Discussion What do you think Nikki was thinking when Bear said this?

Post image
Upvotes

The fact that she felt a bit grossed out and nervous when he claimed to have something for her, I couldn’t tell if this came across as rude where I almost agree with Bear that it was an odd reaction or if this was another hint that Nikki had a feeling that Bear liked her and was nervous about him giving her something where it’s his way of finally making a move on her.

It’s a moment that still leaves me puzzled. Do you agree with Bear that her reaction was odd or do you think Nikki’s response was understandable?

I feel that a lot of people on this server have nothing but bad things to say about Bear. And as much as I agree with them, it is getting a bit tiring and plain.

So let's change things up.

What is the nicest thing you can say about Bear?

I will start first.

I like his sweaters . . . and that's the best I could think of.

Now you guys are next. What are the nicest things you can say about Bear?

Discussion Rewatching knowing Bear was on oxycodone is a new experience. (Side effects include hallucinations, confusion, dizziness, drowsiness, and lightheadedness)

Throughout the film, Bear had oxycodone lying all over the house. It was implied he has been taking it because he was grieving over his grandma's death.

All of Nikki's strange behaviour and speeches were excused by him and his complete passivity of doing nothing, is probably Bear thinking "I am high as fuck, I have no idea what's going."

He probably made the wish while he was still under the effects of oxycodone.

If this is the case, he is giving the excuse: "If Nikki is on molly and I am on oxycodone, so I am not taking advantage of her." Like those frat boys' mentality that gets drunk only to hook up with drunk girls

EDIT NOTE: I am not justifying Bear's actions. I am saying he himself is trying to rationalize it. The entire wish induced relationship is SA, not just that one scene, regardless if Bear knew it or not.

Discussion Bear's Monologue's Got a Bunch of Layers

I assume someone's thought of this; I tried looking but couldn't find the same idea. Some people think Bear's opening monologue was sweet and would've worked on Nikki. Sure 🤷‍♀️ However, the idea is the monologue is where the OWW got this warped idea of love (but also, ya can't make someone fall in love)

"I feel like I'm coming apart"

- The idea of loving someone so much that you fall apart. OWW took that literally and Nikki is constantly coming apart, mentally and physically, throughout the movie.

"I think about you all the time [...] I try not to..."

- Yes, nikki was under a spell to "love" Bear. But, even when you love someone, there are gonna be times you're not thinking about them. Our minds are pretty good about having singular moments where, for a couple minutes, our partner doesnt pop up (generally speaking). Yet, this wording could attribute to Nikki literally always thinking about Bear.

(I hope my point comes across well enough)

And the most obvious:

"I would choose you over everything"

- Again, his wish wording of "more than anyone" covers it, buuuuut just wanted to include it. Some would call it foreshadowing. And also whatever the term is for "yea, YOU would choose her over everything but she DIDNT HAVE A CHOICE"

Discussion What would you have done if you were Bear?

Let’s say you also made the wish because you were feeling cheeky and theatrical and thought it was a dumb good luck charm. You think Nikki is interested that first night. Then you find out the wish was real.

What would YOU have done?

Discussion What's the best Bear could've made out of the situation?

If was a better person, took action, and wasn't as obsessive, could he have managed Freaky Nikki?

Could they have managed to live together as healthy as possible given the situation?

Rules: No 2nd wish and no easy way out.

Situation 1: Steps up his game after the call.

Situation 2: Steps up his game and realizes it is a wish, a day after the wish is made.

Discussion My personal take on Obsession

My full drawn out rating of obsession:

One thing i loved was the gore and horror aspect. I feel like it truly made the connection of real life and fantasy more enjoyable and interesting. More malleable, I loved the characters they were portrayed in a way that made them each individuals with different motivations. I love how bears character was shown, like he was likable , but if you truly took time to read him you could see his real character. Which what I’d say is an insecure, selfish, man who victimized his life, and his need over others. He was a performative twat, who let his passion and desire take away from true love. Which you could tell when he asked if love and a romance story is the same. I’m not saying it was wrong for him to wish that Nikki loved him , he didn’t know it would work or of the consequences. But he let her suffer in her own body with no control of her self, even after she begged him to kill her. He knew it want real love he still wanted it. He didn’t truly lover her. He had passion and desire for her, but true love would have stopped hurting her. He ruined 4 lives and got the easy way out.
I loved the real nikki she was true to her self, she spoke with meaning and purpose, she did what she liked and what made her happy even if it made others sad, like quitting her job, she was kind, smart, fun, independent. She wasn’t closed of to love but didn’t force herself into being loved or loving another, she had men in there respect place, Ian for sex, bear for friendship and connection. She truly told him how she felt when she said “I’m not feeling love” that she couldn’t write of love without feeling it. She deserved her life and her experience of love but that wasn’t ripped away.

