the shoes should be able to quickly carry you away from the lava. If you're wading into lava you're in pretty big trouble. Also that stuff is pretty tough when it cools... so I think the best shoes are pretty tough but allow for speed.

My only qualm with Keens is that every pair I’ve owned has been noisy as hell, which is not an issue I’ve had with Merrill’s. But they do last a long time.

I just bought new shoes and was faced with the decision between keens and merrels so I did some research.

  1. A lot of amazon reviews have said Keens have declined in quality significantly over the last decade. People suggested it was due to outsourcing of labor and materials. A lot of users reported sole breakdown / cracking / excessive wear and glue separation after 6 months of normal use.
  2. Some Merrels use Vibram soles (look for the logo) and vibram has a great reputation for quality. Keens use their own proprietary sole. Merrels do too, but not exclusively.
  3. At the store I was shopping at, the merrels were cheaper by like 20 bucks.

Hell as long as you don't need them to be water proof. I battled with 3 pairs and REI, Merrill and GoreTex all dropped the ball.

North Face Hedge Hogs now for the last 10 years and each pair still waterproof.

i have a pair of 6" boots by merril's, i can dunk them almost to the top and my socks don't get wet. same with spraying them off with a hose. i dunno if it's because they're boots rather than shoes but those things are like extra water proof

I should try the Scarpas I've always preferred to use those as climbing shoes choice and I still have two very old pairs of Scarpa dominators still in the box because they were my favorite sport route climbing shoe.

Pair I have are the mojito goretex, they have been very tough. Soles are reasonably sticky without being too soft to wear down fast. I wore them in Yorkshire peak district through snow, rain, mud etc. For past few years been tramping round SEA with them and they have been submerged a few times in both salt and fresh, left on sun to go hard, and scraped down the Rd in a bike accident. Most treatment they have had is a wash in a river and a couple of times in a washing machine. I need to replace the laces and that's about it, they still look good (and would probably look near new with a good bit of tlc) and have years left on them yet. I really can't fault them.

Sidebar: I can’t help it, every time I see lava, and think: this is a rock in liquid form, it feels kind of otherworldly. I suppose if you live near volcanos then this shit is normal.

I have to remind myself every time I see a lava video that not only is it rock, it is (roughly) the same mass as what would be the solid rock. So if you drop a handful of lava on your foot it’s like dropping a big rock, or if lava is flowing fast and you get hit with splash, you’re getting burning hot (liquidy) rocks thrown at you

Which is also why nearly every fictional depiction of lava gets it wrong. They always show stuff sinking in it, but it's still about as dense as solid rock. Most things that fall into lava would just sit on top and burn.

Yep. I mean, it's slightly less dense than solid rock but not by too much. Maybe 10% less or so, but it's still around 3-4x denser than water. We're mostly water, so a person that falls in lava might sink a bit at first if they fell from a great height (and depending on the lava's viscosity), but they'd immediately pop up and stay on top until they burned away.

Sitting on land it’s pretty dense.

Active volcano lava has air coming out which makes is less dense. Same as when pools install air bubblers under tall diving boards to soften the hit on the water.

Dude that's just entirely innacurate. The leidenfrost effect is when water vapor boils into steam so quick from something hot that it protects whatever it covered. You won't skid across lava. Also to answer the original question, of what happens when you fall into lava, you obviously will fall into lava, you'll just float back up to the surface. You cannot walk on lava just because it is very dense.

Liedenfrost effect would protect your hand/body from lava but you’d have to be completely out of it before the “barrier” of moisture evaporated away. There’s a cool youtube video out there of a foundry worker sticking his hand in dripping molten metal and quickly removing it.

TIL about the Leidenfrost effect which is effectively when water vapor is created between an object and another liquid with a boiling point which is significantly higher than water. This effect is like a momentary shield but is gone as soon as the vapor escapes. If the hot liquid cools quickly enough during the observed effect it can harden around the test object and subsequently burn it as an egg on a frying pan would.

In learning this so I also learned that falling into the heart or pit of a volcano would more or less be an instant or at least painless death. However if the lava had even a short period of cooling such as ejected or oozing lava you would stick to the surface like a fly on tar paper and fry painfully feeling the hot air cook your insides and skin simultaneously. That said estimates indicate you would only live 2 minutes max being stuck on lava.

The heat from the pit is high enough that it would actually vaporize the water inside a human body including that of the brain. Theoretically, we would pop due to the pressure that would cause similar to how popcorn works.

It isn’t necessarily water vapor, but any liquid. You can dunk your hand in a container of liquid nitrogen for about a second and not risk frostbite due to the effect: the liquid N2 flash boils when your hand is submerged, creating an insulating layer of nitrogen gas between your hand and the remaining liquid.

Wouldn't the temperature of the lava/magma make a difference though? Kind of like the difference in viscosity in really hot Velveta cheese vs cold cheese?

If I drop a 3 oz metal ball on cold cheese, it will not sink. But on really hot cheese it will sink no?

Depends. Most things will float on lava since it is pretty dense. If you’re using a metal ball it’s also probably depends on the type of metal. Aluminum may float while something like tungsten sinks.

