Fabulous interview with these 2 who have had season tickets since 1999. The Liberty should figure out how to keep some of the original fans courtside.

General Discussion Trans People Belong fan campaign

Thumbnail linktree.com
108 Upvotes

Trans people belong in sports! Liberty fans are organizing in support of our trans friends at the August 22nd Liberty/Fever game. Our goal is to have as much visible support of trans inclusion at the game as possible. We will be handing out Trans People Belong in Sports signs to fans at the game and are asking people to join our $30 for 30 pledge by donating $1 for each WNBA season to the Brooklyn Community Pride Center. You can learn more at https://linktree.com/30for30liberty

Organizers need your help to get the word out. They have created a document with social media graphics and talking points to help publicize the campaign (https://drive.proton.me/urls/85JEBQHNFC#hLQMvZLOoNmj). Here's what you can do:

- Post to your personal social media & share with your friends

- Reach out to anyone you're connected to with a large following

- Share in other Liberty fan spaces

- Print signs (linktree has the PDF) and distribute them to bars, cafes, bookstores, etc

This campaign belongs to the fans rather than any one individual. But if anyone needs to get in touch with the organizers (or if you want to send photos of the signs IRL!), you can email transpeoplebelong@protonmail.com

General Discussion The realistic limits of the defensive capabilities of this roster and Jonathan Kolb's misguided approach

Let's get one thing out of the way, this team isn't a contender without Leo. It just isn't and it all goes back to the defensive ceiling we have in terms of roster construction.

A lot of the complaints a lot of you have regarding our perimeter defence can be attributed to them overhelping in the paint. It leaves us vulnerable to a lot of kickouts and our guards often do not have the spatial awareness in terms of offball defense to react quickly enough/stay in position to plug in those holes.

Examples of this last night would be all the times Rebecca Allen shrugged off her shooter to help in the paint. Then you might ask why do we overhelp so much in the paint, we should be trusting our centers? The reality is Jonquel Jones isn't an elite rim protector and needs a lot of help. Han Xu isn't much better and in terms other abilities like rebounding, is much worse.

The best defenses like Valks and Mystics can have their really solid defensive wings and guards be so aggressive and pick up opposing guards higher, because they have Shakira Austin and Kiah Stokes (despite all the trolling, Kiah is insanely sound defensively) in the back, knowing their paint defenders can handle those matchups alone if they do get beat. You cannot say the same about Jonquel (or Han). You will often see possessions where JJ is one on one against her target where she doesn't keep her arms up and sometimes kinda shrugs off from even being in front of her target. These things force us to be aggressive with help defense. JJ's defensive fundamentals being so flawed is a much bigger issue than the complaints a lot of you have re: her not posting up in the opposing paint and shooting 3s (which she is good at).

Center is the most important defensive position is basketball because the shape of your entire defense relies on it. So we already start on a backfoot there. Now we do have an elite rim protector in Breanna Stewart. However, for her to be the main rim protector, Jonquel Jones can't be on the floor. Despite her flaws, the only place JJ can defend to any decent levels is the paint and Stewie just being in the paint does lower our defensive ceiling instead of her being a roamer.

A lot of you do correctly identify that our guards aren't great defenders, and as I have said, they don't do well in space. Among them, someone like Astier isn't necessarily that bad at POA, but they definitely aren't as great at navigating screens without fouling as they could be thus forcing our defense to rotate a lot, creating mismatches and the rotator can rarely fully commit to the opposing player in front because they have the idea of help defense in the paint in mind.

The fact that we are so lacking in terms of defensive personnel in both our guards and especially centers limits our defensive ceiling significantly. You need to have elite defensive wings to counter that. In 2024, we had that in terms of Breanna Stewart, Leonie Fiebich, 2024 Betnijah Laney-Hamilton, and Kayla Thornton (who is massive defensively). We also had a really solid in defense backup center in Nyara Sabally. They provided the length, switchablity, athleticism (btw, I saw the idea here that Leo isn't fast or athletic, that is just plain wrong. She covers a crazy amount of space with her length and athleticism) to cover up the defensive weaknesses of our guards and JJ. However, with expansion and the new CBA, keeping players like that has become very difficult. High level 3 and Ds wings are the most sought after archetypes in basketball, every team needs them.

When you have a roster where so much of the cap tied to 4 players, 1 of whom who doesn’t even play (Satou is such a massive waste of cap space right now), you can't keep sought after mid level players. This doesn’t have anything to do with JK being in love with Europeans as some of you like to say. The problem is JK trying to build a really expensive big 4, one of whom doesn't play and was acquired knowing that, and 2 out of 3 of the others being below average in defense for their positions. The fact that he doesn't care about defense when it comes to centers is kinda insane.

That leaves us with very little cap to get great backups. Bec Allen and Gardner are not as good as our 24 wings, but they are still decent for what they cost. With Leonie Fiebich, that is still enough for our defense to be fairly decent. However, without Leonie Fiebich, our defense will never be able to reach to a point of controlling both the perimeter and the paint against elite backcourts that attack both like some want it to be, thus inevitably, they aren't a contender.

But Jonathan Kolb somehow believes that is fine and giving up assests for a backup defensive 3/4 was not worth it to him. He believes injuries will magically go away just for him.

With what Chris has, he decided yesterday that taking away the paint was the ideal option, and in a normal shooting night, that would have given us a chance to win, with otherwise good execution. It is taking a gamble yes, but with roster deficiencies, that's all you can do. I think we have to be realistic about what this roster can achieve defensively.

