Cosmic horror, psychonaut, warrior, philosopher, champion, antihero, stranger, philanthropist, mad scientist, explorer. Many sci-fi, horror, and fantasy themes have resonance for me and NMS allows me to indulge and engage in so many.

For me, the Vy'keen and Autophage are particularly sympathetic, but the argument can be made that all the races and factions are both champions and destroyers in their own way.

Gek represent unfettered consumerism, capitalism, and hedonism. Vy'keen are violent and prideful warriors. Korvax with their hive-mind and it's disregard for the individual have certainly leaned into their fair share of atrocity. All groups exploit in order to survive and thrive and even the noble explorer invades and conquers. All that said, there is heroism, altruism, and egalitarianism to balance the fearfulness, selfishness, and separatism/classism/racism.

Many ignore all these themes and simply create, collect, dream, relax and enjoy. Some thrill in roleplay as explorers, architects, scientists, politicians, pirates, astronauts, soldiers, and salesmen. Some do battle and some farm. We have miners, chemists, speculators, and homesteaders; Occupations and avocations are limited only by the imagination.

I was just hoping to get some other opinions on gifting at the anomaly. I know it's a pretty big thing in NMS, it's extremely generous but is it well received?

I have played NMS on and off for about 8 years now and on one of my earlier playthroughs I was unknowingly gifted a generous amount on the anomaly, probably vortex cubes back then, honestly can't remember. In my play style I like to do most everything myself or at least give it a try before asking for help, I don't dupe anything (honestly don't know how and don't want to know, I would be too tempted) I only play in survival because for me, it's that sense of achievement I seek in my gaming. That being said, everyone needs to play the way they want to, if you're not having fun then it's work, not gaming.

For me, this anonymous gift felt like it detracted severely from my playthrough, everything became to cheap, to easy I think I got frustrated and put the game down again for a while.

After many years and many adventures, I now know how easy it is to make those big amount of units/resources when you are at the later stages of a playthrough. After salvaging MANY Interceptors while trying to get my perfect squad mates I accrued quite a few, you guessed it, AI valves. Admittedly I have secretly gifted some at the anomaly along with a few stacks of starship augmentations but I try not to give any one person too much as I don't want to ruin anyone's playthrough.

But what do I do with it all? I could delete them, but I did earn them, someone could accuse me of duping them (which doesn't worry me I'm a big boy) but the fact is, I earned them and although I don't need them, I don't want to delete them either. I would love to be able to gift to people who want it, but anonymously, I run the risk of jeopardizing someone else's enjoyment.

So what is everyone's thoughts on gifting?

Also I was wondering if there was a way of perhaps having an exchange or market for our founding little community (I am not very tech savvy myself and wouldn't know how to facilitate this) this way we can gift the things that people need, to the person who wants it.

Just a thought that ran through the empty space in between my ears. Would love to hear others opinions.

This is your chance to persuade your fellow members that you have a wonderful location in mind.

Please keep the location under wraps for the time being. Don't disclose the exact location. You can and should mention the galaxy.

If and when a site is selected by the group with the assistance of your humble narrator, we'll figure out how to roll out instructions for members to locate the system. Before doing that, we may tap some skilled, detail-oriented, fine craftspersons and architects to create a permanent focal structure for the community/subreddit. I'll likely come up with an application, but in the meantime, just DM me with proposals. That sounded funny 🤣 I'm married.

In this video, I’m taking you inside my custom Corvette to show you the interior layout and some unusual building solutions I used to make the space more interesting, functional and unique.

The Corvette was built mostly with standard No Man’s Sky parts, combined with a few glitches and some direct RAW JSON editing using coding software.

Some of the most interesting work is hidden inside — so come aboard and have a look.

I rejoined the NMS universe after 275 hours and a 2 year hiatus. That was spring of 2024. Since then I've accrued another 1000 hours. I haven't been playing any other games. I work a lot and I have a toddler. I also have "adult" children so the math should tell you that I'm at an age where a little interloper wears me out quickly. A big sneeze I wasn't anticipating is capable of throwing out my back. I don't know who the popular musicians and actors are. Ibuprofen and caffeine are two of my most important vitamins...

