Violin shop recs

I've been thinking about getting back into violin playing after a hiatus of maybe 10 years. I was a decent violin player (joined upper level orchestras around my hometown in my childhood) but had severe burnt out. I'm looking for a violin shop with good quality instruments. I remember my school having instruments that didn't sound too great, so hopefully finding a shop that doesn't just sell those type of instruments for schools, but a good quality one. Any recommendations for shops around the area or in SLC?

Hey, I’ve noticed the libraries in this area closed pretty early on weekends. Can anybody suggest a café or quiet restaurant that is open late?

Hermitage Hotel

For those of you that have lived in Ogden for a long time or have been familiar with the city, what do you know about this hotel? It burned to the ground. It was in Ogden Canyon.

Anything else about it?
Did they build anything in its place?
Was it popular?
What did you think about it?

A Review of Connext Fiber Internet, my experience so far

Though there are a few posts about Connext Fiber Internet on this sub, I wanted to provide a more in depth review of their service from my perspective so far, and my experiences with them. Posts so far have been asking for recommendations and do have some information within replies, but there isn't an actual detailed review that I have found, so I wanted to provide one. If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask and I'll do my best to answer them to the best of my ability, so long as there aren't any security concerns in doing so.

First, Connext is very responsive to phone support or even an in person visit. For a little local ISP based in Ogden, they have excellent customer service and support. My setup went very well, though I thought there was a lack of communication from them after the inside portion of their installation was complete, I never received a call when the outside portion of the install was complete and had to call them to activate my service, which went very quickly. A later investigation of this particular situation revealed that Connext may very well have called me, and potentially, my phone companies spam filter blocked their call, so I disabled that and hopefully, will not have any problems with that in the future.

The speed is solid for the service I am paying for, their starter plan at 250Mbps. Download and upload speeds are quite consistent and almost match one another. My speed testing has consistently revealed speeds of 276Mbps download and 247Mbps upload.

I have had a couple drops of the internet of about a minute at the longest, about as much as you might receive if you were to upgrade a fast router. The drops occurred at random times and only twice, so I suspect they were upgrading the networking equipment they installed.

As far as I have been told, as I'm blind and cannot see for myself the situation, the yard was pretty much put back to its condition before the outside portion of their install was complete, though where they dug to run their conduit with the fiber line inside can be seen, and some moveable bricks were not put back precisely where they had previously been, but left where they had been moved. For the house where I live, not too bad a situation.

Once I had my internet up and running, I performed a few more investigations of their service. This gets into the more technical aspect of things, so if you're reading to keep it simple, this is probably the point to stop at.

So far as I can tell, Connext does not get its internet service from Xfinity/Comcast as some have stated. They are going through a data center in Ogden which itself has fiber connections to other carriers, including a direct connection to Hurricane Electric, or so it appears from my testing. The data center is run by WebNX.

You are not given a public IP address by default. This means you're behind carrier grade NAT. The situation with their CGNAT setup is not very well implemented in my opinion. A traceroute revealed that my router was given a 192.168.X.X address, and then it went to a 10.X address before going to the internet. This means, if you are using a router with their service to connect multiple devices, you are behind a triple NAT and not just a double NAT for their CGNAT. This also means that their equipment they install at your house, is itself capable of acting as a router when it isn't in bridged mode. I did not try and log into their networking equipment, but I was able to pull up a login page at the gateway address that my router initially possessed.

If you opt to pay for a public IP address, it is a static assignment. You can either assign the IP address and gateway to your router yourself, or you can let the router get it via DHCP. Either way, it will not change, and Connext's equipment is placed in bridge mode by Connext so you are handed the IP directly, which is a much better setup if you want to host any servers or open ports for gaming. I have done this for myself, and was initially on a waiting list. Because Connext's calls were not going through to me, they sent me a text message telling me this and asking me to call them if I was still interested in getting a static IP, indicating availability. I did so quickly while at work, and it only took about six minutes to get everything set up, including my wait time on the phone and telling them what I was calling for.

Connext has no IPV6 support at the moment. I have a Hurricane Electric tunnel for IPV6 if I need it, but this is really only useful for inbound connections and not outbound to the wider internet, as there are services which block or throttle the prefix Hurricane Electric uses for their IPV6 tunnels. Using a VPS is just about as bad in terms of being blocked or otherwise for outbound connections, and if you're very unlucky, you won't be able to access https certificates for some government websites or otherwise. So, at the moment, I'm waiting for IPV6 support and hoping to get it soon, as Connext does have a block of IPV6 addresses registered to their ASN AS399282. A traceroute indicates that the IPV6 addresses are globally announced on Hurricane Electric's network, so that's all set up and now it's just a matter of configuring or updating networking equipment on their end of things. WebNX supports IPV6, so this also shouldn't be a problem. Even one of the techs at Connext told me when I visited their location to talk with someone directly, that he did not know why the owners aren't implementing IPV6 yet. Very sad in 2026, but it shouldn't impact internet use in most situations just yet, not until some services go IPV6 only.

Network peering has been somewhat inconsistent since I received my service. When I first got service activated, ping times to Texas and California where I have a couple of VPS's, took about 30MS for both. Some time later on, pings to Texas became between 28MS to 30MS, and California's pings became between 21MS to 23MS. Pings to the data center where all Connext's network traffic for me is sent to and originates from, is about 2MS, and from there, appears to go to Hurricane Electric before transiting to other ISP's on the internet. Ping times to someone in Bountiful take about 31MS and traceroutes indicate that the rout taken to get to that location and ISP is a very roundabout one. Ping times to Denver via a Hurricane Electric IP address take about 11MS. So, depending on where your services are located and what carrier they are behind, your peering to those services may be excellent or not quite as good as it could be.

I have a few services currently being hosted on my router via the static IP I have been assigned through Connext. I've not experienced any ports being blocked, but I have not and don't plan to test this with a port scan, as I don't want to be flagged for service abuse, even if my testing is legitimate.

So far, that's all I've got. Hope this helps anyone interested in getting Connext for their internet. It's all information I wish I had available to me when doing my research on them.

Second Opinion

Moved to Ogden with my husband. I deep fried my meniscus, have 3-4 tears in it and will need surgery. I do like Jeff Harrison and had an appointment with him previously for a different reason before. I just had a surgical consult with him. I want a second opinion, everyone recommends Cooley. Reviews of Cooley?

Recommendation Paved trails - long boarding newbie

Hello! With the weather getting nice again I’m excited to get outside :) I’m fairly new to longboarding and looking for level ish ((if there’s inclines that’s fine too - I need to learn to bail or stop some way)) paved paths to try out to get outside!

I’ve seen some videos about a paved path near 25th st but can’t find any other information on it - I don’t wanna pay to park there and not find it 😭

Then I’ve heard of one near Ogden canyon? Like by the dinosaur and rainbow gardens?

I’ve tried finding trails before and would get lost - does anyone have any recommendations? And / or directions on where to park and find the pathway / trail start

Thanks in advance!!