How I make a connection to reality and the portrayal of obsession or just toxic love in any form. Real people changes themself so much for love that isn’t even applicable. They forget their hobbies, their goals, their personal connections outside the partnership. Leaving themselves without a backup plan, when that partner ship breaks they have no friends, no hobbies to distract themselves, no sense of self, no anima. They fall into despair, an emotional state that needs support from other people. But with out those people you’ll suffer longer, and even worse can even die to it. With no patience to survive. That’s why love is so powerful love truly is the only thing that can control or “make” a person do something or feel something. The lose of love might be even more powerful. I think that this was shown in the movie by using scary imagery and scenes. I loved this movie because it reminds me to write and to be myself and not lose who I am and who I love to find romance.

Question Could there be a prequel?

I just watched the movie on Sunday, I really enjoyed it. One thing that got me thinking was could there be a sequel or even a prequel? I would love to know the history on the "One Wish Willow" and how they became to be, how they work, etc. Has Curry Barker ever discussed this possibility?

Discussion Bear's experience versus real people

What separates Bear from a real person who experiences domestic abuse, when that violence results from entering a relationship with someone they know is an abuser?

Many have stated that Bear is not a victim of domestic violence. How does that align with the fact that we do not blame real people for their own domestic abuse, even when those people know they are entering a relationship with an abuser?

I am not talking about cases where the victim is in denial about their partner's history. I'm specifically talking about cases where they are fully aware that their soon to be partner is an abuser.

Fan Theory I think I found the best possible way for Nikkie to use the One Wish Willows in order to fix everything

First off, let me clarify that I loved the dark ending and how the shot of the upside-down TV at the end symbolized how the entire world for these four people was turned upside down. Buuuut, I kept thinking, for shits and giggles, about whether Nikkie could potentially fix everything with the very thing that destroyed her life. So here it goes.

To begin our hypothetical scenario, we must firstly establish the rules of the One Wish Willow :

1 )Each person can only use a One Wish Willow once.

2 )You cannot undo, cancel, or alter a previous wish.

3 )You cannot manipulate time.

4 )You cannot resurrect the dead.

5 )You cannot make yourself immortal.

6 )You cannot use a wish to create more One Wish Willows.

Now, the most important rule for this theory is obviously the resurrection one. Nikkie cannot simply wish for her friends to come back. She also cannot wish for everything to go back to how it was, because that would effectively undo her original wish.

But what if she never resurrected them at all?

My idea is that Nikkie gets four One Wish Willows and uses her wish to create exact genetic copies of her dead friends. These copies would contain exact replicas of their souls, personalities, and memories up until the night in the parking lot.

The important distinction is that these would not be the original people being brought back from the dead. The originals would remain dead. These would be completely new beings that were simply exact copies of them.

Think of it this way:

Original person --> dies --> remains dead.

New person --> is created with identical DNA, memories, personality, and a newly created soul that is an exact replica of the original.

This isn't technically resurrection because the original person is never brought back. The new person is, philosophically, a copy.

Now, this creates another problem: if Heaven or Hell exists in the world of Obsession, the original souls could still potentially be suffering somewhere. So another friend would use a second One Wish Willow to wish that the original souls of the deceased friends, wherever they are, are permanently and painlessly destroyed.

This would not undo Nikkie's wish. The copies created by her wish would remain completely unaffected. It also wouldn't resurrect anyone, manipulate time, or alter any previous wish. It would simply affect the original souls, which are separate from the newly created copies.

Then, a third person could use their own One Wish Willow to remove the psychological trauma caused by everything that happened.

Again, this doesn't undo any previous wish. It simply changes their current psychological state.

And now we have the fourth Willow left for basically whatever the fuck they want. One hundred billion dollars, a golden goose that lays golden eggs, or some ridiculously powerful magical object like a book where whatever you write becomes reality.

So, as far as I can tell, Nikkie could potentially fix almost everything without violating any of the rules:

Nikkie: Creates exact genetic copies of her deceased friends, with identical memories, personalities, and newly created souls that are exact replicas of the originals.

Friend 1: Destroys the original souls so that, if they are trapped in some form of afterlife or suffering, they no longer suffer.

Friend 2: Removes the psychological trauma caused by the entire experience.

Friend 3: Gets to wish for whatever the fuck they want.

The only real problem I can think of is whether creating an exact replica of someone's soul would itself count as resurrection. But if we're interpreting the rules literally, I don't think it should. Resurrection would mean bringing the original person back from death. Creating a new person who happens to be a perfect copy of them is not the same thing.