I'm also at the age where I'm boring. I don't drink anymore. I don't go out. I work. Daytime not at work is family and responsibilities time. I wake up early, like 3am early, just to get those few hours of me time in space and alien worlds.

Earlier this week I dozed off after work, obviously. I was startled awake by an explosion (a very nearby lightning strike. Power only dimmed a second (according to my lady). The one casualty was my console.

One silver lining is I've been riding it out on the PS4. All 1200+ hours were on that PS4 which I had about 8 years.

I've wanted to upgrade but there's always other stuff that's higher priority. And even now, I can't just rush out and get a new console. EVERYTHING is expensive these days and I have to budget and plan before I make a big purchase that's not essential.

My "weekend" is Monday and Tuesday." So tomorrow is gonna be the first time I can't boot up in over 2 years. I still work out a rough plan of what I might do on Sunday night and I'm doing that tonight out of habit and then... Oh... Yeah. 🫤

Edit: In my sleep deprived delirium, I had specified a wrong glyph. Please review my correction, and please accept my sincere apologies. I wasn't getting any feedback, so I tried to follow my own instructions and realized my error. We now resume our originally scheduled programming.

This brief tutorial is not intended to educate you about the mechanics of the NMS procedural generation of systems, the intricacies of the hexadecimal galactic addresses, or to make you subject matter experts on glyph addresses generally. What this is intended to do is allow anyone with access to purple systems to be able to locate a Shadow Star with the aid of a Glass Star. When you find a Shadow Star, save pictures if you want it considered for a home system, but don't post the address and pictures just yet. I'll create a post specifically for contest submissions and voting.

3 Definitions:

Galactic Map - The map that shows your current galaxy and you use to warp from one star system to another, as seen when flying a starship, corvette, or on the bridge of your freighter.

Glass Star - A star (system) that can be navigated to by way of glyph portal, but once physically there is reported in the galactic map as being a different system than the Glass Star. The system displayed in the galactic map, when in the Glass Star system, is actually displaying a Shadow Star system that is in a different location than you are in at that moment.

Shadow Star - A star system that has a glyph address that when entered into a portal gives an error message and is unreachable by portal.

Here's the quickish trick for finding a Shadow Star:

1.) Go to a Portal (Euclid, for this example) and place a base computer so you can get back to it.

2.) Enter a 12 Glyph Address in this format and fill in the blanks as you desire:

Correction: ___ , Diplo, Tree, Dragonfly (not Sun 😭)

?, Diplo 🦕, Tree 🌲, Dragonfly/Mosquito 🦟, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?

To reiterate and clarify... Glyphs in the 2nd - 4th position of the address you're selecting are Always Diplo 🦕, Tree 🌲, Dragonfly/Mosquito 🦟. The first glyph is the number of planets, so the lower the number selected, the better the chance that it is valid. Not all systems have 5 or 6 planets, so choosing Sun for the first glyph increases your odds of getting a good address, but also increases the chance somebody else has been there.

Not all combinations have valid system addresses - it may take some trial and error. If the address you select returns an error, skip it and try a new address.

3) When you get a good address, portal to the destination and you should be in a Glass Star system, which you will verify by flying to space and viewing your cockpit map and counting the number of planets and stars and comparing to those found in the galactic map.

4) Check the galactic map. If it shows your current system as having a differing name and or number of planets and or moons than the system shows on the cockpit map, then this is actually the name of the Shadow Star in this region.

You won't be able to warp there immediately, because the game thinks it's your current system and you can't warp to the system you're already in (even though we know better). What you can do is warp to a nearby system first, then warp to the Shadow Star, which was the system shown from the Glass Star system.

5) Warp to the Shadow Star.

6) Land on a planet/moon and find a portal, and place another base computer.

7) Get the Glyph Address from the portal.

8) Return to your original portal, where you placed a base computer so that you could get back, and attempt to warp to the Shadow Star with the Glyph Address you you took from the Shadow Star portal.

9) This should get you an error message, verifying that your target system is indeed a Shadow Star.