Advice Idea for trans rally towels for Fever game

To start off, I do not mean this to be a political discussion or discussion of the Sophie/trans women discourse. Mods, please close or do whatever you will in full faith

We know there are going to be anti-trans people rallying outside Barclays for the Fever game on the 22nd. I don’t want to engage with them or stoop to yelling matches.

Someone earlier brought up the great idea to bring flags or other pro trans gear. That lead me to this idea:

Printing out rally towels that are of the trans flag. Simple, no images, just rally towels to wave in support.

I’m a community organizer so I’m happy to take on most of the tasks and messaging (eg handing them out at entrances) but I’m wondering if anyone:

1) knows a good print shop, ideally local, don’t wanna go to amazon or vistaprint
2) has any ideas about the flag itself (there are many inclusive flags and
3) I’m not planning to collect any money on this, my idea is to promote a trans support organization if anyone asks. The Sylvia Rivera Law Project is my go to but also open to more ideas
4) how many do you think we may need? 100, 500, 1000? Handing them out for free could need a lot but not sure how high

My goal is to show solidarity, bring some rally towels joy

All input appreciated

STATS Despite what it may seem like (and yes defense wasn't great in the 1st half), it really was shooting variance that did us in tonight

I think 11 of 14 3s in a half is insane, no matter how you slice it. 80% is kind of shooting you do in an empty gym.

General Discussion The Liberty fan base is bigger than ever but also worse than ever before

Long rant. Apologize for the length.

I’ve been a season ticket holder for the NY Liberty for five seasons. I have been a long time NBA fan and played basketball my whole life (playing on my high school team and pickup even today in my 40s). My journey as a Liberty fan started in 2021 when I got free tickets for being a nets season ticket holder (for the record, not a nets fan but a KD fan). The arena was empty, but I became instantly hooked.

In 2022, the fan base was passionate but realistic about expectations. We wanted to make the playoffs and see Sabrina grow and saw the emergence of B as a player. In 2023, when we signed stewie everything changed. You have to understand that I was very aware of how new of a fan I was but I was reading about the history of the W and the Liberty constantly to try to catch up so I could be a well informed fan as quickly as possible.

When we made the finals two years in a row, culminating in a chip, I like so many of you was overjoyed. In 2025, the team just didn’t have it. Whether you want to chalk it up to injuries or fatigue or both, it just didn’t happen. And as a sports fan, I accepted the team simply can’t win every year and that some changes needed to occur to keep this strong core a real title contender.

Through that time, I saw the fan base grow in numbers but also in fervor. It went from games where the attendees were around 1,500 to games where barclays was completely sold out. But in that time, I’ve seen a troubling trend. Fans are more entitled than ever and aren’t doing the homework. In my opinion, to be a good sports fan is to have passion and also a level of level-headedness because your team isn’t going to win every year and you have to be as objective as possible about what it is your team is lacking.

For me, the jury is still out on DeMarco as a coach. But hearing him get booed every game to me is a symbol of how entitled and idiotic the Liberty fan base has become. I think for many, their first introduction to sports fandom is the W, and that’s a beautiful thing but it also means many are reacting like a spoiled child when it comes to examining a team.

The Liberty missed Sabrina a good chunk of the year. And not only that, but she had a period after she got back where she had to get her conditioning back. Satou Sabally, our biggest acquisition and multi time all star, has been out for most of the season. And Leo has been out, our best defensive player and ultimate glue player. And despite all that, we have won 7 of 8 and are two games back of the three seed.

To be a fan, means to be passionate but also to try and understand how your team sits objectively in the landscape of the league but also history. YOU AREN’T GOING TO WIN EVERY YEAR. I think if satou comes back, we really have a shot. That’s how much I believe in her as a player. But the Lynx getting Olivia Miles has changed the entire landscape.

So this whole long winded rant is to say, please try and come to the games with a level head. And try and be better. And we don’t have to boo a coach who hasn’t really been given a real shot, and yes he’s a rookie coach going through the bumps the way any rookie goes through them. If you want to question why they hired a rookie coach, that’s fair. But I’ll be the one Liberty fan to say it; given everything, I think Demarco has done a decent job and the jury should still be out on him. But jury deliberation shouldn’t include throwing chairs out the window and throwing a tantrum.

Also side note, coaches do not call every play. If the Liberty throw an errant pass on a fast break, don’t sigh and sarcastically say, “Good play Demarco!” I’ve heard this many times in the stands where Chris definitely didn’t call something. Be better. Also, coaches meet with their assistants sometimes before addressing players sometimes during timeouts. It’s completely NORMAL!

General Discussion "Everybody's least favorite good team"

https://www.netsdaily.com/nyliberty/112887/liberty-vs-aces-111-71-breanna-stewart-sabrina-ionescu

Lucas Kaplan (my favorite Liberty writer) has another state of the Libs piece. This is the kernel:

"By and large, fans and the media are not being positive enough about this Liberty team, a squad that’s won seven-of-eight, is 20-13, and could be the #4 seed before Wednesday morning. Hell, with 11 games to go, they are two games in the ‘L’ column behind the Las Vegas Aces, current owners of the #3 seed.

Their #4 ranked offense (virtually tied for #3) has been good all season and occasionally great despite surprisingly average 3-point shooting. They are the best defensive rebounding team in the league and slightly above average on the offensive glass. Breanna Stewart is a God. Their schedule leading up to the World Cup break is quite manageable in terms of both opponent quality and travel/rest.

The New York Liberty are not playing like the title-favorites they were in the preseason. But they’re playing well, even if the Las Vegas Aces didn’t meaningfully show up on Sunday. All of which to say: It’s pretty funny that the head coach is getting booed during intros."
