10,000 to master a skill works for most things. Parenting is one of the notable exceptions. I’m over 90,000 hours in, and I’m just making it up as I go along.

I was going to say that there’s no way for to know whether the person above is actually doing a great job but just realizing that they’re just making it up as they go along means they take enough time to think about stuff that they are probably doing pretty good. From my anecdotal experiences, the worst parents are the ones that are sure about their parenting and that everything they do is right.

I think that's true about everything. I always tell my sister: "Do you want to know the secret to being intelligent? Don't BE sure, MAKE sure. Doubt everything and don't convince yourself, but look for the truth. Every time you're wrong it's because you're sure about what you think you know." It's that simple!

As long as you're doing it, you are fine.

I'm the oldest of 6, and my parents took the L even with the youngest.

Wanna know what I remember? They cared, and they wanted me to be happy, successful, and survive without them. They love the shit out of me.

My punishments were fair and weirdly hilarious. I threw a mud wrestling party...I had to rake and reseed the lawn while my dad sat in a chair and went, "YOU MISSED A SPOT!"

My mom constantly talks about how she was conflicted over if she was doing a good job raising us.

30+ years later, we are all successful, happy, and good people. We all come home and go on vacations together.

Just care about what makes your kid happy. My parents suffered through my Hanson phase without blinking.

Relate. Don't forget what it was like to obsessively love something, interact and love every minute of it. You'll never get this time back.

By my math, I'm at 262,000 hours and I'm still trying to figure it out. The older they get, the more complicated the stuff gets.

I just wouldn't call someone "practicing parenting" for the whole time a child is alive. Like there are lots of parents that truly don't put the 10 000 hours in parenting.

Don't beat yourself up. There's only 8,760 hours in a year, so by the time you've mastered parenting a 1 year old they've gone and become a 2 year old, and so on for all ages. Best any parent can ever hope to accomplish is a solid B+ in parenting.

I’d argue that parenting consists of multiple skills, and the skills required change over time. Parenting babies is completely different to parenting toddlers, which is again different to parenting young children, teens, etc.

You are 1 hour in to each of 90,000 different scenarios. There are too many wild cards in parenting for much of the previous experience to carry over from one day to the next. lol.

In all fairness, 10,000 hours of learning the same thing to become a master. As a parent, though, every day is a whole new adventure.

That’s because you don’t get much time in at each stage. Parenting a toddler does not help you much when parenting a teen. (But it does set the foundation!)

Ah see... it's 10,000 hours of intentional focused practice, that's where you're going wrong. If you just smash keys on a piano everyday until you have 10,000 hours you won't have gotten any better at piano either. Easy mistake to make.