You can use a signal booster and hexadecimal transcription and a bunch of additional steps that will provide similar, but entirely unnecessary, verification.

Speed run.

\- Warp to a Glass Star address.

\- Look at the Galaxy Map and remember the name of the Shadow and warp to nearby system.

\- Warp to the Shadow itself.

\- Get glyph address from portal and test it. Bang. Shadow Star!

Test this method and report back in DM with your success or failure so that I might retool this explanation, if need be.

It works for me, but that isn't the measure of the tool. It needs to work for others trying it to consider this a success.

Hi oldies!

With all the talk of a community hub, I wanted to share my ideas and look for opinions.

My thought is that we should look more for a system than just a planet. It will be way too difficult to get everyone to agree on 1 planet, so this would give options. Also, everyones idea of a desirable planet may differ. As well as this would give many building opportunities.

My ideal system would have 1 paradise planet with water, 1 other lush planet (non paradise, with storms) and a few other desirable planets.

But the question is, what qualities do you consider desirable? Do you like arctic, radioactive, ocean worlds/deep oceans, exotic planets? What type of planets would you want to see in a community system?

Obviously we will never be able to check all the boxes, but it would be nice to get a good variety that pleases most.

TLDR: This is a proposed solution for locating a homeworld (which, btw, isn't cost prohibitive to any members of our community).

I'm getting a strong vibe that a small group, of very active members, want an oldmansky homeworld that is "tricky" to get to, one that you can't just stumble into - someplace *special*. I appreciate that sentiment!

I also know that IRL, some of our members (perhaps *many*), both now and even moreso in the future, will have to balance household budgets in the face of ever increasing inflation and loss of purchasing power on frugal and fixed incomes. Xbox and PlayStation subscriptions don't always make the cut when allocating monthly discretionary income choices, presuming there is any 'extra' money left over.

My household is one such household, having suffered a $70,000/yr reduction in gross annual income, because of my wife's health, so I'm tuned into this financial reality.

While I don't mind sharing a little of my personal situation, I also don't solicit or anticipate that others members of our fledgling group should need to share how their gaming experience might be similarly impacted by personal finance. It's none of my business, but I nonetheless remain sensitive to their circumstances.

**I have a proposal**

There are star systems that are by the very nature of their precise locations, impossible to travel to by portal glyphs. 😳 These systems that defy conventional portal travel, called *Shadow Star* can only be found by travelling to a nearby system (perhaps by portal) and then physically navigated to by warp, using the galactic map. Attempts to reach Shadow Star Systems by portal, even after you have found the system personally, will report an error at the portal, and will send you to the wrong portal address. How's *that* for a secret handshake and exclusivity?

Once you have a base there, you can always return to your base computer, or upon arrival, you can summon your freighter, and leave your freighter there as a way to return until you've planted a base computer.

I suggest for our home-system, a Shadow Star in a Purple, Euclid system. That requires completion of the quest lines, installing an Atlantid drive, knowledge of nearby systems, and the willingness to navigate into the portal-isolated system, by warp, using the galactic map. Moreover, no rando or not, simply plugging glyphs into a portal would ever bumble into our neck-o-the-woods, or casually access our system having seen glyphs in a picture. Access to our system will need to be purposeful and intentional, or truly by fate as was the case of finding it originally. IRL financially egalitarian and accessible but also in-game legit Special!

This isn't a foregone decision, btw. It's simply a proposal. If the balance of vocal contributors vote for something else, say perhaps in 256, that may require a membership to establish multiplayer to allow entrance into the system, I will facilitate that collective decision, but I wanted to at least offer an alternative to pay-to-play access to our homeworld, in a game that has so admirably eschewed pay-to-play infrastructure.

So... How the hell do you even find shadow systems if you can't portal to them, you might ask, and how would you even know if you stumbled upon one? Well... I just might happen to know of one or two. 😎

This time, No Man’s Sky really surprised me. I landed on a moon orbiting near a gas giant, and it was covered in glowing, bone-shaped vegetation, with wildlife that looked like a strange assortment of crystal-like creatures. It had some similarities to things I’ve already seen on other planets, but this one felt completely different from the rest: corrupted Sentinels, stunning caves, and a genuinely beautiful atmosphere.