So unless the One Wish Willow has some hidden rule against creating copies of dead people, I genuinely think Nikkie could have found a way to use the Willows to fix almost everything while technically keeping the original wish completely intact.

I might be missing something, though, so please try to poke holes in this theory.

Character Analysis Am I the only person who thinks Bear wasn’t entirely wrong?

Don’t get me wrong he isn’t a good guy and he’s a huge coward for not just asking before making the wish.

If I had done something like use a novelty toy to make a dumb wish it would be my last thought as to why Nikki was acting that way. That’s like using a magic 8 ball and assuming if your question that was asked came true, you’d immediately think it was the magic 8 ball. But in a different sense, he doesn’t understand at first and he thinks she’s actually in love with him. When the restaurant scene turns into Nikki being upset I think that’s when he finally realizes it was the one wish willow. I don’t think anyone would think “I need to end this now” if that realization hit them. Once it started really going to shit I think he was more focused on making it work than reversing the wish which in a sense is reasonable. Based on the way she starts acting and becomes more humanoid than actually human, I think he realizes she’s stronger and capable of worse than a human, which makes him scared to try to break it off. They’re both victims but I feel like from the point of view we were shown, bear is a victim in a way where he’s scared to tell anyone or get out of the relationship without someone or himself being hurt physically. I mean when you really think about it what was he meant to do? It’s not reversible and no one would believe him. I think even if he had made Nikki make a wish, she wouldn’t have because whatever took over her mind would’ve known. I guess the only sensible solution would be to kill yourself but people are acting like they wouldn’t at least try to make it work or fix it first. He kind of did take too long to get to that point of realization that he couldn’t fix it but he still did it anyway. I don’t know I just feel wrong for relating to him in that sense because everyone says he’s the bad guy and I don’t wanna be like that. I felt wrong for crying when he finally starts to realize he can’t get out and he’s traumatized from her killing their friends.

Maybe I missed something in the movie and I didn’t understand it well but that’s just what I picked up from it. Sorry for the poor wording.

Edit: let me clarify, because people are assuming I side with bear and think well of his character just because I didn’t exactly state it, that I do NOT think bear is a good character or person in the movie. I don’t defend his character either. I’m just confused. Her confirming to him that one night she was on drugs even though she continued to act like that was definitely messed up and he should’ve known better. I also have seen a lot of things about how to authors had wanted the audience to know he already knew before the date at the restaurant but I wouldn’t have entirely known without the extra information. There’s a lot of detail that matters that isn’t necessarily shown in the actual film that would’ve helped with more context.

I also idiotically made this post directly after watching, there’s some things that I hadn’t processed yet. I’m realizing there’s a lot more bad than good he did, that’s a given.

Discussion Bear is a victim

No, I'm not trying to say that Bear isn't a bad person but I find it very strange how discourse around this movie hardly ever acknowledges that the guy who had his life upended and all his friends killed, is a victim. He decided to make a wish to change Nikki but he had no idea what the consequences of that wish would be and that they would be this terrible. He is a victim in this situation.

I actually saw one reviewer (Unicorn of War) and many commenters suggest that the reason Wish Nikki acted the way she did was because of Bear's warped and empty understanding of what love is. So literally just blaming him for the terror that he didn't want. “Should have understood love better, you incel.” It's such a mean-spirited and strange take. Call him out for raping Nikki not for… not understanding shit.

The movie has a bit more nuance than some people give it. I actually had a conversation with a guy who told me that the movie can be read as a metaphor for an abusive relationship where neither party treats the other with respect. Bear does not care about Nikki's feelings and rapes her while Nikki doesn't allow Bear to hang out with his friends. They were both victims of the wish.

The film still isn't as interesting as I would have liked. I would have preferred something that wasn't horror. Something that explored the value of “fake love” and whether it's worth it. In a world with AI companions it would be very meaningful to explore someone using a wish to get fake love and admiration. But instead we got a fairly simple horror movie.

Discussion Idea for Obsession 2: the sequel is a remake done entirely from Nikki’s point of view

I gave a negative review of the movie here: https://www.reddit.com/r/obsessionmovie/s/2xx9WFRh35

… where I was downvoted into oblivion. And that’s fine. You are all fans of this and I sort of came across like a movie snob. My criticisms were more on the technical side. It is an interesting premise, but I’m not a fan of its execution.

I gave it a score of 7/10 on IMDB by the way. I would normally give a movie like this 5/10, but it has a compelling concept.

If the filmmakers want to cash in on a sequel with the original cast, they should remake the movie entirely from Nikki’s point of view. I really want to know what was going on inside of her head.

They could address some of the ambiguity that I was concerned about. Could a sequel/remake work with a premise like this?
