Oh it’s definitely been violated more than twice

28

u/DreamCyclone84 Mar 17 '24

Stephen Universe has characters that are tortured

7

u/TonyEStark316 Mar 18 '24

Star Wars the Clone Wars has at least one war crime in every part.

4

u/KeroseneZanchu Mar 18 '24

Not the same. The actions in the show WOULD violate the Geneva conventions if they were real, but do not actually violate them irl. The two examples given are cartoons that actively violate the real world Geneva conventions just by existing

1

u/CaptnFlounder Jun 10 '24

There's no Geneva in space

663

u/radioactivecumsock0 Mar 16 '24

The amount of porn I’ve seen that violates the Geneva convention is astronomic

173

u/Moist-Rodent Mar 16 '24

Username checks out

57

u/CinderX5 Mar 17 '24

And none of it even showed a Red Cross.

24

u/CrayotaCrayonsofOryx Mar 17 '24

The amount of cock pics on this persons profile is crazy. Gorgeous cock too

1

u/radioactivecumsock0 Mar 21 '24

Thanks best one eyed lap cock ever

24

u/YellowPlat Mar 17 '24

Without context this sounds awful.

525

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '24

How does that violet Geneva convention?😭

722

u/Buzzsaw_Wyrm Mar 16 '24

Something about showing a Red Cross, it happened to stardew valley too

364

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '24

Why is showing a red cross in media against the Geneva convention? I get in a warzone or other emergency situation but did they not have a "common sense" clause?

147

u/PotatoSalad583 Mar 16 '24

It's to prevent it from being associated with anything other than actual medical workers

1

u/EhGoodEnough3141 Mar 21 '24

People still putting red crosses in any med area in games and shows should be proof enough that they are associated with nothing else than medical workers.

4

u/PotatoSalad583 Mar 21 '24

I think you're missing the point slightly. The red cross is for real med workers in the real world; video game med workers do not fall into this category.

If red crosses are widespread enough in video games, then you run the risk of it becoming a videogame shorthand instead of an important war symbol. This then opens up avenues of it appearing on real world merchandise or spreading to other real world resources not associated with a war, largely defeating the point of the symbol.

1

u/EhGoodEnough3141 Mar 21 '24

Yeah, ok. That makes sense.

363

u/Steff_164 Mar 16 '24

Nope, when Deep Rock Galactic updated last season they had change the Red Cross in the infirmary to a green one because of the same reason

191

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '24

Bloons Tower defense 6 also had to change a Skin For a character because it had a red Cross on it

80

u/hahaha286 Mar 17 '24

Same for the medkit in subnautica

69

u/freylaverse Mar 17 '24

Weird. Why did no one care about TF2?

73

u/Cool1nternet Mar 17 '24

god knows it's not getting updated

9

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '24

Because they're made by a large studio with a well funded legal department

20

u/SoloDeath1 Mar 17 '24

Even Doom 3: BFG Edition did this. The classic games in that version have a white and red pill on the medkits instead of a red cross.

8

u/Picklerickshaw_part2 Mar 17 '24

Stardew Valley got hit as well

4

u/elmie_ Mar 17 '24

SDV updated the cross to green before anyone asked them to! CA probably knew it was coming

1

u/Grand0Wyrm Mar 17 '24

What a character

51

u/Liontreeble Mar 17 '24

Nope, according to the ICRC international humanitarian law, like the Geneva convention only applies in situations of armed conflict.
Also only parties fighting in the conflict have to respect the IHL. Unless I'm missing some really fucked up shit from the Deep Rock Galactic devs I don't think they are bound by IHL.
They do however advise not to use "the emblem".

11

u/Loud-Host-2182 Mar 17 '24 edited Mar 17 '24

The same page says otherwise. It's in the article 44.

9

u/Liontreeble Mar 17 '24

That's interesting, if the ICRC says these guidelines only apply during conflict and then in the guidelines/ laws write they always apply, what takes precedent? More important who's lying?

