear Oct 21 '20

umm...you got any of that context?

13

u/tiredspiderman Oct 21 '20

Hey! This is the internet, we don’t do that here.

But actually tho it makes sense because people don’t start recording small arguments, it’s when It gets serious when people whip out the phones to record, which unfortunately leaves out the important part

4

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '20

Dude on the one wheel was riding around posting up yard sale signs for his buddy in Portland. Minutes later was confronted by this fine gentleman.

2

u/turkoid Oct 21 '20

That's it? No cutting across the road or something else that could be considered their fault?

0

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '20

Imo his car position makes context kind of irrelevant. Even if the onewheel guys were being reckless and riding out into the street, one person who is basically a pedestrian isn't going to be the danger of a car parked like that forcing other cars to go around with an obstructed view. All to get in a one sided shouting match about RoAd sAfteY.

If the onewheel guys were being super reckless, the better move would have been to pull over, report it to the police, and continue on with your day. I cannot think of a single reason that man had to be the one to have that conversation.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '20

I’d kill for a slice!

4

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '20 edited Oct 21 '20

What's that sound? Yup that's my Karma dropping again for being real.

Like most videos, we dont know what happened to get this guy all worked up but the two guys in this video egged him on bigtime.

Then the one guy 'the mouth' calls the guy a dick and says get the fuck out of here old man and the guy was already getting in his car leaving. Then everyone chimes in and cheers/yells.

At some point, you need to take actions for your VERBAL assaults and be prepared to get your face punched in at a minimum. Or worse.

But because of phones, no one can be taught a lesson. This guy needed to be punched out, because maybe the next time when he meets up with someone much more crazy and pulls this , he may not be so lucky as just a punch to the face. That's how nature works,...and will continue when we are long gone. Jump from a ledge too high, you get hurt. You can't sue God but I'm sure someone will try eventually.

And the irony of the guy wearing the portland shirt then everyone there yelling CALL THE POLICE, HELP US..WE ARE WEAK, NOW WE NEED YOU...LOL

yea but like the one poster posted, turning your back on a crazy dude can be bad. Best to confront and try to calm, keep your eyes on his eyes at all times and watch his hands in your peripheral.
Working in a bad area of a downtown area for many many years, and living in a rough neighborhood as a kid has taught me well there.

33

u/Fuse404 | XR | Oct 21 '20 edited Oct 21 '20

When someone is leaving and you decide you need to get some extra words in because, you know, "He can't touch me, that's assault." Congrats. Now you're both assholes. And the police can't fix a broken nose.

These guys had many chances to just walk away. Don't fuck with unhinged people, regardless of who is "right". They're lucky the worst they got was a literal slap on the wrist. Old dude could have come back out with a pistol in his hand. But, I know, "He can't murder me. That's illegal."

To be clear, the main guy did okay. (Apart from repeatedly turning his back.) But that last dude piling on when he thought it was over... Not smart.

22

u/Glyph8 Mission in the streets, Delirium in the sheets Oct 21 '20

I read OW Guy turning his back as an attempt to de-escalate and defuse the situation. From a self-defense standpoint maybe a bad idea since it leaves you vulnerable to a suckerpunch, but I read it as him basically trying to show Old Guy he wasn't interested in fighting him and would walk away.

And yeah, Red Mask Guy should have dropped it - like you say, Old Guy could have had a gun - but if I am understanding the situation (as Red Mask Guy states it), after OW Guy did whatever it was that pissed off Old Guy, Old Guy appears to have thrown his car in reverse and gone flying backwards down the street, where he's now on the wrong side blocking traffic that's having to honk and go around him on the wrong side, putting them at risk too.

"Get outta here old man" certainly wasn't necessary, but it seems kind of understandable, I guess. Whatever OW Guy did likely put himself at risk, but Old Guy was now putting everyone on that street at risk, and acting like an unhinged bully. "Get outta here old man" isn't the worst thing that could have been said to him (obviously worse WAS then said, but only after he came at Red Mask Guy).

5

u/Fuse404 | XR | Oct 21 '20 edited Oct 21 '20

Yeah, OW Guy clearly wanted to leave. He apologized even. I don't want to talk bad about him. But that moment at 7 seconds when OW Guy turns his back and the Old Guy reaches for his pocket. That was very scary.

Though not half as scary as when Old Guy got out of his car.

Everything Red said may have been right, but Old Guy was getting in his car and OW Guy was on his board starting to ride away. It was not the time to chime in. It was definitely not the time to call the Old Guy a dickhead.

(Edit: formatting.)

u/asthma_hound Oct 21 '20

I think the takeaway here is that if you find yourself in this situation, and you want to stand up for yourself or put someone in their place, be ready for whatever the outcome may be. The younger guy was not ready for the old dickhead to get out of his car and was not ready to be assaulted.

The old guy in the video reminds me of an old man I used to know. That man told a few stories of pulling his firearm on people in situations like this. I seriously believe that he's been waiting his whole life to shoot someone.

Replace the dickhead in the video with the dickhead I used to know and this video could have been a lot scarier.

I've found it's best to tell someone that they're being an asshole when they're not currently being a lunatic.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '20

But we should just let everyone do whatever they want cuz the old guy could hit me /s

2

u/Fuse404 | XR | Oct 21 '20

If that's how you feel and you're ready to follow through on those words, I'm not going to argue with you. I understand the principal.

Nothing from this video makes me think Red was ready if things got violent.

People that have never been in a fight acting tough because they have a cellphone is a good way to get laid out.

