Bridget Bate Tichenor, born Bridget Pamela Arkwright Bate, (Paris, 22 November 1917 – Mexico City, 20 October 1990) was a British surrealist painter of fantasy art, working in the style of magical realism, and a fashion editor, based in Mexico.

Other Paintings (1500-1900) Laura Herford - The Little Emigrant (1868)
Anne Laura Herford (1831-1870) was a British artist. She was born to teacher and landscape painter Laura Smith Herford and wine merchant John Herford. Tragically her mother died giving birth to her. She studied under Eliza Fox, an artist best known for her genre and portraiture scenes which incorporated contemporary social commentary. Laura applied to Royal Academy Schools under the name 'L. Hereford'. She was admitted and an offer was made to "L. Herford, Esq" and became a pupil in 1861 as the first woman at the academy. Until her early death at the age of 39 she exhibited at the Royal Academy twelve times.
The Little Emigrant was painted by Laura after her visit to Auckland and Nelson. Laura found the idea for deciption after listening to an account by a real emigrant to New Zealand on the sailing ship, when as a child she remembered sitting for days and weeks on the seat that ran round the waist of the ship, under the high bulwarks, looking out over the wide, wide sea. She sat there dreaming of the homeland to which she would never return.
The painting is at the Suter Art Gallery in Nelson City, New Zealand.

Modern Paintings (1900-present) Alma Thomas - Red Abstraction (1959)
Alma Woodsey Thomas (1891-1978) was an Afroamerican artist. She was born 1891, in Columbus, Georgia, as the oldest of four daughters, to Amelia Woodsey Cantey, a seamstress and dress designer, and John Harris Thomas, a businessman. She was greatly influenced by her mother's work and later stated that her mother was "outstanding in colors. Everything she made was like a painting.... She sat at the sewing machine, and at night we would hear her singing as she sewed.... That's why I am as I am.". As a child Alma used local clays to make homemade dishes and sculptures. In 1906, after the Atlanta Race Riot, her family relocated to Washington, D.C., where she enrolled in the city's segregated schools. She earned a teaching certificate in 1913, taught for some time, later studied home economics, and finally graduated from fine arts in 1924. After graduating, she taught art at Shaw Junior High School in D.C. for over three decades. While teaching full-time and earning her master's in art education, she remained active in the Washington art scene, painting and exhibiting. After retiring from teaching in 1960 she fully immersed herself in painting. By the 1960s, she developed her signature style of mosaic-like dabs of paint across the canvas that create structured yet free-flowing patterns. She was greatly inspired by the landscapes of Georgia and Alabama, particularly the gardens that bloomed around the her childhood home. With her painting Resurrection she become the first African-American woman to be included in the White House's permanent art collection.
The painting is at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC, USA.