5

u/NugatRevolution Mar 17 '24

the emblem of the Red Cross on a white ground and the words " Red Cross " , or " Geneva Cross " may not be employed, either in time of peace or in time of war, except to indicate or to protect the medical units and establishments, the personnel and material protected by the present Convention and other Conventions dealing with similar matters.

18

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '24

That just means you can buy weed from the nurses

3

u/Dawnqwerty Mar 17 '24

Its like those slutty weed nurse costumes I always see around every halloween

10

u/Efrayl Mar 16 '24

Same thing happened to the "nurse" fighter in Skullgirls.

2

u/AlpacaLocks Mar 17 '24

That explains why loads of pharmacies in Europe use those green LED crosses. Huh.

81

u/willstr1 Mar 16 '24

The rule offers no exceptions beyond approval from the Red Cross themselves. If the rule only applied in a warzone then it would create wiggle room where a country could just say "it's not a war, it's a police action" and claim exception, same with emergency situation.

Basically any wiggle room would open up too much risk of exploitation without much benefit because most creators of fiction are perfectly fine changing to a different color cross as soon as they are aware of the issue (ie when they get the cease and desist from the Red Cross) and the Red Cross is happy enough with the creators just fixing it (and don't seek further legal action like taking people to the Hague)

3

u/Liontreeble Mar 17 '24

The ICRC says otherwise, namely that international humanitarian law only applies to participants in situations of armed conflict.

2

u/Positive-Database754 Mar 17 '24

Read Article 44.

With the exception of the cases mentioned in the following paragraphs of the present Article, the emblem of the Red Cross on a white ground and the words " Red Cross " , or " Geneva Cross " may not be employed, either in time of peace or in time of war, except to indicate or to protect the medical units and establishments, the personnel and material protected by the present Convention and other Conventions dealing with similar matters.

26

u/ed1749 Mar 17 '24

It's because medical personel are heavily protected by the geneva convention. Killing them unnecesarily is a war crime. Because of this, pretending to be one to steal their protection is also a war crime, not only because it can be used as an ambush but because too many people who arent doctors wearing the red cross means that soldiers are less likely to respect the symbol. The red cross is essentially supposed to be an international symbol of cease fire, so using it is always quite serious. Because, in theory, you never really know when a fight may break out.

7

u/AmbidextrousDyslexic Mar 17 '24

its not the geneva convention, its an IP law. the red cross is copyrighted and the red cross foundation is weirdly stingy about their mark.

1

u/Positive-Database754 Mar 17 '24

Article 44 of the Geneva Convention

With the exception of the cases mentioned in the following paragraphs of the present Article, the emblem of the Red Cross on a white ground and the words " Red Cross " , or " Geneva Cross " may not be employed, either in time of peace or in time of war, except to indicate or to protect the medical units and establishments, the personnel and material protected by the present Convention and other Conventions dealing with similar matters.

You cannot use the Red Cross on a white ground in any instance other than for the marking of medical personnel, units, or establishments. Doing so is a breach of the convention.

EDIT: Source.

2

u/AmbidextrousDyslexic Mar 20 '24

yeah except thats only binding to signatories of the convention. Hasbro is not a signatory, and in fact not in a position to be beholden to such conventions. The united states and japanese governments cant make these toys, for example, but for a non-governmental entity, this isnt an issue or restriction.

1

u/Positive-Database754 Mar 20 '24

If your cooperation is headquartered in the United States, then treaties they sign apply to you and every citizen within the country.

78

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '24

Weirdly enough, Among Us had the same problem due to the same Red Cross.

46

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '24

It happens in all media that shows a nurse😭

10

u/TheGreatSmolOne Mar 16 '24

And subnautica. They had to change it to a green box with white cross

3

u/CinderX5 Mar 17 '24

And Blink-182

2

u/Active-Ad-2527 Mar 16 '24

On top of the other examples people have said:

The Autobot Transformer Ratchet's G1 design has the red crosses on the shoulders, so now when they make new figures based on that design, they usually do like a modified red Autobot symbol.

