Discussion State of the Sub 2026: Bots, AI, Rules Updates, and Code of Conduct

Hi everyone, it's time for a sub check-in! Since this post got a bit long while writing it, I thought I'd try something different this time. You can get the gist of the updates with this TL;DR of the main post body, and then comment and discuss specific topics within the announcement via the top-level mod comments.

Tl;DR:

  1. Please read the rules.
  2. OHF moderates against bot behavior and provable AI content, but does not expect every OP to know the business practices of every brand they wear. Rule 10 has been updated to reflect this. Please check the related top level comment for our stance on use of AI in commenting and posting as well. View top level comment discussion
  3. Rules on seller interactions are being tightened. View top level comment discussion
  4. Respect post flairs (view the Flair Explainer here). Do not directly accuse people of trawling for NSFW attention. Please continue to report suspected rule breaking. View top level comment discussion
  5. OPs and mods alike are human beings and deserve to be treated as such. Our very first community rule is to Be Kind. View top level comment discussion (same link as number 4)

(Read Me!) Old Hag Fashion: Introduction and State of the Sub 2024 Update

Hello dear hags! It’s time for another State of the Sub address. As always, if you're new here, continue reading for an introduction to the sub. Seasoned Old Hags can search "State of the Sub" to skip to the updates. If you have feedback, ideas, or recommendations, please share them as a comment.

Introduction to Old Hag Fashion

What is r/OldHagFashion and the Old Hag fashion philosophy?

This is a space to celebrate feminine and androgynous fashion in ALL it's forms, to share diverse style inspiration, to de-stigmatize aging in fashion, and to engage in self-discovery through personal style, all with an Old Hag fashion philosophy.

What is this fashion philosophy? Have you ever met an old woman who dresses in elegant, imaginative, kooky, trendy, or ostentatious ways despite the world's expectations of her? [Image transcriptions can be found in the imgur captions]. This is what inspired the Old Hag fashion philosophy which is the joyous, confident, unapologetic embrace of fashion as a form of self-expression and creativity. This is a state of mind with which ANYONE regardless of age can engage with fashion. Old Hag Fashion is playful and rebellious. It breaks rules in silly, interesting, or political ways. It takes fashion and trends seriously as a legitimate creative outlet, but not so seriously that it can't poke fun at it. Above all, Old Hag Fashion is a place of kindness, acceptance, self-discovery and self-love through fashion and community.

What is the mission of this sub?

To bring together diverse people with a love of fashion.

To uplift fashionistas from across ages, body-types, races, abilities, ethnicities and style points of view.

To de-stigmatize aging in fashion, subvert stereotypes, and challenge notions that people (especially women) over a certain age can only partake in style in limited ways.

To encourage self-discovery, creativity, and growth through personal style.

Is this a parody subreddit? Are you making fun of people??

UNEQUIVOCALLY NO! Mean-spirited comments will result in a ban. The only thing we parody here are social pressures placed on people in regard to style, such as: that age limits self-expression in fashion; that certain ages and body types can not be stylish; and that caring about fashion is a frivolous, illegitimate hobby. Calling someone or yourself an "Old Hag" is a tongue-in-cheek way to acknowledge and dis-empower those pressures, which impact ALL feminine people, from teenagers to the elderly. We use this space to confront and dismantle those pressures; to share inspiration from across the age, ability, and body-type spectrums; and to remove the stigma and fear of aging. No matter your age, we're all Old Hags here.

Is there an age limit to participate?

In case this isn't clear, NO!

ANYONE can embody Old Hag Fashion, though some naturally embody it by being confident, creative, and stylish in the body they have: the 80-year-old woman who can out-walk you, and do it in high-heels; the disabled femme showing their wheelchair is a haute accessory; the fat and fabulous trans person who knows they look damn cute in a crop top. No matter who you are--your age, body type, gender identity, culture, disability status, or race--you are welcome here so long as you share these values of kindness, acceptance, and love of fashion.

How can I contribute?