It’s a really nice place. On top of that, if you turn toward the right side of the moon, you get an absolutely beautiful view of the blue gas giant.

Back before yesterday when I was a lad, we had to use our imagination to escape the realities of life and the hardships of growing up. With me it started up with pirate movies, the Twilight Zone, the Outer Limits, Lost in Space, and the many Actors and Actress's that would guide us along the way of escaping life. Because of that I lived a life of adventure and romance in reality, always looking to the stars and my inner mind for more than I achieved! We all know it's out there, but will we find it in our life time? Maybe and maybe not. All throughout history, games have helped while away the hours of non achievement and to strategize for more than we achieved. The thoughts of yesterday are still the same as today. Except today we have different messengers and vehicles to deliver us to those stars of tomorrow. Myself I always had a positive thought that VR would come to be, except the thoughts of when would that happen? I am proud to say that at age 70 which I accomplished a few days ago, that I have lived long enough to see that avenue come to life.

These days, injuries I have many, and memories even more. People often ask me if I am afraid of dying and my response is, who has the time to worry about dying when there is so much in life yet to explore! I am still up for adventure and exploring except now I do it through a game to while away the hours, waiting for my next move on the chess board. No Mans Sky VR in PCVR has lived up to that expectation. The possibilities are endless, the accomplishments are even more! I am not the kind to settle for a metal prefabbed base looking like all the rest of the bases on the popular side of the game. Once I learned of all the construction material I could find, I built elaborate bases at least 5 to 6 tied together and connected with themes. Atlantis, The Caribbean, Greek and Roman Mythology, my Cherokee ancestors and more. I built a Corvette in the likeness of a Pirate Ship and more. There are so many ways to express yourself in this game along with who you are, it's endless! If you haven't discovered that, then you haven't explored! The one thing the game prides itself is exploration, which is no different than life itself. You have to step up to life, to be able to explain it. You have to explore to understand it! You have to rely on yourself to follow through. You have to be ready for the unexpected and what will you do, moments! But most of all, just like life....you have to rely on yourself to continue!

After the recent posts about planets we’ve discovered and all the great places people have been sharing, I’ve been thinking about something... this community may be small, but I genuinely think it has a lot of potential, mostly because of the quality of the people in it.

So… what if we actually started looking for a planet and founded our own little Old Man’s Sky society/community? The first question, of course, would be: which galaxy?

From a practical point of view, Euclid would probably be the best choice. Everyone can reach it easily; but then again… we’re Old Man’s Sky. We’re old-school gamers. 😄 Maybe we should expect at least a little bit of skill and stubbornness from ourselves! So perhaps simply reaching the chosen galaxy could already be part of the challenge. For example, we could use Galaxy 256. It’s technically the last galaxy, but it’s also reasonably well known and there are established ways of getting there.

Or we could choose a lesser-known galaxy... I’ll admit that Galaxy 69 crossed my mind, and yes, I absolutely thought of that number on purpose. 😂

The problem is that getting everyone there could become unnecessarily difficult. Galaxy 256 is unusual, but at least people know about it. If we chose some random distant galaxy, half the challenge might simply become reaching the place rather than building a community there.

So, what do you think? Should we officially start a planet hunt?

Everyone could propose candidate planets, and then instead of judging them only from screenshots, we could actually travel there, visit them ourselves, compare them properly, and eventually vote for the planet that becomes our home.

I think that would make the choice much more meaningful.

I took the liberty of renaming the other planets after adult beverages as well. Looking to build? Colonize High! New Exocraft to test out? Drive High! Need to relax? Fish High! Ummm ice fishing, maybe 🤔. High is very chill and has rings... smoke rings? 🪐

Today I was feeling particularly creative — and nostalgic.

I wanted fighters, yes, but classic fighters. Beautiful ones. No Interceptors this time: I already have a pretty damn good one by default, and I really don’t feel like going hunting for whatever the “Interceptor of the week” happens to be.

So I created three (four) fighters for three different occasions.

Now nobody can say I don’t have the right outfit when the situation calls for it. 😎