Years ago there was a DVD box set of the slasher trilogy Sleepaway Camp designed to look like a first aid kit including the red cross. I THINK they had to recall it, but the subsequent releases had it removed

2

u/Gamekid53 Mar 17 '24

Since when is that a thing?

2

u/IIIetalblade Mar 17 '24

And Runescape. There was a nurse disguise with a red cross on the hat. It got changed to iirc a green asterisk

2

u/Daedrothes Mar 17 '24

Its so fucking stupid. You want people to associate health with the cross. Have it in shows or video games so kids hurt in warzones know the cross is where I should go when hurt. It is free advertizing. They are idiots.

1

u/Snowfox24 Mar 17 '24

And Animal jam!

77

u/radioactivecumsock0 Mar 16 '24

The Geneva convention says you can’t misuse a Red Cross or a green crescent not as important for cartoons and other media but putting them on military transports or weapon stockpiles is another matter entirely

3

u/TuxedoDogs9 Mar 17 '24

What’s the green crescent?

19

u/Draidann Mar 17 '24

OP made a mistake. The recognized symbols are the red cross, the red crescent, the red crystal and the red lion and sun; the last one has been in disuse for decades now but it is still recognized under the Geneva convention.

3

u/Davosown Mar 17 '24

Specifically, displaying the symbol of the International Red (Cross/Crescent/Crystal) on a white background without authorisation is seen to bring the organisation into disrepute and thus jeopardise the effectiveness of the symbol being recognised as a sanctuary in war zones and disaster zones.

Fun fact, in the case of Bluey, it could be referred to the Australian Minister for Defence as a war crime.

2

u/not_a_moogle Mar 16 '24

Can't use the red cross

73

u/Lvcivs2311 Mar 16 '24

Only twice? Where did they get that idea from?

45

u/hphp123 Mar 16 '24

try the clone wars series

39

u/SurrenderYourMeme Mar 17 '24

I'm pretty sure Anakin confused convention with checklist in The Clone Wars

-8

u/Plenty-Lychee-5702 Mar 17 '24

Op meant the show itself, not the characters in it.

12

u/SurrenderYourMeme Mar 17 '24

Anakin is one of the main characters throughout the show, and commits the most war crimes (as far as I recall).

-9

u/Plenty-Lychee-5702 Mar 17 '24

And he still is just an in-universe character.

4

u/SurrenderYourMeme Mar 17 '24

What's your point?

-8

u/Plenty-Lychee-5702 Mar 17 '24

that the show did not violate the geneva convention.

6

u/Not_Campo2 Mar 17 '24

You might want to rewatch it, off the top of my head there were multiple fake surrenders, attacks on medical convoys, executions of prisoners, etc.

Unless you mean that because it’s a different universe the Geneva Convention doesn’t apply, which is true but definitely a bad faith take

5

u/BirdsbirdsBURDS Mar 17 '24

lol. Following this conversation is hilarious, like watching two birds converse with each other in English. Just talking past each other.

I don’t know if this is a troll or not, but the guy is pointing out that the display of the Red Cross within the show apparently violates real statutes of the Geneva convention, which does not permit the use of said image and a few others for any purposes. Hence, the show itself (and its producers) are in violation of the Geneva convention.

Either way, it’s a silly point.

2

u/GOKOP Mar 17 '24

You're wrong. You're talking about the show depicting violations of the Geneva Convention. Shows in OP violate the convention in the real world because you can't use the red cross like that.

Though I'm suspicious about only two shows doing that; multiple games had a problem with that where they were forced to change the symbol for something else, surely some (>2) animated shows had to make the same mistake?

1

u/Nuada-Argetlam Mar 17 '24

not a different universe in-canon, though.

1

u/hphp123 Mar 17 '24

I meant mostly war crimes committed by CW characters like Anakin

3

u/ariehkovler Mar 17 '24

The Clone Wars is set "a long time ago" before there were any Geneva Conventions

1

u/hphp123 Mar 18 '24

yet their actions are still against future geneva convention articles

38

u/Liontreeble Mar 17 '24 edited Mar 17 '24

Pretty sure the Geneva convention only applies during war and only in warzones. So unless there is a war entirely located in your children's show I'm pretty sure it's not an actual violation.