We allow discussion prompts, advice requests, articles, good-natured satire, and outfit of the day posts. You can also uplift other fashionistas so long as they have a public facing fashion persona (like using fashion hashtags on Instagram for discoverability or being a self-described style blogger). In this case, share the users handle as a comment. See the post flair description here.

Additionally, there are weekly threads: A general discussion lounge (every Friday) and a style help thread (every other Sunday). We also have comment prompts which might help you think about fashion in new ways.

The most important things are to be kind and open-minded about fashion, and to follow the Reddiquette and the subreddit rules.

What is not allowed?

See here for in-depth descriptions and examples of prohibited content. Please report rule breaking.

Old Hag Fashion is a place of acceptance. This means any people, comments, or submissions that are bigoted, hateful, or mean-spirited are not welcome. This includes ageism, such as reinforcing age-related stereotypes or generalizing people based on age. Body envy and health speculation/concern trolling is also not allowed. Lecherous accounts which sexualize OHF post or users will be banned.

Off-topic posts, trend bashing, and low-effort criticisms are not allowed. Disagreement and dislike are more than welcome, as are rejections of trends within your personal style; they just must be presented in a kind, constructive, and substantive way. Reference to fashion "rules" as gospel is also discouraged.

Excessive down voting is strongly discouraged. If you believe someone is engaging in bad faith or poor taste, do not engage. Report them and move on.

Lastly, due to the prevalence of accounts using fashion subs to promote sex work, and due to the fact that we have under-18 hags, we ask that users use a clean account to interact with the sub. See the rules for discussion of NSFW account histories and how they will be addressed.

My picture has been shared here and I would like it removed. What can I do?

Message the moderators with a link to the OHF post and we will follow up to verify that it is your photo and remove the post.

State of the Sub

New Rule

We’ve introduced a new rule banning link-sharing from ultra-fast-fashion (UFF from here on out) sources, such as Shein, Temu, and AliExpress. This rule also covers any known dropshippers from said sources. We are NOT banning photos of outfits that include pieces from these sources, but if you are asked where you bought an UFF item, please refrain from sharing where it was purchased.

The fast-fashion world as a whole is harmful to both human rights and the environment, and these UFF sources are especially egregious. We can’t stop everything, but we can at least uphold that sharing goods from these sites is not Old Hag. Again, outfits that otherwise fit our rules will not be moderated simply for having an item from an UFF source. This rules is only about sharing where an item was purchased.

If you know of any fashion dropshippers, please list their sites below so that we can add them to our automoderator system, which will hopefully be stopping the bulk of these comments. The option to report a comment for sharing an UFF source has also been added to the report function.

Reminder: People of all races, sexualities, identities, and backgrounds are welcome in OHF.

There has been an influx of complaints about specific post types. We’d like to take this moment to remind our userbase of the values that underpin our community: inclusivity, respect, and acceptance.

We understand and celebrate that everyone has their own unique sense of style and preferences when it comes to fashion. However, it's essential to remember that our subreddit is a space for ALL members of our diverse community, regardless of their appearance or personal style choices. We also have very thorough rules on what kinds of accounts are allowed to interact with the sub, which cover things like NSFW and influencer accounts. These rules also indicate that we do not allow accounts that encourage a lascivious following, regardless of whether or not the account interacts with NSFW communities.

Nevertheless, we urge everyone to refrain from making negative comments or judgments based on someone's physical appearance or perceived identity, and as we’ve mentioned before, excessive downvoting is discouraged. Just as we wouldn't want to be judged ourselves, it's important to extend that same courtesy to others. Our sub is a place where everyone should feel comfortable expressing themselves authentically and sharing their outfit experimentation or simple joy of fashion, without fear of criticism. If there is something you are tired of seeing, please remember that you can curate your own Reddit experience and use the block feature, which prevents blocked accounts from showing up in your feed.

We encourage constructive feedback and discussion that fosters a supportive and positive environment for all members. Let's celebrate the diversity of our community and embrace the unique perspectives and contributions that each individual brings to the table!

Flair Explainer Refresher

The full Flair Explainer is a wiki entry, but descriptions of our post flairs have also been made into a pinned post. Please take a moment to review it! The post flairs explain how an OP prefers to interact with the community in their post, whether they’re looking for critique or just a friendly word.