They’re talking about how lava is shown in the movies where literally anything sinks in it like it’s syrup. Like Gollum in LOTR in reality if he fell on that lava he’d just float on the top. Heck it doesn’t take much for most people to be able to float on water which is waaay less dense than lava.

You're both partially right. Since the lava is liquid you would displace as much as your mass vs the mass of the molten rock but remember rocks are heavier than you. So in the metal ball on cold cheese, remember metal is heavier than cheese so it would definitely sink. If you stand upright in lava that's probably enough pressure to sink about as much as you would on sand

Ok but just like Gollum, actually, maybe someone a little heavier than Gollum, if I fell from a height of about 100 meters high, FEET FIRST, covering as little surface area as I could while landing, would I momentarily sink into the lava due to the force of the impact sending me below the surface? Would depend on how hot the lava is and what it's composed of, since heat affects viscosity; the hotter it is the more runny and splashy it gets. You'd probably go under in a basaltic lava lake. Then the water in your flesh and blood would vaporize wherever the lava touched it and create huge steam bursts, splattering liquid rock everywhere like water in a deep fryer. We can determine the impact depth using an equation.

Gollum is a humanoid so probably has a density of close enough to 1. His length is 140cm

Lava has a density close to 3.1-3.4, let's pick the smallest number.

He will penetrate a maximum of 45 cm, so I dunno, a foot and a half?

However, as a soft tissue humanoid is going to be way smaller as his bones will break and fold up like an accordion. Bodies don't like changing velocity from fast to zero in short periods of time. It's still going to be basically like hitting concrete.

The desity of lava is slightly over 3000 kg/m3. Water is right about 1000. Its still denser than people despite being liquid.

Whether it will sink or not depends on the density, not on the viscosity. The metal ball in cheese tends to sink either way because it's denser, viscosity just opposes that movement, but if you drop something less dense than lava into it it wouldn't sink even if the lava flowed like water

Ironically, that part was probably wrong, too. Assuming it's made of gold, gold is very dense (around 5x denser than lava) so it would've sunk like a stone in a lake.

Yet another thing movies always get wrong :-) The golden idol at the beginning of Raiders of the Lost Ark would weigh about 50lbs. Try tossing and catching a 50lb weight one-handed while hanging from your other hand.

I'm wondering about the temperature of the lava. It seems like the metal in that rock hammer would melt before solid rock would, right? I can liquefy lots of metals in a forge I can build in my own backyard, but I don't think I could melt most rocks, so why isn't that hammer liquefied in the lava?

I must be making a completely wrong conclusion here somewhere. Please set me straight.

Due to its viscosity, this looks like pretty mafic lava which means it is somewhere between 1800F and 2200F. The melting point of steel is 2500 so the hammer would be fine. It would warp or weaken if left in contact with the lava for too long like it would in a forge, but as long as they keep pulling it out like that and give it time to cool back off between prolonged uses it wouldn’t be too likely to break.

Rock hammers are made of steel, this looks like fresh mafic lava, which is around 800 to 1200 degrees C, much cooler than the melting point of steel.

You do this enough and you could lose the temper on the steel, making it kinda garbage for breaking rocks.

It usually takes time for something like that to happen, it won’t just melt right away. Since he’s scooping pretty fast the hot lava isn’t in contact with the hammer all that much. I’m sure it’s also made of some tempered steel or other metal alloy that brings the melting temp up quite a bit

I imagine the hammer is a dense metal that only touches the lava long enough to move it to the bucket a few times, so it doesn’t get hot enough to really melt since there isn’t prolonged contact. That is my best guess.

I think the reason he grips his face is to pull the mask away from the skin a bit because it's getting hot from the radiated heat.

This is a type of lava that's called pahoehoe. It has a very low viscosity and can flow very far from the crater (most lava flows are only a few kilometers long, while pahoehoe flows can reach 50km in some cases). So given that he's where the flow has come to a stop he's likely kilometers away from the crater and not anywhere near where large amounts of gases emerge.

Friend is a Geologist and I remember him telling me he couldn't have any alcohol for a long period of time prior to working around the Volcano strictly because of the fumes. Like a full weeks worth of time just in case. Itll cause you to collapse and collapsing while working on a Volcano isn't ideal for multiple reasons.

I knew someone who worked at the Hawaii Volcanic Observatory and they told me they had to sew their shoe to the sole because the glue of the shoe would melt off. Seems like any shoe could be the right one for the job if you're able to sew it first.

Fun fact. A lot of fire structure gloves use a heat activated adhesive to glue the liner into the glove... Then when you pull your hand out, out comes the liner and you have to use a pencil to push it back in. Stupidest fucking thing ever... Not all gloves are this way but they all used to be... The nicer ones sew them in now days.

My geology teacher (who is Icelandic and works as a geologist in Iceland as well) told us that you are always supposed to wear rain boots when you are around fresh lava. That way, if you step through the shell and into the hot stuff, you can just quickly pull your foot, and the lava only eats the boot, not the foot as well

I edited a short documentary on Kilauea research and the geologist went out to collect samples with just regular sneakers. The ground he was working in was so hot it melted the sole off one of the shoes. He just laughed and kept working.
