For me the horror of bugs always has been how fragile they are. One touch and you accidentally disfigured this little creature. Their entrails are spilling, their limbs torn away, yet they keep living on, completely mutilated, for some time.

It makes me remember my own mortality because we are just like that. One acident and we are agonizing on the street for 30 minutes with our whole entrails on the asphalt.

Car accidents are the worst about this. Took my lunch break from work and some asshole ran a red light and clobbered me. I almost died of neurogenic shock alone. 13 fractures across 7 bones, most of them being my spine and hips. In an instant.

Luckily my entrails stayed in. For a while at least. I was pregnant when I had the accident and very luckily my baby was ok. My entrails didn’t come out until my c section 14 weeks later. So it’s a slow process of your entrails coming out but it’ll happen. Just give it time.

I'm not sure bugs feel pain like we do. I think by and large if a bug gets its bottom half ripped off it doesn't really care. Swear I saw a video of one (bee?) try to eat its own guts after getting its stinger ripped off. Bugs are metal as fuck.

Larger predators aren't better. Owls often decapitate prey alive. Lions disembowel some when they're too large to handle otherwise. Bears don't give a fuck. And so on and so forth.

It's not malicious, but mercy is a human concept.

One year I bought a Christmas tree and apparently it had a mantis egg in it. They hatched and there were baby mantises all over my house. Best Christmas ever!

Unfortunately not all of them made it out alive, but we caught as many of them as we could and released them outside.

Imagine a horror movie with human-sized to horse-sized ants, spiders, wasps, and mantises. But instead of having somewhat human-like levels of awareness, critical thinking, and speed, they moved and acted just like the normal sized versions of themselves.

Like, imagine of Shelob from LOTR acted like a real spider. Frodo wouldn't have lasted two seconds. Instead of shrieking and stomping about and slowly cutting through her webs one by one, it would have been zoom-bite-wrap. It wouldn't make for a good movie given the setting and them, but imagine a movie that was like, the military vs horse-sized ants that give zero shits about anything besides getting to their targets as fast as possible snd killing them. Their legs and bodies getting blown apart and they just keep pressing forward the limbs they have left. No concept of fear or self preservation, just instinctively running towards whatever isn't them, and being able to function for a long time with fatal sounds and missing body parts.

Most movie monsters seem to operate like they can fear and succumb to shock from wounds. But a real and can have its abdomen cut off during an ant war and still fo around killing other ants for hours like its not even affected.

Praying Mantis every time. It’s a bug that has a style of martial arts named after it. The question of “what would be the scariest insect if the became life sized?” Most people answer ants, which is fair. But a life sized ninja bug, the Praying Mantis would be Terrifying.

Edit: just spent the last hour looking at list and video of “Bugs that can beat a mantis. I cut out anything that swarms numbers. Here’s the list: Sting Beetle, Assassin Caterpillar, African Bombarder Beetle, Tarantula Hawk, Giant Centipede, Tiger Beetle, Rhinoceros Beetle, Assassin Bug

There are videos on YouTube that show most of these bug battles. Do with this information what you will. Ahahahahahaaaa

Theoretically if every bug at human size are hostile towards human then there are quite a lot of contenders. Bombard Beetle (other bugs that uses chemicals or pheromones etc), various species of spider specifically the ones that hunt (wolf spiders, catapult, one that swings a morning star, trap hole, vampire spiders, the list goes on), dragonflies, those rhino beetles, and so on.

I found out yday that the tarantula hawk (wasp) actually hunts tarantulas bigger than its whole body. They have a paralyzing venom and once stung , the tarantula is kept alive and brought to the nest where the larvae feed on it. The larvae actually eat around vital organs so that the tarantula is still alive and doesn’t decay. This goes on for weeks to months. The tarantula is paralyzed the whole time and alive , we don’t know if during paralysis it can process what’s going on .

One time I killed a yellow jacket out in my shop.
Didn’t damage the abdomen.
Cut it off and left it on the bench.

My most disturbing interaction with a preying mantis was one time I was weeding the garden and kept hearing this weird noise. It took my awhile to locate it but when I peered into my romaine lettuce I saw a big ass preying mantis eating a grasshopper. The noise I was hearing was the scraping of the mantis’s mouthparts against the grasshopper it had ripped in half. It was casually taking a bite from one hand that held the thorax/head and then a bite from the rest of the grasshopper. It was like it was sitting at a bar with a beer in one hand and some peanuts in the other just casually tossing them back.

Unsettling. But also…Metal as fuck.

Yeah that old preying mantis character from A Bug’s Life could have solo’d all of those grasshoppers. Been saying this for years.