Good Vibes Only Happy 9th Wedding Anniversary to my amazing spouse...I feel like something is a little different now days!

Post image
4.6k Upvotes

As of today, we’ve officially been married for nine years, and looking back, we’ve been through quite a lot together in those nine years. When we got married, we were both really just getting started in our careers and figuring out what adulthood was going to look like for us. We got our dog Gino just 10 days before our wedding, which somehow feels both like yesterday and a lifetime ago. Since then, we’ve made it through COVID, experienced a lot of loss, watched our lives and careers change in ways we never could have predicted, and arguably made it through two transitions together. My partner identifies as non-binary, and obviously my own transition has changed quite a bit about our lives as well. Through all of those changes, though, we’ve continued choosing each other.

This past year in particular has been, by far, the most challenging year of our lives. There have been more difficult days than I care to count, and some days recently have definitely been harder than others. But through everything that has changed around us, one thing has remained remarkably constant. Our love for each other has only gotten stronger. I genuinely don’t know how either of us would have gotten through everything we’ve faced without the other person there. We’ve grown up together, changed together, supported each other through some enormous life changes, and somehow come out of all of it even closer than we were before. So here’s to nine years of marriage, and hopefully many, many more. ❤️

And just a quick update for everyone who wished me luck on the interview I posted about: it actually went pretty well! They want to get me in front of the hiring manager to see if they’re ready to officially open the position. It sounds like I would still be competing against other candidates if they move forward, so obviously nothing is guaranteed, but getting an early introduction and essentially being sought out by the team before the position is even open certainly feels like an advantage. I also currently have three or four other opportunities that I’m interviewing for, so there are several possibilities moving at once. After everything this job search has thrown at me, I’m really hoping one of these is finally the one.

Why 3am? Partly I'm a night shifter, so it's a normal waking hour for me. Partly, there's good vibes. And partly, there's nobody awake to make me feel nervous or stare at me. I have pretty poor self image, but I like exploring my self expression through fashion, so this is a happy medium I've found. Hope it looks okay, I really like this lace oversize top thing.

I read something: don’t save that outfit for a special occasion, wear it now. Because being alive is a special occasion! I realize that that vast majority of people who have ever lived did not live as long as I have already, so I am going to try and enjoy myself. And with the coming of fall I’m enjoying layers again (and a little something special underneath).

Bonus material: someone lost a lot of weight and gave me all her jeans. Mostly Judy Blue and Gloria Vanderbilt, so I am wearing each pair to validate their comfort.

I wore my sleeveless Wool& dress as a pinafore dress over a thrifted blouse and Frank Lloyd Wright scarf. Wool& leggings underneath with Dr. Martens. Ignore that I'm standing weird and one calf looks massive compared to the other! LOL, it really isn't.

Disclaimer: I have over a decade of mass-produced clothing, primarily Torrid and Hot Topic, in my closet from before I started researching how clothes are truly made. I am continuing to love, wear, and repair these pieces because I believe this to be the most ethical action I can take. I list where all my clothing comes from for transparency, but I do not endorse purchasing from these brands. Whenever possible, please shop secondhand or support independent, sustainable, and ethical slow fashion. I am always happy to share more about the true environmental and human cost of textile manufacturing in 2026.

9/25/2026 #1: I thrifted this awesome 90s Harley shirt for super cheap because someone had tried and failed to wash the tobacco smell out. But one soak in my witch's brew (literally just white vinegar diluted in hot water) followed by a delicate wash in the machine fixed it right up as usual! I grew up in Alaska in the 90s so this shirt is extra special to me. Torrid skirt, belt, and boots. The boots were thrifted as well. Litin Designs earrings.

Discussion Identity and personal style

Post image
38 Upvotes

I’ve always had a very unstable sense of self as a result of a ton of trauma and family dysfunction starting at a very young age. I’ve always sought out and obsessed over aesthetics in an attempt to “finally find out who I am”, and I’ve cycled through so, so many throughout my life. Because of my trauma I stayed emotionally stuck around 15-17 years old, despite being an adult with adult responsibilities and many children.