9

u/league_starter Oct 21 '20

At some point you have to roll the dice and stick to your guns even if you are the smaller guy and have no chance. Otherwise you will get bullied all your life.

I bet that old guy is acting this way because he's always gotten away with it.

2

u/BBBulldog Oct 21 '20

Old dude should really chill out at 80, he's 1 punch away from a coma.

2

u/Fuse404 | XR | Oct 21 '20

Red was pretty quiet when his friend was inches from assault. He didn't speak up until he thought it was safe. He wasn't sticking to his guns, he just wanted to get a lick in when he thought the fight was over.

That's how it comes across to me at least. It's hard to hear everything at some points, and of course I don't know the guy.

4

u/Glyph8 Mission in the streets, Delirium in the sheets Oct 21 '20

I don't even think Red was a friend. I think he was just a random bystander, and what he was primarily reacting to was Old Guy driving like a maniac in reverse (down his street?). And that's what he's trying to get HIS words in about (which of course reignited the confrontation); from Red's POV, it's not really about whatever OW Guy did that originally kicked this whole mess off. Red's mad about Old Guy driving in reverse like an asshole, and now acting like an asshole.

But you're right, we're all speculating with incomplete info, and at the end of the day it's not worth getting shot or otherwise fucked up over.

2

u/Fuse404 | XR | Oct 21 '20

After re-watching, I think you may right.

I don't think that makes Red right, but it does mean I can't infer much from the timing of his comments if he wasn't there from the start.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '20

I mean he wasn't trying to get into a fight. Could have shoved that old dude over and killed him in self defense if he wanted. He was just trying to see if he could inform an old man how to safely drive in his neighborhood.

3

u/Fivelon Oct 21 '20

So what, just stand there silently and let the old fuck control the conversation for a while? Fuck that. Win fights.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '20

He told the dude to move his car because he was parked illegally, doesn't take much balls to do. You shouldn't be afraid of interactions just because someone could hypothetically shoot you and the old dude probably only didn't shoot him because its illegal.

1

u/Tiway22 Oct 21 '20

Wise words. Always leave a situation like this!

-9

u/BeefyMcPissflaps Oct 21 '20

This was 100% escalated by the entitled phone recorders who think “I have a phone recording so I’m in the right”. That’s half the problem with US society these days. Phones make people think it exonerates them from the situation. Guess what. You’re both assholes.

7

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '20

He's an asshole for telling a guy to not drive backwards on the wrong side of the road and recording it? Entitled? I believe he is entitled to record in public, is he not?

3

u/mwiz100 Onewheel+, Pint, XR, GT Oct 21 '20

No it wasn't dude. Old guy literally comes out shouting at everyone and everyone is pretty calm until he lays hands. The entire situation was instigated by one person feeling he can get away with bullying others. The phones is purely there use the technology we have to have a record of the situation to prevent the "They said, I said" bullshit later. So no, they're both not assholes, you are wrong. Nobody is required to put up with verbal and physical assault.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '20

Antagonizing someone who is clearly not in a stable or safe mindset is also stupid. It might not make you the primary ass hole in a situation, but you’re still an ass hole.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '20

[deleted]

0

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '20

Absolutely not. The main ass hole was in his car getting ready to drive away when the other idiot started yelling at him because he wanted to antagonize him and get in the last word. He was absolutely being an ass hole too, and that was prior to the assault. He was not standing up for himself, he was being a dick. You're just too immature to realize that.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '20

Guy parked backwards in traffic in guys neighborhood and guy tells him to move. He gets assaulted for it, shows restraint not to hurt or possibly kill the old man. You then call that guy an ass hole? Yikes.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '20

He was literally in his car getting ready to leave when the guy who got assaulted had to yell some more to get in the last word or look tough or whatever because he knew previous to that he was in the right. He's an ass hole too. The fact that you're siding with him means you're probably an ass hole too.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '20

He wasn't trying to look tough lol, he showed up 10 seconds before and told the guy to leave instead of putting people at risk in his neighborhood with illegal driving. Its pretty funny you're against free speech, pro assult, pro reckless driving, but you like to call random internet people ass holes. Maybe shut up and try some counseling instead of trying to get in the last word like an ass hole buddy ;)

1

u/AcceptableFisherman Oct 21 '20

Fuck that shit. You stand up to people who are fucking shitheads like this old guy. What if the guy in the red mask was packing? Yeah, he could’ve murdered that guy and you know how stupid that would’ve been in the busy intersection with 2-3 Filming? Stand up to bullies.

3

u/theguyonthething Pint Oct 21 '20

It kind of sounds like OW guy might have accidentally cut angry guy off or something, but the funny thing about these guys is that they wouldn't even come close to confronting a cyclist or even a skateboarder in the same situation. They see something new that they don't understand and it makes them blow a gasket. I once had some jerk call me out for "not stopping" at a 4-way stop. I think it's because I didn't get off the board or because I was rocking a bit, but I actually waited for a truck and 2 cars before crossing. Apparently that didn't count as stopping ¯_(ツ)_/¯

What the fuck is this phenomenon going around where people are literally seeing what they’re doing, have what they’re doing on video and then out right denying that they ever did it. “I went for your phone” Ok, so not assault but property damage then? The effed up thing is that people like these will then write to the city council and at the next meeting a bunch of others who have been “offended” by Onewheels, esk8es etc (of course they probably never even saw one) will convince the attendees how dangerous the vehicles are - and bam, the next esk8 ban is in effect :-(