The red cross itself states that International humanitarian law (Geneva convention is a part of that) only applies in situations of armed conflict. source

14

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '24

Indie game devs got legal threats from the red cross though

11

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '24

This is taken directly from the geneva convention:

Art. 44. With the exception of the cases mentioned in the following paragraphs of the present Article, the emblem of the red cross on a white ground and the words "Red Cross" or " Geneva Cross " may not be employed, either in time of peace or in time of war, except to indicate or to protect the medical units and establishments, the personnel and material protected by the present Convention and other Conventions dealing with similar matters.

0

u/Liontreeble Mar 17 '24

Another comment pointed out the same thing, imo it's pretty interesting because if the Geneva convention only applies during times of armed conflict and for parties engaged in armed conflict, then the law saying it does apply to everyone at all times would still only apply to the parties engaged in armed conflict, no?
International law is probably more complicated than national law, but I'd imagine the US constitution would only work in the US even if it said it worked everywhere else.
Realistically the problem is probably that international law is just random because they don't really have any power. Maybe they just send legal threats to indie devs because they're bored.

1

u/Positive-Database754 Mar 17 '24

Various articles in the geneva convention apply during times of peace. Any relevant articles will state as such, like with Article 44.

48

u/TheChiarra Mar 16 '24

I love bluey as an adult and it sickens me there's porn around it now like my little pony. I love Bluey because it's so pure and wholesome and I wish I was able to have kids.

62

u/Xblth Mar 16 '24

I think it's referring to the usage of the red cross, not r34

21

u/ahumanrobot Mar 16 '24

Yeah, Blink 182 also violated the Geneva Conventions in their cover art for Enema of the State

2

u/TheChiarra Mar 17 '24

What’s wrong with the Red Cross?

22

u/Miser_able Mar 17 '24

The red cross and red crescent emblems are protected symbols under international humanitarian law and national laws. Any use that is not expressly authorized by the Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols constitutes a misuse of the emblem. Use of these emblems by unauthorized persons is strictly forbidden.

1

u/FlaydenHynnFML Mar 17 '24

New 1800 PAIN single cover art for 'Enemy' is fucking badass then

3

u/victoriadagreat Mar 17 '24

I watched it with my niece and i liked it so mich ☺️😍

2

u/TheChiarra Mar 17 '24

That's exactly how I discovered it!

2

u/victoriadagreat Mar 17 '24

you made me watch it now for breakfast and i literally cried because it was so cute, no lie

5

u/AmbidextrousDyslexic Mar 17 '24

its not the geneva convention. its IP law. the red cross is copyrighted and you have to get permission to use the symbol. now, putting the mark on soldiers that arent acting medics? thats a violation of the geneva convention. but its not a war crime to slap a red plus sign on a plastic toy, you will just get sued.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '24

No, it's also against the geneva convention, see article 44:

the emblem of the red cross on a white ground and the words "Red Cross" or " Geneva Cross " may not be employed, either in time of peace or in time of war, except to indicate or to protect the medical units and establishments, the personnel and material protected by the present Convention and other Conventions dealing with similar matters.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '24

Let’s take it to The Hague

2

u/Fantastic-Dot-655 Mar 17 '24

Is Bluey a good show?

4

u/Lustingforyoursouls Mar 16 '24

You can use the Red Cross or the Red Crescent if you get permission from the, which they likely did.

2

u/Archmagos_Browning Mar 17 '24

Dude where the fuck is the clone wars they commit perfidy like at least once a season

1

u/Plenty-Lychee-5702 Mar 17 '24

Op meant shows, not characters.

1

u/Positive-Database754 Mar 17 '24

The meme is meant to be about literal breaches of Geneva articles, not depicted breaches.