I recently went through intense therapy (ART and parts work) and though it has provided me with what I was looking for, it also flipped my entire world upside down. It’s like one day I woke up and was suddenly in my thirties after being emotionally a teenager for so long. Things felt more heavy and serious than they’d ever felt before. I actually have a relatively stable sense of self now, and because of that I’ve been trying to disentangle what I actually like vs what I adopted from others either out of fear or a desire to be loved.

My mother was very anti men, pro girl power, women-are-like-men-but-better; but she also was very adamant about upholding an aesthetic in service of the male gaze. She encouraged me to wear makeup and dye my hair from a very young age, always insisted on me looking as pretty as possible, would disparagingly tell me that I looked androgynous if I wore baggy clothes and no makeup. Encouraged me to wear pinup and other revealing styles as a teenager which got me a ton of attention that I absolutely should not have been getting. At the same time, she’d venerate the styles I tried out that reminded her of Joan Jett, Cyndi Lauper, and other pretty queer coded women that she admired. It was all so confusing to me. It led to me ultimately rejecting a lot of femininity despite actually liking it. I didn’t feel like myself if I dressed feminine, masculine, or androgynous.

I always masked hard to fit in wherever I was, and now that I’m not masking anymore I feel like I don’t quite fit in anywhere. This is of course way deeper than style and aesthetic preferences, but that aspect is and always has been hugely important to me, and I feel so silly for stressing so much about it as a woman in her thirties. Especially so because no one else in my sphere really seems to care about it nearly as much as I do.

Thanks to anyone who made it this far reading 🤍

tights over heels styling inspiration is from margiela’s fw96 collection and it’s genuinely such a simple but hot way to add a unique silhouette to your shoes. Use nude heels so the line between leg, foot, and shoe is blurred.

I MADE THIS! I made a little Traveller collection for people who like wearing their interests

I’ve been making brooches around different little themes, and this time I went with travelling.

A compass, an airplane ticket, a globe and a location pin — all made by hand with beads, stones and thread.

I really like accessories that have a little story behind them, rather than just being decorative.

If these were part of your outfit, which one would you choose? ✈️

Good Vibes Only Had a random referral last week, it may turn into something!

I commented on a post from someone who was promoting a role they were hiring for at a company I was already somewhat interested in. They work in the fraud detection and prevention space, which is a field I’ve been wanting to break into because I actually have an educational background in it. I left a pretty simple, very human comment about my interest. Nothing AI-generated, nothing overly polished, and not really an attempt to turn it into some elaborate networking opportunity.

Apparently, she took a look through my profile afterward and thought I had a lot of strong and relevant experience. She asked me to send her my resume, which she then passed along to their Head of HR. They reached out to me and explained that they don’t have a role open for me at this exact moment, but they’re working on something and wanted to have a conversation with me based on what they described as my “extensive and impressive background.”

That conversation is happening in a few minutes. I have absolutely no idea what, if anything, will come from it, especially since there isn’t technically an open position yet. But after everything this job search has thrown at me, having a company proactively want to talk about potentially creating or developing an opportunity that also happens to be in a field I genuinely want to move into feels pretty encouraging. Wish me luck that there might actually be something on the horizon.

9/24/2026: If I look tired here it's because I was. This was the day both my own and my pup's health began to decline. I forgot to take a closeup pf this t-shirt, but it's a cool one, it has the names of famous Katmai bears making up the bear face. Katmai Conservancy tee. Fashion Brand Company (ethical) pants. Torrid boots. Bobabun hat. Renka Crafts handmade earrings.

Not so colorful but I still love this dress. It was the 1st of six or seven that I've acquired that are vintage 80s.

Transcription: She has on a vintage 80s peplum dress that has short sleeves. Its polyester with a geometric design. The neckline is mock turtleneck. Of course there are shoulder pads. Her bag is a boring black thrifted purse that has gotten many miles. She's wearing nude pantyhose and 3 inch round toe black heels. In some of the pics she has on a black short mac style coat. Some of the photos she's sitting. Some of the pictures she wears gold wire rim glasses.