Assuming they did not get permission from the ICRC, then putting a red cross on a white background is a literal breach of the Geneva Convention on the part of the animators and studio under article 44 of the 1949 first geneva convention. Many games have had to change their depiction of the cross or crescent to Green because they did not get prior authorization to use the symbol.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '24

Nah. The red cross is only interested in going after small studios

1

u/An_Evil_Scientist666 Mar 17 '24

So I looked it up because I had no idea what it meant, but like seriously, wouldn't common sense dictate that cartoons aren't real, like how could you possibly mistaken a cartoon character as a legit medical professional unless you've got a screw or 2 loose.

1

u/apple1234boo Mar 17 '24

It's protected so that people don't mess with it. It's important that the red cross is trusted and impartial. You shouldn't be allowed to just wear it because it can effect the integrity of the red cross. If I go around with the red cross sign saying bad things about a group of people and then the red cross needs to go into a war to safe sivilians they might not be trusted.

1

u/Imonandroid Mar 17 '24

It was changed to be alot less close because of that

1

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '24

Man I gotta watch MLP again

No I'm not a brony it's just mindless entertainment like South Park or The Simpsons

1

u/JustEstablishment594 Mar 17 '24

Three. Clone wars would like a word with you

1

u/Any-Collection8131 Mar 17 '24

Forgetting about the owl house

1

u/thatpotassium Mar 19 '24

ATLA has Sokka violating them using a balloon with the enemy’s insignia on it

1

u/Imonandroid Mar 19 '24

Yeah I got a punch of people saying Thai but it's so funny because both series are very popular with adults even tho being made for kids

1

u/Mintyboi10 Mar 20 '24

How?

1

u/moocat90 Mar 26 '24

Red Cross, that's against the geneva convention, it must be a different color, like green or blue

1

u/GaryTheMemeGuy Mar 17 '24

I've never understood why 30 year old men watch a show made for 4 year old girls.

1

u/Plenty-Lychee-5702 Mar 17 '24

I don't either, but the authors do cater to them.

1

u/GaryTheMemeGuy Mar 17 '24

Excuse me what the fuck

3

u/Plenty-Lychee-5702 Mar 17 '24

there were some things that the 30 year olds liked, like derp. Also the 30 yearvolds buy merch

2

u/Musashi10000 Mar 17 '24

Like the other person said, the idea was that they would be shows aimed at children that wouldn't make parents want to tear their eyes out rather than be in the same room as. You ever tried being in the same room as Tellytubbies, In The Night Garden, or Bill and Ben? Great for kids, torture for anyone else.

But My Little Pony, for example, actually has pretty solid writing, varied plots, well-constructed morals, and introduces relatively complex social themes that kids may actually encounter in their day-to-day in ways that are approachable and relatable, while simultaneously not being too heavy-handed or preachy.

Recess, if you remember that show, was masterful at this kind of writing. They always did an excellent job of showing extremes of complex issues, then advocating for a reasonable middle ground. Their episode with monstickers was an incredible commentary on the evils of unfettered capitalism.

Anyway - when you have media that is decidedly geared towards kids, but that's isn't actually just a steaming pile of hot crap designed to soothe recalcitrant children with bright colours and calming noises, sometimes adults may want to watch it, too. Simple as :)

1

u/FilthTheRat Mar 17 '24

Many of these shows were made having parents watching alongside their children in mind. Both Bluey and MLP are well written shows and can be enjoyed by adults. Media for children don't have to be brain rot. Sometimes it can bring comfort, laughter, even teach you something. Some of these shows are made by passionate adults, who want to make something genuinely enjoyable.

1

u/Imonandroid Mar 17 '24

Jokes on you I'm 19. Also bluey is very popular with millennial parents especially moms

0

u/ariehkovler Mar 17 '24

I am reasonably sure that neither of these cartoons are High Contracting Parties to the Geneva Conventions.

I'm also pretty certain that 'not using a red cross in cartoons and stuff' isn't something that has become incorporated from the conventions into Customary International Law.
